I posted last year that, as per the Doctor Who Yearbook, there was a decision taken that they would not be waiting till the end of, or closer to the end of, this line to do the black and white era. Here's an article summing all that up (with a nice Hartnell Season 1 mock up) Tantalisingly, though, it seems Chris Chapman might be referring to a black and white season next year! dwca.org.au/hartnell-and-troughton-Blu-ray-releases-confirmed/I think S20 in July or so, S17 in September then maybe S9 or S11 in December...that'd be my guesses so far but next year if we can get a Hartnell or Troughton on the shelf, that'd be magic.

There are a couple of options for B&W seasons next year. With Fury from the Deep already in the works, and two animations currently promised per year, next years' two stories could be The Abominable Snowmen and The Wheel in Space, completing Season 5 (with the exception of The Web of Fear 3 which could either be animated along with TAS or kept as the recon from the initial DVD release). Alternatively, they could do The Space Pirates next year, completing Season 6. (Damn, the fact we could hypothetically have a complete Troughton season by the end of next year is a ridiculous yet thrilling possibility! )

Thanks very much for sharing that Davy, a fascinating read. So many hints of the possible and the maybe! Whatever they can do we know by now will be the best content possible within practical limits, can't wait!
If I were a betting man I'd guess 20, 17 and 9 this year.
(20 & 17 chosen with the head, going by what we've heard. 9 is with the heart because I hope that we'll get something very special - and time-consuming to produce - for 'Invasion of the Dinosaurs' so we'll have to wait for 11. Probably it will only happen in my dreams, but I'd love a CGI T-Rex and all the rest of them. Then I could finally tell people what a brilliant story that is without having to add that pesky 'except for...' Oh and S9 would be a brilliant choice also because I'd love 'Day of the Daleks', 'The Curse of Peladon' and 'The Sea Devils' for Christmas viewing!)

I'd like to think we'll get another Pertwee season sooner rather than later, but if we do I hope they have a new feature explaining exactly how they produced most of the stories. For example, I know that there are a large number of episodes that we only have the NTSC versions of the colour for so they've been re-transferred back to PAL via Reverse Standards Conversion (RSC). Does the Chroma Dot colour recovery process produce better results? Do the B&W prints of those episodes have chroma dots ( The Mind of Evil 1 didn't)? Would the optimal version of a story combine the colour signals from both to produce a better final image? I'm fascinated by all the different methods and techniques they've developed over the years to restore this material and I'd love to know every detail about these "final versions" of the stories (as the probability there'll ever be a better versions than these is unlikely).

(Damn, the fact we could hypothetically have a complete Troughton season by the end of next year is a ridiculous yet thrilling possibility! ) It's certainly amazing we're so close and that the Troughton shelves are so full. I remember my Troughton videos and it was a pretty paltry lot. To have so many now is just a dream. The official word from Charles Norton, though, is that it just isn't feasible for everything to be animated either for reasons of time before the bluray seasons come out, or in practicality due to sets, costumes, locations etc needing animated that would mean so much more work. He's always cited The Highlanders and Marco Polo as prime examples - so many sets, millions of elaborate and changing costumes (all that tartan!) and so many speaking roles. Wheras the ones they've done tend to have simple set backdrops, smaller casts and less elaborate character designs. He's also said they are aware some stories will be more popular than others and they know what people want most - you've got to imagine Evil Of The Daleks will be one for next year! Though I won't get my hopes up too soon for a pretty unpopular story like Space Pirates, one of the consistently lowest rated stories every time DWM do their fan polls. Russell Minton said the bluray sets don't have the budget to do their own animations so the standalone releases need to be made independently for future inclusion in the sets. Would Space Pirates sell on it's own in sufficent numbers to make it worthwhile? I think Marco and Highlanders would sell well but the costs of production would be so much higher apparently that the current price points wouldn't cover it...and the market won't all pay a premium to support these. I mean, we would I'm sure. I'd pay more for these if it was the only option, absolutely, but the on the fence buyers may not and they're the ones who killed the animation line in the DVD era by not supporting it enough when Dan Hall was trying to get as much animated as possible. I mean for a "complete" Dalek's Master Plan I'd pay £50 happily as that would need a POWER of work being so epic. Would enough buyers also want to pay more to get these? I'd love to think so...but realistically I don't imagine they would. As the article notes, Charles says things are unlikely but nothing is impossible. I'll hope for the best and be prepared for the worst, which will still be good quality recons with the best audio the episodes have ever had. Charles has already said these releases really do have tight margins, so supporting them is so important. Coughing up the extra tenner for the steelbook doesn't just get you the much better artwork but gives them even more revenue to keep these going. Imagine the heartbreak if these dried up again, as they did in 2012ish....we can't let the animations fail again!

I totally see your point on The Space Pirates, but then The Faceless Ones is hardly one of the mostly highly regarded stories either (though I have quite a soft spot for it). I was amazed they announced it before doing The Evil of the Daleks. As for high quality recons, if they're in the same vein as The Web of Fear 3 (or the sections of The Macra Terror ones I saw on the DVD) then I won't have a problem with that. I'll be interested to see if the BBC can be bother with The Underwater Menace next time though

(They could fix the rubber door too ) But there seems to be one newly CGIed story per volume and I bet the Daleks get the first-class treatment! Even though 'Revelation' already has good effects. I expect we will get CGI spiders in S11 for similar reasons, these big-name villains hogging the limelight eh?
Agree these will be the definitive versions and I also would like a doc on the restoration techniques very much; if they were going to do one then at a guess S8 would be the place to put it. From memory of the DVD extras they used several different techniques for different stories in that one season. There's an 'Easter Egg' on 'Claws of Axos' but I think that was talking about the first restoration of eps 2 & 3 and I've got the SE which used a different method. Then 'Mind of Evil' with ep1 having to be approached differently again, as you mention, and 'The Daemons' was also redone.
We've come a long way since 1993 and the recoloured 'Daemons', that was so exciting to see (as I've mentioned before ep 5 in 1971 was my first ever colour TV viewing so it was extra-special to see it again!) S7 and S8 are two that I'm really anticipating, as you can guess!

