Saturday 3rd March - John Lloyd presents an "Archive" on Radio 4 about Douglas Adams and "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy", and apparently refers to material in the Adams archive.
Series 6, based on Eoin Colfer's "And Anothing Thing", begins on Radio 4 on Thursday 8th March. According to the new issue of SFX (I don't think it's in the shops yet, but my subscriber copy turned up yesterday) Dirk Maggs has not only included snippets of unused Douglas Adams material here and there, he has introduced a brand-new plotline to the story for Arthur and Ford, derived from abandoned storylines from "Life, the Universe and Everything". (James Goss also used unused stuff from earlier drafts of this book in "Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen").

While I intend to listen to H2G2-6, I'm still unsure if I'll like the experience, as I did not much like Colfer's book. Just hoping this reworking means an improvement.
Now an "archive", that does sound like something I'd want to hear!

I still have to read past the beginning of And Another Thing but I can't say it grabbed me the same way the rest of the series did. I also really wonder how they'll adapt the beginning as it continues on directly from the end of Mostly Harmless (which the Quintessential Phase already did)...

I have mixed feelings about this. I didn't finish Colfer's book, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to hear a different take on it, especially with the original cast performing.
It's interesting how much time and effort has been spent in resurrecting so much of Adams' unfinished or "lost" work.

I liked And Another Thing, but not as a Hitchhiker's story. It was a bit too, er... straightlaced? A bit too humancentric? That might be the word for it...
Still, Colfer did as well as he could. They're very difficult to describe really, as books or radio plays. They have this sprawling, almost lounge-like travelogue style where it feels like whoever is doing the digression has calculated each mutter and moment of confusion down to the exact second to be retrospectively important:

Series 6, based on Eoin Colfer's "And Anothing Thing", begins on Radio 4 on Thursday 8th March. The John Lloyd programme is now available as a Radio 4 'Seriously' podcast, and the *extended* CD-exclusive version of episode 1 of the new series will be the Radio 4 "Comedy of the Week" podcast in a few days' time. What did people think of the first episode, by-the-by? I liked the fact that Dirk Maggs tried to reconcile his happy ending of the last series to the point that Eoin Colfer's book picked up the story, but it was all terribly talky, wasn't it? (I quite liked the 'Ford, focus!' joke, though)

Hmmm, why did Marvin need a new body? He lived in the previous body, due to time travel and maintenance, 5 times longer than the length of the entire of the universe anyway... basically, whatever time period your in, there are 5 of him somewhere about.
As for the story... was OK, but I didn't find myself laughing out loud. And yep, very talky.

I have not yet listened, want to do that all at once if I can, but in leadup to that, I did attempt once again to read Colfer's book. It wasn't quite as horrible this time, but I really did have to skip a lot of the "guide entries" along the way.

Okay, so I finished listening to this earlier today. (since I don't listen to audio drama sitting at my computer, I wanted these for my MP3 player, and the only way I know of doing this with BBC streams is the old-school method of playing them, while recording the output of my soundcard, which I did). They kept the framework of Colfer's book and probably put the best bits in there, I was kind of surprised as to how much they didn't put in, but then again, with them working in some of Douglas' unheard doodlings, there wouldn't have been room in 6 episodes. I wasn't too terribly annoyed by "guide entries" like I was with Colfer. Glad they worked in some kind of happy ending for Dent. Not sure if Marvin needed to be in there, even at cameo level, also, I guess I'm still partial to the original voice/treatment of the character.
I've not researched this yet, but by the end I could not help but wonder what kind of opinion that Colfer had of this adaptation.
