BERNICE SUMMERFIELD » BERNICE SUMMERFIELD - BOX SETS » 01. EPOCHReleased September 20111. THE KRAKEN’S LAMENTWritten by MARK WRIGHT “Gather round, wretched peoples of Atlantis, for Acanthus the Talesmith has a story to tell! A story of adventure, of courage, of a Winged Goddess searching for truth and sanctuary in a friendless city…On the streets of this fair city, the Goddess searches for a path to the child of two worlds, but finds instead only questions and danger. Be astonished as she defies the rage of the dreaded Kraken! Wonder as she sups with the tragic Queen in her carved stone palace, high above the city! Marvel at her bravery as she gazes deep into the Further Beyond! Come one, come all and listen! Listen to Acanthus the Talesmith and let him amaze you with his story… the story of Professor Bernice Summerfield and the Kraken’s Lament!” 2. THE TEMPLE OF QUESTIONSWritten by JACQUELINE RAYNER Life can be dangerous when a god’s got it in for you. Bernice and her Historian allies, Ruth and Leonidas, are trying to unearth the truth behind the mysterious world they’re living in. Poseidon, god of the seas, is apparently offering them answers – but only if they play his games. And he’s not playing fair… Bernice’s new family is in danger of being ripped apart by forces that are beyond their understanding. To keep her friends, she might have to lose the games... and her life with them. 3. PRIVATE ENEMY NO. 1Written by TONY LEE The Great Leader is dead… Long live the Great Leader! Atlantis is in disarray. The Historians are hiding Bernice, Leonidas and Ruth within their safe house – but the world is changing more than they could have ever imagined. People are being erased from existence, their memories wiped clean and replaced with those of others. Entire buildings are altering, times are changing… and the Hierophants are on the move. Can Bernice and her friends save Atlantis from the end of existence? Or will they too be assimilated? 4. JUDGEMENT DAYWritten by Scott Handcock Atlantis has fallen. The Epoch are in command. And terrible decisions lie in wait for Bernice Summerfield. Bernice and her comrades will be put to the ultimate test – facing Neanderthals on prehistoric Earth; alien creatures on the streets of Victorian London; and the Epoch in the far, far future – but which world will they choose to make their home? Their journeys have been long and arduous. But soon, they will all end. Because Bernice Summerfield dies today… and, when she does, reality will fall apart around her. The box set includes a bonus DVD featuring the recent Bernice Summerfield animated adventure Dead and Buried, together with all-new video documentaries produced exclusively for this release.Written By: Mark Wright, Jacqueline Rayner, Tony Lee, Scott Handcock Directed By: Gary Russell CASTLisa Bowerman (Bernice Summerfield), Ayesha Antoine (Ruth), Marcus Hutton (Leonidas), David Ames (Jack), Michael Thomson (The Epoch), Prentis Hancock (Craisus), Tracy Brabin (The Queen), John Stahl (Poseidon), John Montgomery (Acanthus), Graeme Henderson (Cordin), Chris Johnson (Darion), Rebecca Newman (Helena)

For the extras alone I'd recommend this. Plus the covers look gorgeous and it's a fantastic set of tales.

Epoch is one of my favourite Bernice Summerfield releases; the stories were of course very good and the extras - especially Dead and Buried - were great. I'm not sure it's as much of a jumping on point for the range as it was meant to be, but Benny was back on top form in this set after a few less inspiring stories in her monthly range.

Its a good jumping on point, but I Year Zero is a better one because that's a better introduction to Benny as a character. Epoch starts out with Benny on the back foot, trying to solve the mystery along with the listener.

Folks considering this should note that the download offer only gives you the 4 hour-long audio adventures. Not the video etc material included on the extra DVD in the physical CD/DVD box set. I've bought the £4.99 offer tonight for convenience (I already own the physical box, bought elsewhere), so can see what's in my online Big Finish account and what you can download.

Is that in the MP3 zip file? Because I'm not seeing anything specific.

You know how there are the buttons to download MP3 and Audiobook? Click on the tablet and phone icon next to that and you can see the contents of the zip file without having to download it. Here's the list for Love and War: DWNA001_loveandwar_1417.jpg Download to device Doctor Who - Love and War/1-01 Love and War.m4b Download to device Doctor Who - Love and War/2-01 Behind the Scenes.m4b Download to device Vortex-44.pdf Download to device This one has the cover, story, behind the scenes and the Vortex from October 2012. These lists don't include any subscriber extras where available because that is in the Bonus Content box with the release listing on the download page and those aren't downloaded the the main zip folder.

Haha yes I know that! But this is the first thing I've downloaded with visual content (which strictly speaking isn't either MP3 or audiobook).
Apologies for my confusion / misleading folks. *Yes* the video things are in the ZIP files that are downloaded if you download the MP3 or audiobook bundles from the customer account on the website. On my Mac when unzipped they show in a "video files" folder as MP4 files. And yes they play fine.
Huge apologies all!

I think my favoite was the one about Kim DotCom and how his wife married him for his body.

Listening to this box set on Spotify - I haven't listened to the Benny stuff that precedes it so I don't know much about the Year Zero arc and all that stuff, but this is an interesting jumping-on point!
I liked The Kraken's Lament a lot - the narration is a great touch and I thought Acanthus and Benny had a great relationship. Acanthus was just a real fun character in general - I loved the smash cut when he takes her to the Minotaur fight. The actual plot with the Kraken was a nice little number as well. Not too complex, but a nice twist and a bittersweet tragedy. The whole thing had me very invested in the arc very quickly.
The Temple of Questions I was less fond of. I like the concept, but ultimately there were some bits that just didn't work on audio near the end (the bit where Benny climbs a pillar and smashes something especially) and not very much actually happened in the second half. Sure, the setup was good and Ruth and Leonidas were well introduced, but the lack of real information from "Poseidon" was as frustrating to me as it was to the characters. And it's kind of odd to have a locked room with characters who don't know each other but then give those characters more development, reveals, etc. before they get in the room than when they're in it. Still, more positive than negative, it just didn't live up to the first story.

I've been doing a Benny boxset re-listen, and I really do love this set. I think it's very clever and a good way of reintroducing Benny to new listeners without her "family" around. I liked the addition of Ruth and Leo and was sorry to hear of Leo's fate.