(I did make a joke about 'meeting a Python' recently didn't I? OK it was about Time War 4 'Palindrome' and just a joke but if I can work out how to make it seem prescient in hindsight, I will!)

I'll be interested to see if the BBC can be bother with The Underwater Menace next time though Oh, I think Faceless has always been regarded much higher regarded than Space Pirates though you're right it's still middle of the road rather than top tier in fandom. In the 2014 "50 Years Poll" in Doctor Who Magazine, Faceless was voted by fans 142 out of 241 stories. Though that's higher than Macra Terror which we've already got animated (150/241). Space Pirates though? The lowest ranked b&w story of all at a rather rank 235/241. It's just...plodding and the TARDIS crew aren't in enough of it, I think, that it really suffers. Steve Roberts spoke about the poor quality record for Underwater Menace at the time of the DVD and said that he and some of the RT (as was) were willing to work on it more but the Beeb wouldn't cough up more and put the deadline back again. I'd be hopeful if we do see that as a recon we get the better version! I think Evil is 100% coming but they, like Dan Hall's strategy with the DVDs, don't want to front end the releases with the most popular ones then have the "dregs" at the end selling lower and lower which is exactly what happened to the VHS range which went out with a real whimper. Isn't it amazing though we can even have these conversations? That "Is it feasible that we can watch every Who episode" is a question that can be realistically asked? Amazing times. I honestly hope Charles, Russell and the teams know how much these releases are really making our years! I'll never forget watching the new Shada on bluray 2 Christmas Eves back and when THAT scene happened and the modern Tom popped up from the console...it really was Christmas. It's such an amazing time to be a fan of classic Who. We're getting the most deluxe of the deluxe.

Yeah, Season 8's restoration is a right old pick'n'mix. (If I remember correctly) Terror of the Autons and The Daemons used off-air US recordings that were matched up to the B&W film prints for greater clarity (both may also have been blended with chroma dot recovery, but I'm not sure), The Mind of Evil was hand colourised for Episode One and chroma dotted for Episodes Two-Six, The Claws of Axos used RSC and (I think) blended with chroma dot on the Special Edition, and Colony in Space was just RSC. To add to the list of restorative procedures, the B&W prints were film duplicates and had to be VidFired to restore the videotape look on the studio sections. Doctor Who restoration is basically magic. "No, it's science, Miss Hawthorne."

In fact, remember when this range of season sets started it was "Remember, we're reliant on sales - if this Tom Season 12 doesn't sell...we may not see more". Now it's "How long till it sells out? 2 weeks, 3? Maybe even a whole month?"

You've got a fair point about not doing all the 'best' ones first. I suppose that means we can pretty much guarantee one of the best will be saved until last, even if it's only because Marco Polo is too expensive to do sooner I'm just too young to have seen the VHS years. My memory starts with new releases like The Leisure Hive or The Aztecs DVDs on store shelves. We used to borrow the tapes from the library, but that's about the extent of my VHS knowledge. Yeah, I remember reading all about Underwater Menace at the time. I've genuinely only watched the DVD versions once, and that was only because I felt obligated to since I'd bought the thing. I've only ever watched it with the Loose Cannon version since. You're right, this is a great time to be a Classic Who fan! HD season re-releases, a promise of two animated stories per year, re-releases of the missing episode soundtracks, the almost complete collection available for streaming on BritBox... You couldn't really ask for more

It's certainly amazing we're so close and that the Troughton shelves are so full. My view on it is that everything said now reflects the current level of animation technology and the costs/potential revenues associated with it.
With the passage of time and the advance of technology the costs will only get cheaper and cheaper and the quality will only get better and better. I have no doubt that in 10 or 20 years' time a 14 year old nerd working alone in his bedroom will be able to produce a much better quality animation of the lost stories than we are currently getting from Charles Norton and his team. OK, I exaggerate ... but you get the point (and no disrespect is intended towards the current animators)
I have no doubt that in true BBC style Dr Who fans will sooner or later be asked to cough up for much better quality re-animations of stories like Power, Macra, etc produced for a fraction of the current cost. And at that point animating all the stories - Marco Polo, Highlanders, etc - will be commercially feasible.
And then at some point beyond that again we will get photo-realistic animation that looks just like the original episodes and that same nerd (or his grandchildren) will be animating BF stories long after everyone involved in making them is dead.
It's only a question of when, not if.

I'll hope for the best and be prepared for the worst, which will still be good quality recons with the best audio the episodes have ever had. I wasn't expecting that every story would be animated by the time the season sets are finally released, I was just being hopeful that it is in fact possible that would *could* have *a* complete season. I've not seen the likes of The Abominable Snowmen or The Wheel in Space having been ruled out animation-wise, and given there is actually something marketable about them (Great Intelligence and Cybermen respectively) I don't think it's utterly impossible we might get them done before a Season 5 collection. I'll be interested to see if the BBC can be bother with The Underwater Menace next time though Now that we have got used to animations, the high quality recons just feel like second best, or the poor man's version. I'd much rather they slowed the rate of blu ray release to give them time to animate everything.
Let's face it, if a B/W season has recons rather than animation, it will NEVER feel like the definitive version because we all know that animation will eventually happen sooner or later. And then the BBC will ask us to put our hands in our pockets again.
