I love these extended promos. Having a mini adventure like this latest one gets me hyped so much for the set. It doesn't hurt that this is one of my favorite eras of classic Who.

It’s the new features that’s really selling this one for me. The clips of the actual stories rattle through too quickly for me to have a strong opinion on the restoration work, though I’m sure it’s excellent and it’s a fantastic season.
Frank Skinner leading a Terrance Dicks documentary is a real coup, I can’t wait for that one, A Devil’s Weekend will be bonkers and all the better for it and The Direct Route will be lots of fun. The highlight is always these In Conversation pieces and I’m doubly excited as I adore Katy Manning.

Oh yes one more thing - great lineup on the sofas! It looks like it should be renamed Behind the Plastic Screen Strange times... but however weird/virtual the sofas have to be, it's still a great lineup!
I was 50/50 on the BTS features for S10 (the 'classic UNIT' sofa team were great, of course!) so I'm pleased they've shaken things up for this next Pertwee set.

Dear BBC, When do we get the Jo Jones Adventures spin-off?
[The dodgy CSO in Terror is probably one of the worst effects in the whole show (and that's saying something) so I'm glad they're cleaning it up.]

I've not really looked at the behind the sofas yet, are they worth watching ? Yes, definitely. They vary from set to set of course depending on who's on the sofas, but I've enjoyed most of them. Lots of insights from those who were involved in the stories and I also enjoy it when cast members watch eras they weren't involved with, often seeing the shows we know so well for the first time. And depending on the team, there can be a lot of fun and some mock-waspish humour too!
Overall, so far I think my favourite BTS runs are those for S18 and S19 but I think they're all good and entertaining to watch.

This is probably a longshot, but is there anyone here from the UK who would be willing to order an extra copy of Season 8 and then ship it to me in the US? Amazon has stopped shipping some Blurays overseas, it seems. I can pay upfront, plus postage, and a handling/courtesy fee for the sender. Send me a PM if you don't mind helping me out!

Some excellent detail from Blu-Ray restorer Peter Crocker via his Twitter feed @crockmansnappy - I have copied some his replies to other peoples queries from a few threads. In summary: Terror & Colony - completely new restorations from scratch. Axos & Daemons - upscales based on DVD masters but with significant & innumerable tweaks/fixes Mind - re-restoration based on upscale of DVD mid-workflow files to improve detail/grading. Audio v. much better. Q: Can you tell us whether you used colour recovery for Autons and Dæmons? A: We looked at the CR output for Terror but there was little difference (part better, part worse) and would have involved massively more work. Daemons CR was not viable - it's often poor on largely dark pictures. Q: Hi Peter, could you tell me if you have re-attempted the colourisation of Mind of Evil Pt 1 for this set or is it the same as the dvd? A: No, but I the BD better represents the work than the DVD. Budgets are not endless and in these sets we have to be strategic in directing the resources where we'll see the biggest difference - which in this case means "Terror" and "Colony". All are significantly improved though. Q: Thanks Peter. It’s great that Terror is improved! How did you get a better picture quality? Some new techniques or just a fresh transfer? A: @richardtrussell cleverly modified his CR/undistortion algorithm to output in HD which preserves some extra detail. The BD geometry is correct, whereas the DVD was warped. And we now have much better tools for fixing film edit bounces and that nasty offlock in ep 3. (@richardtrussell replies) Not really clever: the Colour Recovery process works internally in HD resolution and only downconverts to SD at the very last step, so all I had to do was to modify that step to do filtering but not downconversion.
It's clear from the film recordings that even if we had the Tx tapes "Colony" would look comparatively rough and need lots of TLC. It looks acceptable now I think. Q: Did you restore Colony from the film recordings this time? A: Yes. They introduced their own, not insignificant, problems but we got there in the end. I see also that it is slated for release February 23rd 2021 (via twitter.com/TheCyberdevil) From archivist Richard Bignell @nothinglane: There will be a total of 2615 pages worth of PDF archive in the Season 8 Blu-ray Collection - Production files, scripts (including the draft storyline and scripts for The Pandora Machine), Radio Times, 1971 Annual, Sugar Smacks & Nestles promotions etc.

Hello again.
Season 8! The Master Season. I watched the whole season earlier in the year in a free Britbox month. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Jon Pertwee consolidates the excellent start he made in his first season. His scenes with the sublime Roger Delgado are wonderful. Jo Grant is a complete change from Liz Shaw. Jo is a delight, she has a charm and a determination not to be left out when something needs to be done. Her best story for me is Mind of Evil. Claws of Axos is a hilarious, it's a psychedelic alien invasion story with an interesting twist.
The Daemons is an atmospheric finale, once again, the Master has no idea what a powerful being he is working with. All in all, its a thoroughly enjoyable season. Enjoy it when it arrives in this new format, with all these super extras. Best wishes.

This is like one of those spot the difference puzzles that used to fill a double page in the old 70's Annuals or activity books. Is it another, later photograph of the same lab, or a CGI composite, ii wonder?

I think that’s very tastefully done. Not only showing the updated effect, but also the sheer increase in picture quality too.
I felt the trailer sold the new features much better than the actual stories, so it’s nice to see screenshots and comparisons like this.

Is it another, later photograph of the same lab, or a CGI composite, ii wonder? I feel like it has to be CGI, with the blurring doing a great job of hiding that - the CGI often stands out when slapped on an older piece of footage so it's nice to see something where we go "is this CG?". The remastered Planet of the Daleks comes to mind, as well as countless Star Trek TOS episodes! Someone in the replies also points out that the coffins behind the Autons are a nod to the Target illustration of the same scene, which is super cool.

I get the impression that the Computer banks is a photo of a model of the same configuration, but a different colour - maybe a museum shot? The room itself seems to be as you say, a CGI to fit that of the original (the pillar and ceiling lights being the indicators). Whatever the case, the fat that you need to study a still frame to establish this speaks volumes of the effort and effectiveness. Looking forward to seeing more.. As you say, the CGI for the Star Trek TOS remasters worked very well in blending in unobtrusively in place of the original, grainy film inserts. The fact that one needs to make a like for like comparison to know that it is new and not merely restored footage of the above, is a measure of its success. I no longer have the 'originals' of the ST TOS, but have not missed them as the new CGI works very well to me - it does not try to modernise and stays 'of its time' in a way.

Seems a pity that Richard Franklin is still absent from things. It would appear he has been unwell.

One for fans of Planet of the Daleks as seen on the Season 10 Blu-Ray Collection. An excellent series of behind the scenes photos from the filming of that story, from twitter.com/DrWhoCastCrew
