Just received also in my PO BOX today 3rd Doctor Series 8 blu ray boxset.. The official Aussie release date is tomorrow 26th. Works for me..! Went and picked up my copy instore yesterday and I've already watched everything on the Terror of the Autons and The Mind of Evil discs. After a bit of uni work this arvo, I plan to start on The Claws of Axos tonight! (I normally do these a disc a day, but as it's been just over a year since we got the last set I'm a bit impatient this time...) ________ Just as a general comment on the set itself, it's clear that the colour recovery episodes are still "colour recovered", but Terror and Mind are a huge step up from the DVD counterparts. I did some rough comparisons last night and it's only gone to show that even if you've got these on DVD, the graphical/restoration upgrades on the Blu-rays are more than worth the reinvestment! I'd heard some complaints about colour bleed in some of the episodes in this set, but that they're largely only noticeable on big TVs. That's definitely not true, as I've got a reasonably small TV and even I can tell some of the colours don't line up all the time (it was particularly apparent during some of the daffodil hand-out scenes in Terror - the bright yellows of the Autons were pretty hard to miss being misaligned). Like I say though, the overall quality of the restoration is vastly superior to the DVDs, so the flaws that remain are more than acceptable

It's hard to be too critical on the set, given that the upgrades compared to the DVD are substantial (and the DVDs at the time were groundbreaking compared to what we had before!), but there are some issues that are noticeable. Not enough to discredit the work or to distract your viewing, but Season 8 was a very ambitious season to tackle at this relatively early stage in the range. I'd have probably gone for Season 9 first and left 8 until towards the end where the technology might have improved further, or at least they've worked on more stories and left the bulk towards the end.
The technology will always improve to some degree. I just think it's about what will affect the most stories, which is why I'd have left 8 a bit later.
Still, brilliant season and the work done is industry leading. We are very fortunate.

I'm just a bit picky about this sort of stuff For that reason, I'm glad they haven't gone ahead with Season 9 yet. As I understand it, the film insert for the fight sequence at the end of the third episode of The Curse of Peladon is known to exist in a private collection, but when they scanned it for the DVD release back in the day they only made an SD scan. They want to use the original source for an HD scan for the Season 9 set, but the person who owned the sequence has since sold it on and they were still trying to track it down again (I believe I read somewhere that they have actually located it, but don't quote me on that). I definitely get the argument about putting Season 8 off until later, but if it was this or having to wait even longer for a new release in this range, I'm glad to have this And the results are really, really good!

Oh no, not at all! Your post reminded me I'd not posted my own thoughts on the set and the picture quality, rather than a direct response to you. I didn't mean to discredit the work of the team at all, it's industry leading. My preference would be to leave the more "problematic" (as in they need more work done to the stories) seasons for later on in the run, just on the chance that technology evolves and two or three years difference can produce better results. Of course, there's so many variables in the running order of these sets and often the stories themselves don't take precedent in these things. Not necessarily a bad thing.

I’m surprised they’ve got another two out so quickly, as that puts them at halfway to catching up with the limited edition sets. I’d have thought they’d want to give more breathing space between releases. Mind you, announcing these just before Season 12 & 19 are released on Monday might give the encouragement that they do plan to get everything out in both editions, and it’s a longer period before Season 23 & 26.
Assuming they’re all using the same size amaray case the standard edition range is already more consistent than its limited edition counterpart!

The new effects on the regeneration scene looked great so looking forward to seeing it. Bit surprised that we're getting another two standard sets out so soon after S12 & 19 - they'll be caught up with the limited editions soon!

Good thread by Matthew Purchase with some strong contenders for most wanted in the relies: Which film inserts would you like to see most?

I've just received my “sensible edition” sets of season 12 and 19 today, and I'm very happy.
I knew they'd be less bulky than Limited Editions, but I was surprised that they were slim enough to comfortably come through the letterbox! They're each a little thinner than two standard DVD/Blu cases.
If you like the fancy LE packaging, good for you. It takes all sorts, etc. 🙂
For me, I definitely prefer these more practical versions.

The smaller ones are the only ones released here in Region A (as far as I know) and I'm quite happy with that. I spent many years with an entire shelf filled with Stargate SG-1 DVD box sets and I'm in no hurry to return to things that take up a ton of space!

It's a weird one for me, I think if I'd been told from the beginning these standard releases would be happening I probably would've waited (in fact I think back in this thread before season 12 was released I was wondering if /hoping there would be standard editions down the line) but now I'm glad I have the limited edition sets, although they're more delicate so I'm constantly paranoid that I'll damage them, or that they'll arrive damaged and I won't be able to get a replacement (my season 19 set arrived damaged but thankfully back then they didn't sell out before release so I got a replacement) but anyway it's great these have been released for people who missed out or for future fans to be able to pick them up

I check the main Aussie retailer site online every few days.. Still no release date or acknowledgement for these, and these are my top I need as I completely missed all knowledge of them being released here !

I'm mildly disappointed that known remastering errors which weren't addressed with disc replacements for the LEs are also unchanged on these new editions. Specifically, the two errors in The Visitation are still exactly as in the description on millenniumeffect.co.uk and W. Anklin's YouTube video. I was sort of hoping they might be fixed for these reissues, even though I don't think anyone had said they would be. At least the error in the booklet has been corrected, which makes sense. They were already preparing a new (shorter) version of the booklet for this set, whereas I presume creating a new master for the disc(s) was beyond the budget for this lower-cost reissue.

Having finished all of the stories in Season 8 now, I think the colour quality definitely dips on Axos 2 & 3 and all of Colony. Would that be why those episodes are also included in their standard definition versions? (I was a bit confused why they'd include the DVD versions before watching the HD episodes, though I'm even more confused as to why they'd include the 2005 DVD versions of the Axos episodes and not their Special Edition versions). The Daemons also feels a little lower quality than Terror of the Autons and The Mind of Evil, but it's also lightyears ahead of the DVD release so I don't mind that much! On the whole though, even with the lesser results of Axos 2 & 3 and Colony, the set is a massive improvement over the DVD restorations. Axos 1 and 4 and Daemons 4 look absolutely gorgeous (the advantages of having original PAL copies!). I'm still working my way through the all the extras, but I've quite enjoyed The Direct Route and A Devils Weekend (I'm not ashamed to admit I even teared up during the barrow section of the latter). I'm looking forward to hopefully diving into the final disc some time later this week
