Hmm, the article seems to be talking about "CBS Anal Access" more than the show - and for something to air in 14 months, a complete lack of any details about the setting and time period and casting...
I liked how the font in the banner image for "NEW SERIES JANUARY 2017" looks more like Babylon 5 than it does Trek.

I liked how the font in the banner image for "NEW SERIES JANUARY 2017" looks more like Babylon 5 than it does Trek. The article is from Trek.com and CBS - if it were a gossip site I'd see your point but shows turn around a lot faster than movies, especially these days. They'd be kinda silly to give away details like casting and setting just now. Why have one announcement when you can release gradually and get much more in the way of PR?

I'm not expecting that kind of detail, of course.
But they said pretty much nothing:
The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.
That's... nothing other than "It's coming".
But then at the end:
The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.
That's about the only interesting factoid. Does this mean another reboot?
Or does this mean that the "pilot" Renegades got picked up?

That's... nothing other than "It's coming". Kinda the point of the story, then! Isn't "We're making a whole new Star Trek series" enough to justify a newspiece? I'm expecting a new concept for a series - no remakes, no follow-ons, no prime universe, no Worf-spinoff, no Renegades, no Kirk.

I can't wait. It's about time that the crappy These are the Voyages isn't the most recent episode. I wonder what timeline this will be set in. I hope its the prime timeline, but I wouldn't mind the Abrams timeline. Or the mirror universe. I guess this probably means no Worf spin-off though.

Coolio! It shall interesting to see Star Trek produced in the current TV landscape, shaped as it's been by the likes of New Who.
Speaking of which, this has the potential to be a serious competitor to Doctor Who, no? This could be interesting.

Personally I've never seen Who and Trek as competitors, quite apart from anything else I really don't think the TV market for good sci-fi is anywhere near saturated, but also Who and Star Trek have such a different feel about them to me they are really quite different.
I've always liked Trek, but never regarded myself as a fan of it, for me Star Trek has often taken itself too seriously. Having said all that, my hope is that the series follows the original continuity and has nothing to do with the latest film continuity.

I just hope they don't cancel it. All the Star Trek spin-offs have been pretty weak for the first year or two (epsecially TNG) and it would be a shame if the new show never got a chance to be good.

TNG started off weak, it's true, but it got pretty good later on.

I don't see it being any competition for Who. The streaming model means it won't live or die on US ratings but on subscribers signing up so it won't suffer - as Enterprise did - from poor Network scheduling. It COULD struggle,as Community and Arrested Development have on streaming, from the platform owners failing to advertise enough but I think with Trek being such a huge franchise that shouldn't be an issue.
Internationally there's no CBS streaming so it will be interesting to see what happens. There is a CBS channel in the high numbers somewhere but not one thats designed for big shows, just repeats mostly so this may get sold to Sky or the like to boost exposure in the UK at least.
If nothing else...we're getting new Trek. I think that's something all old-school fans should be optimistic over.

I think Paramount owning the films and CBS the shows is why they've said this new series is not related to the Abrams one. Whether it's said it will be Trek Prime or they'll just leave it ambigous (we'll know when we spy a Klingon, if they're blue eyes and silly looking !) only time will tell.

It's funny...TNG and DS9 got better with new uniforms! Is that what did it? I should have realized. That's my oddball theory. And because Voyager was on the other side of the Galaxy - unable to get to the nearest Federation Surplus store - they were stuck in the old uniforms and that's why it never got to be as good as TNG and DS9 Well...that and some terrible actors! Even TOS's movies changed the Uniforms up a few times though I suspect that's mainly because there comes a point Shatner and Doohan couldn't pull off the skin-tight outfits Remember the weird Buck Rodgers/Battlestar ones from The Motion Picture? They very soon dropped those for the gorgeous red ones from Wrath Of Khan!

lol, always like Voyager far more than I ever liked TNG and DS9 got too lost in own continuity for someone like me that watches the episodes out of order and only from time to time.

THat's what DS9 was all about. For those that wanted standalone eps and actual "trekking", DS9 was never the only game in town since either TNG or Voyager were always in production at the same time. But for those of us that had had enough of one-and-dones and wanted something more involved, DS9 was great. Truly great. Especially with the Domion War. Longform storytelling at its best for sci-fi tv (along with the remade Battlestar)
