Two points on new covers: - Will the Jenny boxset be rejigged to use the new logo? - Will the Companion Chronicles boxset use the new logo? If the answer to both is "yes", then we have a complete changeover by June (barring the Short Trips). CC almost certainly as BF haven't released it yet.
Jenny maybe

And removing the sidebar means the cover no longer shouts 'Big Finish' from ten feet away, which is a shame. The unique & recognisable style for CD artwork was a great idea imo. Although I suppose we will be getting fewer separate CDs in future and more multi-CD jewel case releases, so the sidebar would have been seen less frequently anyway. Actually looking closer they've gone with "Big Finish We Love Stories" instead of "Big Finish Productions".
"We Love Stories" is a fun tagline for fans but whether its an effective revenue generating Brand Slogan I not sure.

I've never been fond of it either, to be honest. Telling an audience they love stories is....nice, I guess? I get the idea behind it, we love the craft, but it's confusing for a new customer. It makes Big Finish sound like a distribuitor or a streaming service. Drama Beyond Imagination? or something along those lines would be better.

Ooh, I really like this. I think I've been trying to convince myself I like the sidebar for the last decade... but comparing it to the other versions - both of which are great - I seem to have failed. I especially like the version with the new logo.

I hadn't noticed - I was too busy glaring at the new 'Doctor Who' logo! Agree, the BF logo should be the name of the company or just 'BF', not the slogan. You have to know the company first to know the slogan or it wouldn't mean much imo.

You need to intice customers who see the releases in shops, as well.

I quite honestly... LOVE it. The look of the covers feel a lot more cinematic while still being able to retain the feel of whatever era it is apart of.

I like it. But then I was never the biggest fan of the sidebar as I always preferred the design pre Renaissance of the Daleks.
This should give more focus to the artwork rather than a sidebar with the Doctor's face on it.
I always found that aspect of it a bit unnecessary as more often than not the doctor would be on the artwork anyway

The new format looks amazing! I love the cleaner more streamlined look and the covers leap off the page so much more than the sidebar design. Although functional, my main problems with the sidebar were it took up half the cover with just a black strip so the actual artwork was always very crowded, and it doubled up on the Doctor's face. Look at things like the Third Doctor adventures where it's duplicate of exactly the same picture that's already on the cover, or the new Benny boxsets where there's just a giant number for no reason other than to fill up the space. This design is not only less cluttered, but more adaptable if some releases need more or less text on the cover, ie if a release has only a few or no featured actors, there isn't a half empty sidebar taking up most of the space on the cover.
My only thought is will this be the end for orange/red covers? I can't imagine that the new logo will show up very well. It doesn't have any sort of outline or anything that would make it stand out. That was definitely one benefit of the sidebar, it gave the logo and text something to stand out on so it didn't blend into the background. I wonder if there will be a differently coloured variant, perhaps? They already have a black version on the Tom Baker blu-ray...
I'm just hoping that Big Finish will re-release the covers for Time War and Ravenous with the new logo... pleassssseeeee?! It slightly ticks off my OCD to have the format change halfway through a series (or a trilogy if they don't redo The Lure of the Nomad). Definitely makes me think this was a decision way beyond Big Finish's control and has been pushed through with immediate effect by the BBC.
Anyhoo, glad of a change. We've had new variants of the McGann logo and new fonts, new Big Finish logos, etc. but this is the first major shake up of the cover format since 2007...!

OK for the new-new series since they want to rebrand, but not across everything else. Yes, somehow it's making the BBC seem sort of invasive, like next they want to break into my house and re-brand everything I already bought. Why can I not help but think that BF would probably have been perfectly happy to not go this route if left to their own devices? And removing the sidebar means the cover no longer shouts 'Big Finish' from ten feet away, which is a shame. The unique & recognisable style for CD artwork was a great idea imo. Although I suppose we will be getting fewer separate CDs in future and more multi-CD jewel case releases, so the sidebar would have been seen less frequently anyway. I was just ruminating over how the sidebar has probably come to stand for The Real Deal from clear across a store. I'll probably adjust (the Eight Doctor cover actually looks pretty good) but the first MR cover to look like this has really come as something of a shock.

Ok, I'm in two minds about the cover change - on one hand, I have to admit that the BBC pushing the new logo onto everything is beginning to make me dislike it. I get the marketing reasons and all, but it just doesn't sit right with me and I'd prefer to be able to keep the 'Classic' brand logo that's been around since 1996. But hey, nostalgia can't last forever. On the other hand, I *adore* the new cover layout! The sidebar was a neat idea as an observer, but I've found that whenever I try to make fan art covers for Big Finish stories, only being able to work with the right 3/4 or so was both not very fun and rather restrictive to the imagination. This new design just feels like a new, open door that I can't wait to see more from!

Just a thought, but I wonder what they're going to do with the Third Doctor Adventures? It feels like with this format it might be harder to get information about *two* stories onto one cover, and continuing to not actually picture the Doctor might be a lot more difficult...

Interesting... I like the new logo, but to me it really chafes to see it used on an era to which it doesn’t apply. On the other hand, the layout of the cover art with the new logo actually looks/flows better than with the classic/correct logo.

Of course, the Pertwee/McGann logo never applied to the Main Range Doctors either! Given that they can't feasibly do individual logos for every era (except on the reverse), personally, I think it makes sense to slap on the current logo. Like others have said, it means Big Finish isn't just the "old stuff" - Doctor Who suddenly becomes one big family, an ongoing story. (It's especially relevant for New Series material. Why should Tennant audios have a logo from the 70s?)

Eh, I don't think much will change. It'll just be the same showcase of two different monsters, only more cinematic.

It probably won't be a problem since the new design has a dark stripe at the bottom and the top with crystals (that remind me of the ones on the reveal video), and I guess they were placed there for exactly that purpose. They can be best appreciated on Tom Webster's clean version of the Time War cover. If you look at the reversible cover for Iron Bright, they're not there.

Thanks, that's very interesting to have an artist's viewpoint on the sidebar - I see what you mean about it being restrictive. (And your cover designs thread is superb, by the way!) So maybe the switch back to full cover art will pay off. Just a thought, but I wonder what they're going to do with the Third Doctor Adventures? It feels like with this format it might be harder to get information about *two* stories onto one cover, and continuing to not actually picture the Doctor might be a lot more difficult... Easily solved, they are going to have to show us Jon Pertwee at last! (And I'm not so sure that Tim Treloar isn't starting to turn into Jon, going by his latest performances! The best yet imo.)

Strange, isn't it? Jon's face was actually used for the Third series (on the sidebar), but for none of the others. Actually, having checked my downloaded covers, Jon is featured, but on the BF website, he is not. I imagine for this new release, we'll still get the partial silhouette of Doctor Three in the centre, with everything else (including perhaps a suggestion of Pertwee) built around it. It will be interesting to see what they do. I suppose thinking about it, there's no reason to have two versions of the same silhouette on the cover at all.
