I've heard rumours that there may be complete series box sets of classic series Doctor Who serials being released.
Here's hoping it's true because it would save so much space, and it wouldn't be too hard to get rid of the DVDs on Ebay either.

I’d be ok with this, I could make a small fortune selling some of my region 1 dvds.

I wonder if they'll start from Season 7 or if there will be missing episode serials included.
Course they could also do one expensive box set per Doctor, regardless of completion (and two for Tom - Sarah & Leela for one, Romana & onward for the other)

The Best Buy listing that started the "rumour" - now taken down - was for Tom's first season. So it would seem they're going to test the water with the most popular/lowest risk of the classic Doctors.

I would assume that they'd start from the very first series, and explain in some new production notes that some of the stories are missing and therefore not included. I hope not. I'd much rather one box set per series.

We all know these would be a huge success - people have been crying out for this for ages.

Couple of fans on the internet calling for this does not guarantee financial success, BBC Worldwide will still want to test the waters. Season boxsets sounds good, though technically Season 16 is already available in one set as The Key to Time set.

Many will buy this and sell their classic series DVD to free up space.

Or, if you're in Germany, I believe all the Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy episodes have been released in season box sets

Why would you want 40 plus old material, a lot of it shot on video tape, released on blu-ray?

Why would you want 40 plus old material, a lot of it shot on video tape, released on blu-ray? Because you can fit it onto less discs if it’s bluray.

Personally I think less space on a shelf is far more important. I'd much rather have some more Special Editions of early DVDs like 'Horror of Fang Rock' and 'Pyramids of Mars'. Though No thanks. The classic series DVDs are nice but having one DVD case per story takes up too much space. I don't even have that many (about 22 I think) but even the few I have take up a ridiculous amount of space. Classic series Blu-ray box sets should have been released ages ago. I for one will be glad to sell my classic series DVDs if this happens.

You want shelf space? Store the episodes on hard drives. Moving up to a higher definition format is about your favorite things looking better, not worse. Yeah sure the episodes look like crap but look at all the extra room I have! Whatever.

A hard drive's not the same. Physical copies are much better in my view as you can actually see them on a shelf.

No, what matters is the content and how it looks. You have already established you don't care that the blu-rays will look worse than the DVDs, you just want more shelf space. So I'm just following through on what you've said to their logical conclusion. If the quality of the image is unimportant to you, then we are just talking ergonomics.

But when it's a DVD per serial you find that you start running out of space for things in no time. I doubt I'm alone in being willing to sacrifice picture quality for more shelf space.

Again, we circle back to I am completely mystified by that point of view. Get a bigger shelf. The work done by the Doctor Who Restoration Team is nothing short of amazing to get those DVDs out there looking as good as they did. I would imagine a full restoration to get they ready for high def release would probably be cost prohibitive.

I can see the advantage of having whole Doctor Who seasons on Blu-ray for space saving reasons, but the picture quality would be doing the Blu-ray format a disservice as you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, so the picture quality would be poor with picture imperfections magnified by the higher resolution. But of course, release them in a nice collectable steelbook and Doctor Who fans will buy them anyway.
