I think the last 10 mins of this ep are where we should have been by the end of EP 3, maybe even Ep 2. The story they're telling just didn't seem to, unless the next 4 eps are massively rushed, need 10 hours to tell it. I mean even this week we STILL got another scene with Treadaway and his sister where she expresses disappointment and says she's taking over then he says "NO, one more thing...". What is that? The fourth scene they've had doing exactly that?
Picard and Hugh's embrace was a lovely moment but even then only because we've got the context of their shared past not because the narrative has done anything to set up anything. We'll get the same chill when Riker and Troi give him a cuddle too. It was a great moment but a cheap nostalgia pop. It was great though to see the show have urgency for ten minutes. I mean they actually jogged to get away from the Romulans and had to use secret tech that's gonna take a frew seconds....it was - and this is the first time in 7 hours - exciting for a little bit.
This probably was the best ep yet but I can't stress enough how much that's damning with faint praise. I've also got zero idea why the other characters need to stay on. Surely their purpose for the story was getting Picard to Mystery Box. Mission Accomplished. I've got zero interest in what Raffi Exposition and Captain Generic Han Solo type get up to now. I've no idea - even remotely - how this show gets 10 eps out of it's premise much less the second season we know is coming and the third that is apparently ready to be announced. This story doesn't have legs and unless they just do Picard taking on a lost cause each year...what's the show? It's got a real identity issue.
I keep waiting on the course correct and I'm hoping this ep was something towards that though the trailer for next week is...well...jury is out. I want to love a Picard show but I can't fathom how they thought populating it with the most generic space opera characters and plots was a good idea.
