Something that has always stayed in my memory.. there was an article a few years back about the survivors of the culls of whole herds of Elephants in an African national Park over a thirty year period (I can't remember the exact number but it was somewhere between 10,000 to 15,000 killed). Anyway, researchers tested the young survivors for PTSD by playing the calls of other Elephants back at them - some would be familiar, others would not. In normal circumstances the herd instinctively would have gathered together in reaction to a stranger and reacted more warmly to a familiar call. But because these were orphaned survivors of (and let's face it there is no other word for it) a massacre, they didn't know what to do. They had no elders to guide them and learn from. They panicked and they ran away. And the truly dreadful thing is that it might happen all over again. And it's circumstances like that which have lead to the Akashinga. An all-female ranger unit, part of the International Anti-Poaching Foundation, who take a militarised Special Forces approach to the preservation of wildlife against poachers. Through nonviolent mediation or, if necessary, defensive might. Single mothers, widows, the displaced and survivors of domestic abuse have all joined their ranks. Their name means "the brave ones" in the Shona language. It's fascinating. And now I have learned even more thanks to you guys. I always have found other intelligent creatures on this planet fascinating, and did read the book about Alex the parrot who could really communicate with his owner, a researcher. The last chapter about him dying and he knowing that he would die and saying goodbye had me molten in tears.
However, seeing what humans do to each other, I am not surprised that other intelligent creatures, who are not much different from us, are treated in the most horrific ways.
But, as Wolfie says, luckily there are always positive stories that can give us hope.

Prompted by this quite genuinely delightful image: I did a quick bit of Googling and discovered this is an illustration of a real historical figure. One Edith Margaret Garrud, born 1872 and passed 1971, among the first female professional martial arts instructors in the Western world. She studied at a Japanese dojo in Soho. Hai!

- According to the scientific definition of a berry, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries aren't actually berries, but bananas, cucumbers, and peppers are.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed, but for S11's titles, the cast order changes depending on the episode number. Even numbered episodes like The Ghost Monument, Arachnids, Demons, The Witchfinders, and Ranskoor, Mandip Gill is credited before Tosin Cole, but the odd numbered episodes, like Rosa, Tsuranga, Kerblam!, and It Takes You Away, Tosin is credited before Mandip.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

today I learnt from the New To Who podcast (which is terrific, btw) that Leonard Nimoy was pegged to direct the TV Movie for a while and also spent many years in e/mail conversation with Terrance Dicks.

I'm feeling my age....44. Hello again Timelord 007, Moi aussi, the young man in the chippie was complaining to his mate that he felt old at 25! That's not old at all, I gently reminded him, try being, at 46, on the way to 50! Or as my delightful daughters remind me being 'Oldie CaBaldie'. Me, I still feel 20 something, although my knees feel much older!

Sadly it's all the racing around i doingg since my dad's fall & illness November 2017, it kinda catches up with one eventually.

That Mcdonalds are now using paper straws in their shakes. Absolutely right too, but I'm getting mouth fulls of soggy paper by the time I've finished it.

"But some customers were unhappy with the new straws, saying they dissolved before a drink could be finished, with milkshakes particularly hard to drink"Well it's certainly true

WWII started exactly one week after the release of 'The Wizard of Oz'. The Wizard of Oz premiered on August 25, 1939 and WWII started on September 1st.
