Got my set on Saturday and opened it yesterday. I’m a big fan of MasterChef, so I went straight to The Doctor Who Cookbook! What a lovely and fun feature; I wish it was longer and actually focused more on the making of the dishes, MasterChef style. I do like Toby Hadoke, but I think it could’ve been something really distinct and special without him helping out.
I loved the bonus recipes too!

I felt that The Doctor's Table was a bit of a car crash. There are a couple of lovely moments, especially in the last 10 minutes, but on the whole it's rather cringey. Out of the TARDIS works so well in DWM because the questions are broad and thought provoking, which provide a meaty response from the interviewee. This tries to be pacey, not helped by the very choppy editing, and is also very tenuously linked to Season 23, which holds it back. I love the concept on paper, but the execution isn't great. It should have leaned more to being like Out of the TARDIS, or The Collection's new The Writers Room format.
On the subject of The Writers Room, it continues to be a highlight of the range. It's informal, which helps to make it informative, and it's interesting to see them interact and reflect on their work. Eric Saward's cheeseboard looked brilliant, but Wally & Christopher's Ploughman's could have done with less pork pie and more cooked meat! It was nice to get a sneak peek of Big Finish's upcoming The Ultimate Evil adaptation too.
I'll make a start on the new edition of Vervoids a little later on, I think.

And more importantly have we had the purposed Season 23 Ep order wrong all these years?

I just received my season 23 box set this morning, one day earlier than expected. My god the amount of special features in this thing is proper impressive. I'm just sad I couldn't buy the season 12 set last year because I didn't expect it to be THAT limited. I may purchase the US version someday since apparently it is region free.

I enjoyed the In Conversation with Bonnie Langford. Perhaps not as in depth as the two done for Tom Baker and Peter Davison, it's nice to see the format extended to companions and we don’t hear enough from Bonnie.
Terror of the Vervoids Special Edition was interesting. I am fond of the story in its original format, but it’s nice to see it without the Trial inserts and it does work better. It’s obviously the only time we really spend with the Sixth Doctor and Mel on screen. I think that’s the main intention of the special edition really, as the CGI shots of Hyperion III are rough and look incredibly dated, and they don’t really seem to do anything else with the rest of the story. I think more could’ve been done with it to really make it shine. It seems more of a curious oddity than a polished piece. I did love the amended titles, though, that was really nice.

Just finishing up The Three Doctors. The restoration is a mixed bag, to be expected given the source material. Though close ups and other shots look fantastic. I can’t wait to check out behind the sofa after work! Having watched my first installment of behind the sofa, that was great. The Main three are a delight! The other team were fairly good, but it would be nice if Joy contributed a bit more. But hopefully that’s just a one off. I wish they could have gotten Terrence for it though And bring back Janet!

Yesterday, I received 2 copies of the Jon Pertwee region 1 sets that I pre-ordered from Amazon. Both of them did not have the cardboard sleeve that traditionally covers the factory sealed Amaray case of a brand new release. The other 3 Blu-ray releases (Davison and 2x Tom Baker) did come with cardboard sleeves.
Both of my copies have cracks on the plastic Amaray cases. So, I'm wondering did someone perhaps discard the cardboard sleeves in order to make it less obvious of the exterior damage to my sets. Either way, I will be sending them back for replacement copies.
Region 1 owners of the Jon Pertwee set, did your copies come with a cardboard sleeve?

Looking at some of the Amazon review comments it does appear that there isn't a slipcover for the Jon Pertwee set. The other complaint was that the initial pre-order price was too expensive for too long a period, which couldn't have been overly enticing for its early bird buyers. The price only went down to $50 a few days before release. Both Amazon Canada and US are at the moment out of stock of the Pertwee sets - "usually ships within 1 to 2 months". That long period estimation of being not available doesn't normally occur so abruptly for a newly released Doctor Who DVD in my region market. Thankfully the pre-order for the Colin Baker Blu-ray is currently priced at a reasonable $50.

Mine came without a sleeve and damaged as well. I’ll be looking into a replacement as well.

Mine came without a sleeve and damaged as well. I’ll be looking into a replacement as well. Thank you for your response and I'm sorry to hear about your copy also being damaged. I guess it's reasonable to conclude that the exclusion of the sleeve comes down to either a cost saving decision or a manufacturing blunder. It will be interesting to see if the forthcoming Colin Baker region 1 set comes with a slipcover.

I know the Davison one never did.

I hope that I don't have to wait "1 to 2 months" for a replacement copy. SP will know the answer to your inquiry.

I checked Gallifrey Base and yeah - no contents page this time either, and no individual artwork for each disc. No-one there had a slipcover either so looks like they're gone. Pretty much as stripped down as they can be now. A contents page is surely needed though, or you just end up putting random discs in to find what feature is where....

The Blessed On Doctor Who feature on the Mindwarp disc is really something. We're used to even most of the actors who starred in the show only half-remembering things about their era but Brian Blessed seems like he's been a legit fan since the start. It would be easy for anyone to just say that (usually with a llazy reference to kids hiding behind sofas) but Brian (according to Richard Molesworth, pretty unprompted) goes through all the actors who played the part, talking about his thoughts on the incarnation in question, the performance and even name dropping Sutekh, Pyramids, Ice Warriors and others.
The Doctor's Table was a nice cosy watch. Michael Jayston being a bit deaf in his 70s leads to quite a few slightly misheard moments that cracks everyone up but his pronunciation of Pease Pottage is what really sets Colin off. A lot of fun.

The new title sequence and theme for the SE of Vervoids. Terrific. Can you tell I'm doing an extras binge today?

In the lost Season 23 feature, had to laugh at Philip Martin's quite brusque review of Hollows Of Time. Christopher HAMILTON Bidmead didn't take that too well. Also interesting to hear Eric say, as I've always thought, that Yellow Fever far from being a great lost Bob Holmes script as some still believe for no real reason was actually a JNT-led job for hire that neither Holmes nor Saward had any interest in and it could only really have been a mess. Nice to see the mockups of the lost stories accompanied by the BF audios, that was cool.

I kinda loved the cookbook feature though I think Toby worked great on it. He was the one linking it all back to the premise, encouraging a bit of banter and paying some lovely tributes to Hartnell and Hurndall. It was quite poignant when he and Frazer decided that Pat Troughton's simple soup recipe was indeed something a war veteran who was a provider during the war and afterwards in the era of rationing would come up with. I wasn't expecting the cookbook feature to be poignant! Toby's got a long history in the extras of being into the obscure, oddball miscellany of Who so I woudn't be surprised if without him we wouldn't get that piece. The big question...why did 3/4 of the recipes in the book that we saw have something like oysters, capers, kippers or (more than once) anchovies? They all love their seafood in that book! I can't believe that Sarah Sutton got away with just doing "lasagne" - no puns, no odd ingredients and....NO SEAFOOD! Get some anchovies in that lasagne, Nyssa!
