It all about the 3rd Episode.
The 1st 2 EPs are good (though Bill Oddie is slightly odd casting) then you get the hilarious EP 2 cliff hanger!
Ep 3 is genius one of best BF technical achievements ever but here's the kicker, just when it might start getting wearing, we get "Sally's Lament" and you realize its all to prevent a small personal tragedy becoming worse, some excellent performances from Helen Goldwyn and Colin Baker.

Listening to this for the first time at the moment. There's much that I like, with Evelyn telling a story and Sally asking questions, and rather amusing pirates. I even quite liked the singing. And I like the more emotional darker elements. But I'm not sure I ever want to listen to it again. I admire it as an experimental audio. But it's a bit too much for me.

As the pirate story is being told by Evelyn and the Doctor, there is a heavy application of unreliable narrator here. It's so blatant in one scene where they describe the same scenario differently. It works because the cliched pirate tropes clearly come from Evelyn's reading of books like Treasure Island and other pirate media, which Sally calls her out on. While it's assumed that the Doctor and Evelyn did encounter pirates, or at least that Evelyn lost Jem on a pirate adventure, it didn't play out the way it was presented. Episode three being a Gilbert and Sullivan musical is the ultimate example of this. Red Jasper being a hammy mustache twirling villain is Evelyn and the Doctor seeing him this way, with no insight into any backstory he may have had to make him more three-dimensional. It gives Jac Rayner a chance to have her cake and eat it too in regards to the pirate tropes, playing them straight and lampshading them in a way that's completely organic to the story.
The most interesting aspect to the story, with relistens, is identifying when things are likely made up or exaggerated due to personal bias or ulterior motives. How much of the story actually happened, and as presented is questionable and up to the interpretation of the listener. The whole truth will never be known.

I've said this multiple times, but this is not only my favorite Big Finish story - it might just be my favorite Doctor Who story, period. To me, this story just captures everything that makes the early Sixth Doctor and Evelyn stories so special. Like The Marian Conspiracy, it's the kind of story I just feel like listening to by a warm fireplace with a good cup of hot chocolate and wrapped in my favorite blanket. At times this story made me laugh and at others it made me tear up. It's not going to be to everyone's taste, but to me this story is just about as perfect as Doctor Who can get.

The songs are just hilarious, especially I Am the Very Model of a Gallifreyan Buccaneer which made me laugh my head off all the way. And that reminds me, I know this song is listed as Pt. 3, Track 2 (see Spotify link), but could somebody plz provide a list of tracks with the remaining songs?

Thx for that, @wolfie53 ! "The Dawning Day" actually appears on Ep.4: Track 7, immediately followed by the one-off theme arrangement. PS: How about "Evil Evelyn"? Isn't that one between "Enter Evelyn" and "For I Am a Pirate King"?

There's a battle going on between the Doctor and Evelyn's song and that of the Pirate King towards the end of the track.

Bit strange that they're both listed as two individual songs though.

I think it's because they're sourced from two different Gilbert and Sullivan songs -- "I Claim My Perjured Lover, Nanki-Poo" and "Oh Better Far to Live and Die".

Helen Goldwyn truly has such a beautiful singing voice, along with her acting, writing, and directing which I've listened to in other DW-based productions. Speaking of her character Sally, where exactly do the 'present' scenes take place? Doubt it'd be at the university campus where Evelyn teaches. Maybe her own apartment?

It felt a bit too homey for somewhere like a share house or a dorm. Speaking of placement, though, someone came up with a rather lovely idea of where to stick it in terms of continuity. Publishing-wise, it comes just after Jubilee, but for the Doctor and Evelyn, maybe it takes place just after Arrangements for War? Helping in a way that they weren't permitted to on Világ.

I get why some have an extreme reaction to it: it can be a deceptive bugger and for some, the songs are a step too far. Not me - love this one. Great emotional core that perfectly cuts through the goofy songs and villain, and one of the more sincere and affectionate offerings from BF's more experimental, even aggressive, early days. Not that goofy is bad - Colin is so game for it.
