The updates thread is a central hub for any updates seen on or through Big Finish or through an offical Big Finish source, like news items, the podcast, conventions (that's where Leela in the War Doctor stories was announced, at a Big Finish Day).
The podcast is an offical promotional tool, recorded and put together by Big Finish employees using Big Finish material (the drama teases) and distributed on the Big Finish website. I don't see how it's any less valid than news items on the website or conventions like Big Finish Day or Chicago TARDIS.

For me the seperate thread should be not for stuff produced by BF, but tweets, articles etc from others who are involved in some way, but are not an official BF source.
The Podcast is an official source.

I don't see how that makes any difference, anyone can tag anyone, calling that official would be like saying because I tagged you in a post here mark687 it was official from you.

I would suggest that the Updates thread serves a special purpose, distinct from individual product threads, which becomes more obvious for older releases. For current information, the Updates thread is a catch-all posting place to which one can reliably turn for the latest information about all BF products on a single thread. No other means of finding the latest update posts can be so convenient, whether 'recent posts'*, 'recent threads' or any other, for update posts as distinct from chat, comments, etc. And the purpose of the Update thread and individual product threads diverges with time. If the Updates thread does not always have every useful update posted on it, it is not doing its 'job'. But if an update post is not duplicated to the specific product thread, then surely those threads are not doing their 'job' either? The Updates thread is like a physical bulletin board outside a library; a source of current information. If updates of relevant facts on every product are not routinely posted to the Updates thread, then surely it makes the Updates thread incomplete and perhaps even redundant? The Product threads (as well as being the proper place for discussion etc.) also serve as reference books in the DU library. If updates of relevant facts about each product are not posted to the specific product thread, then anyone who (as I have often done) visits an old product thread after enjoying that product and wants to find more information about it would not have all the posted facts available. The user would have to resort to a search - which does not allow for finding posts missing the chosen keyword, etc. and is likely to return many posts from 'purchases', 'arrivals', sales and similar threads which would not be relevant in that context. So I would argue that in this one specific case, 'duplicate' postings to two threads are in fact different in function and add to the usefulness of the forum. (*I don't like scanning 'recent posts' because that way one runs the risk of 'falling over' a spoiler-filled post which has (correctly) been posted without spoiler tags to a product thread after release, which thread would have the usual 'spoiler' warnings in its title. Even an accidental glance at a post can be reveal a spoiler!) And yes, this is a duplicated post, not to make any sort of point but simply because when I posted in the Podcast thread I hadn't discovered this one. Which does sort of make my point about the importance of the Updates thread, in a roundabout way.

I don't mind the current situation. Social media stuff in obscure news thread, specific discussion about the podcast in the podcast thread (since discussing of stuff like the interviews or tangents don't really belong in news threads), and a catch-all thread for Big Finish news including that announced in the podcast.
I really do appreciate the work put into the updates + podcasts threads by users here. Long live the Updates Club!

I have seen several remarks that people go to the updates rather then the podcast thread to receive whatever news is contained in the podcast. I would argue that if the news from the podcast remained in the podcast thread, more people would give the podcast thread a regular click. I've expressed how silly I think it is to have to go to a different thread to get the news relayed in the individual podcasts. Anyway, the way I did the post is how I would like to see it. Whoever starts the initial thread then updates that post as they listen through the podcast. Anyway.
