Here's where it properly began for Tim Treloar as the Third Doctor (Light at the End was a cameo appearance). Personally I thought he nailed it right out of the gate. Tim absolutely knows the Third Doctor inside and out without impersonating Jon Pertwee. He inhabits the character absolutely and you never doubt it's not the Third Doctor.
And the main sticking point for lots of listeners, enough that it was removed for all future volumes. The narration. I didn't have an issue with it. It got the Brig in, and this is the only set thus far to have any recurring UNIT personnel. The Hidden Realm from volume 2 doesn't feature UNIT and Storm of the Horafax has new characters to represent UNIT outside of the Doctor and Jo. Richard Franklin and John Levene aren't in the cast list for volume 4.

By coincidence I'm re-listening to this now
I still think its too narration heavy especially Prisoners of the Lake but Tim Trelore is very good (and improves with every Boxset.
I love the "Audio" Debut of that Alien Race in Havoc one of the funniest things ever.
A solid 7/10 that left for more providing they were not narrated.

Just finished Prisoners of the Lake. It’s Pertwee era paint by numbers, but that’s more than fine for a debut story, and it’s pretty good. Treloar has the intonation of Jon Pertwee down to a tee. The voice is a little off, but I know that improves with the range, based on the trailers for the future sets, and it’s a fantastic first attempt.
The narration is a little heavy, but I understand its inclusion and I know it’s not in Volume 2 onwards, so not a major criticism. It doesn’t help that Treloar used his normal voice, which is very similar to his Doctor voice, albeit without the intonation.

Finished Havoc of Empires. Pretty much the same feelings as my thoughts on Prisoners of the Lake above. This is a great story for Jo, though!
I think I’m going to make a start on Volume 4 on my commute now. Shake it up a bit!

Anniversary listen-thru!! I just bumped up the existing thread.
I am probably one of the few who really liked the narration upon release of this one. One of the reasons was that I believed it was the only way we could get characters like The Brig or others who might be unavailable to record for whatever reason (death, retirement, etc.). As BF's first foray into major character recasts, I loved it. Tim Treloar was excellent from the first line, although he has refined and perfected his performance over the last 5 years. The third Doctor era is one of those odd things for me, where I don't particularly love The Doctor or the companion, but he ended up getting so many phenomenal stories that you just can't help loving it. I remember just reveling in all that I did like about the era when first listening.
As for the stories themselves, I think they stand up pretty well. Prisoner of the Lake is my favorite of the set, but not by much. Havoc is decidedly wonderful, with so many differing characters that all come together. Although I have to admit, I don't think the Jo as depicted on TV would have made a believable head of security. However BF ran with that and made her a much more rounded character, especially with this story. I do remember having a little bit of a hard time believing it at time of release, but with the subsequent stories that they have done I don't seem to have that problem now.
Next week: Blake's 7: Remnants

Its even a story so typical of its era and really gives Jo flesh having her OWn Doctor to relate to...now look how far from its humble beginnings it has gone... Totally enjoyable

Only listened to Prisoners so far, but I also remember liking Havoc a lot the first time around so I'm looking forward to that!
First off, the narration. It gives the range its own feel - in the EAs, the narration is reminiscent of the lost episode soundtracks. But here, there are still plenty of visuals spelled out in the usual way through dialogue, and the narration feels more like it's there to provide little flourishes and extra description. I'm fine that they dropped it, but it did add a certain storybook coziness.
Secondly, the story. Funnily enough, I just rewatched The Stones of Blood the other night - you know, the one with the crashed prison ship with a defender and a prosecutor, trapped on Earth for millennia, with an escaped prisoner trying to take advantage of the lawmakers' flaws? But of course the big difference is that this feels like a definitive Pertwee outing - base under siege, UNIT called in, a willfully obstructive boss character, technology that's a bit too advanced for the time period and the Doctor doing some cool action hero activity - in this case diving. Can't you just imagine Pertwee playing those scenes, just like his shot at being an astronaut in The Ambassadors of Death?
There are some clever little twists along the way, though; I like how the magnetic wave patterns explain both the missing recording and the takeover of the Excav suit.
Overall, it's Pure Early Seventies Who, written and performed well. For the first story in this series, what more could you want?

Oh man, I utterly adored Havoc of Empires when I first listened to it. Really need to revisit that sometime down the line.

I enjoyed listening to both stories, & am not surprised that the 3DA became a long running series, the quality of this first volume, the characters, voice acting, the writing, was superb. They nailed it in the first outing. The strength of this initial volume holds its own when compared to recent 3DA releases. 👍🏻 I also like the narration. & I like A.I. 💻😊
I’m happy that Katy Manning agreed to do this series & Tim Treloar is a gem. 💎
After this, I only have volume 5 left to listen to before volume 11 is released.

Yeah, people had a real problem with the narration when this set was first released, but I really liked it.
