Made my way through The Deadly Assassin and The Robots of Death over the past few days. Both stories are classics, aren’t they? Tom is magnificent in them and they’re both unique in their own ways. The sound and picture quality is excellent, particularly the outdoor scenes in The Deadly Assassin.
I’m always surprised when I hear the crew criticise the script of The Robots of Death. I think it’s pretty good, but I agree that it’s the production side which release elevates it. The close work carried out by the set, model and costume team really works in its favour to create a distinct look that helps to distinguish the story and make it iconic.

I think The Talons of Weng-Chiang is the real highlight of the set. Beautiful restoration and the colour really pops. The updated effects are subtle and respectful too; the giant rat is dimly lit and the less static movement sells it.

So I have been conversing with the biggest Australian retailer "JB HiFi" about these classic blu ray releases. As I am a member and buy a lot of physical product from them on an almost weekly basis they have pre- pre ordered Season 14 4th Doctor for me (It's not officially up on the website yet but is 100% officially scheduled for 15th July release).
They confirmed with me they are, as a business, disappointed with the low manufacturing volumes of these boxsets given it appears the BBC are wanting to delete the current single story dvd sets (?). From a business perspective it doesn't make much sense keeping it limited edition, when you are guaranteed to sell more simply by having more.
They constantly get requests for the previous sets but they cannot get them- they are aware of the ridiculous prices on Amazon/eBay etc.

Interesting that they've got an image of the whole set too. Usually it's just the cover. Also, comparing this to Amazon, they're charging $10 more... It's $10 more to actually be able to pick the thing up at the start of the release week though, so I think I can live with that

I just added another order for my brother. 2 copies in the mail next month

Just watched Robots of Death. Never realised before that Dask is so Avon-like in the early episodes.

When is the next release going to be announced? I suppose it depends on how complete a potential next set is. I get the impression some stuff is banked ahead of time, but some is done just before the set is announced. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more of a delay this time round. I can’t wait, though; I’ve got £40 Quidco cashback with The Collection’s name on it!

Now to do the same for Season 12 and 18 .. and 19 And 10! 😬 Just amazes me, Roadshow have lost the distrubtion for all the classic era here in Australia. You literally cannot buy any classic era anymore.. And they persist with the "limited edition" of these new re-releases.. I have had official confirmation in writing from the largest retail store in Australia that even they are "dissapointed" in the BBC's decision regarding quantity.

Now to do the same for Season 12 and 18 .. and 19 And 10! 😬 I think they'll do more of this sort of thing. Cautious number of releases so they don't have a warehouse full of unsold stock which could put the future of the range in jeapordy & then second pressings later.

Yes, I think this is in response to orders being cancelled and it selling out before release, so customers had no alternative. I don’t think it’ll happen regularly, and I can’t see it happening for any more of the already released sets, but you never know.

That has probably worked well for the BBC so far … but they could get caught out with some the less well thought of seasons.
Re season 14, who knows what goes on behind the scenes? For all we know, there may have been fewer season 14 pressed than originally planned due to covid-19 lockdown affecting the DVD manufacturing facilities and this is just the BBC making up for it
