I've just seen Jake Dudman's 9th Doctor impression for the first time (about 2:47 here www.youtube.com/watch?v=G956eNq-vQo) and he's really good, better than his Tennant impression (though that one's pretty good too) and nearly as good as his Matt Smith. I haven't heard the Ninth Doctor Chronicles but I've heard Night of the Whisper and I thought Briggs did the voice pretty well, but sometimes sounded more like he was just doing a Northern accent rather than specifically impersonating Eccleston, whereas Dudman really nails the nuances of Eccleston's voice. For some reason the way he said 'Blue Peter' sounded particularly accurate. I wonder if Big Finish will get him to narrate any future 9th Doctor audios now that he's doing the 10th and 11th for them. I guess we'll have to see in April how good Dudman is as a narrator in general but based on this impression (and his skills as an impressionist in general, since he can probably do a lot of other characters voices too) I'd love to hear him narrate some 9th Doctor stories. Any thoughts? |

I agree his Ninth Doctor is far and away better than Nick Briggs's. Nick's impression seems like he's got a bit of a cold but Dudman is dead on. I personally think it's a shame they didn't get him in for all 3 Chronicles box sets- I think the backlash against him narrating the 10th and 11th Doctor sets would've been much more subdued if there was consistency across the range.

I still prefer Nick's impression, but Dudman doesn't do half bad. His Tennant and Smith impressions, though, easily outclass it.

I wasn't too impressed with Dudman in the trailer for the Tenth Doctor Chronicles, but Kieran's impression in New Earth was fantastic. But then, I should not probably judge Dudman by the trailer and wait for it to release before I decide whether I want it or not. |

Oh man he gets the inflections and pitches all off (even for 4th) his natural tone overwhelms them!

I am against audios featuring impersonators of living Doctors. If you can't get the actual actor now, be patient... Rome wasn't built in a day.
As for Jake's Ninth Doctor impression? I didn't think much of it.

I've done voice acting on and off, metre and cadence can potentially have a lot to do with it. Each actor goes at their own rhythm and somehow that can sometimes be a vital part of emulating them. Tom Baker's voice, for instance, tends to have an almost methodical(?) weight to it, so it ends up being rather slow compared to, say, Peter Davison's more breathless, hectic tone. Colin Baker's voice has a sort of punctuated emphasis as Sixie. Less like drums, more like thunder. Paul McGann on audio sounds almost lyrical. Poetic, light, but with every word chosen deliberately. I wonder if Dudman's impression was just a teeny bit slower (you can see him pause to think about what he's saying in Dulce Et), it would work even better? Some really nice impressions all the same, I rather like his David Tennant.  Reminds me more than a bit of Chris Thompson as the Second Doctor. Dead ringers and all that. |

Dudman is incredibly talented but honestly... I don't see the sales of the chronicles range being brilliant? I wouldn't hold your breath for another series of him as the ninth doctor.
I really think Big Finish should use his talents elsewhere. I could see him as a really great inclusion to the Eighth Doctor upcoming stories. A male companion is long overdue.

Can I ask a serious question: does anyone actually believe that Big Finish would recast the 9th and 11th Doctors with Dudman in the near future? Personally, I don’t think they should and really doubt that they would but (to me) some people seem to believe that’s what they are trying to do

It's honestly more like someone complaining how they recast Stephen Critchlow as All the Doctors in the Subscriber Short Trips. Dudman is the narrator of an audiobook, with occasional other actors. (Mind you, if that's not your bag, I get it. Some people aren't into narration.) |

I think the fact Jake Dudman is credited as "Narrator / The Doctor", which is exactly how Tim Treloar was credited for volume 1 of the 3DAs, is pretty telling when it comes to the recast question.
