DOCTOR WHO - MAIN RANGE » 241. RED PLANETSReleased August 2018SynopsisLondon, 2017. Except... it isn't. Berlin, 1961. But it isn't that either. Not really. Not in the timeline the Doctor knows. Something is very wrong. While Ace tries to save the life of a wounded British spy, Mel and the Doctor must get to grips with the modern day socialist Republic of Mokoshia. For Mel it feels strangely familiar and 'right', which makes the Doctor feel even more uneasy. Soon, a message from a dark and blood-soaked distant future is on its way... But the Doctor will have to act fast to stop this timeline becoming reality. And with Ace stranded in an alternate 1961, will saving the Earth end her existence? Written By: Una McCormack Directed By: Jamie Anderson CASTSylvester McCoy (The Doctor), Sophie Aldred (Ace), Bonnie Langford (Mel), Matt Barber (Tom Elliot), Elliot Levey (Colonel Marsden), Genevieve Gaunt (Anna / Commander of Phobos Mission), Max Bollinger (Sokolov), Chris Dale (Mission Control / Voice of Map / George / Television Announcer). Other parts played by members of the cast.

A very VNA style Synopsis Regards mark687 A more mature take on Ace and Mel, or rather any take that isn’t TV show characterisation would be much appreciated. The last time an Ace story took a New Adventures approach was Enemy of the Daleks. I remember noting that the cover for Maker of Demons felt like the cover of a New Adventure. Hopefully this cover evokes the same.

Can't wait to see where this arc goes next. Hmmm....the triolgey also looks to be more closely interconnected judging by the titles, as well.

Hmm I thought that our old pal Briggsy said something about an Ace & Mel Mars story in his massive Facebook Q&A - but sadly there's no good way to search through that without reading the whole thing again. So I can't recall if he explicitly said that was Red Planets or we all just assumed (or if indeed I'm misremembering entirely). Not that the synopsis says "No Mars Here!" - the title is Planets plural, after all...

Hmm, could be Ice Warriors, should be interesting though. Sounds a lot more like the New Adventures than any of the last few Seven, Ace and Mel stories. Kinda hoping for a Fenric comeback soon though to wrap up this arc, it would make sense.

I haven’t always enjoyed this run of Ace+Mel, but I really liked this one. The moodiness of the storytelling, the interesting story concept and how its three disparate plots were slowly and deftly weaved together, the music, the sparing but precise sound design, all of the actors (including the guests!) — all the moving parts of this release worked really, really well together.
If this is the calibre of Sylvester stories we have to look forward to for the rest of the year, I am very pleased indeed.

Great tale in the VNA style.
Cold War thriller, Temporal Anomalies, Moral Ambiguity, and well defined Relationships.
Very nicely done all round.

I found it very moody but for me it lacked something to take it to the next level. We're all different!

It always amuses me when people download BF stories and listen to them straight away... during the day! For me, BF stories (Doctor Who Main Range releases especially) are an event, so a bit like keeping the best food on the plate until last, I am saving Red Planets for tonight when I am in my recliner with my headphones on; my favourite listening environment!

I get up early - around 5:30-6 (depending on how quickly I roll my sleepy ass out of bed), and don’t start work till 9. Tons of time to listen before my day gets started

Listening to audios in the morning sounds strange to me!
