Dumb Waiter is tremendously fun. I adored the first part and the second is really good too. I was a bit sceptical about putting Leela in, but it worked so well!

Have to admit, I love every single one of them. Just good as each other in very different ways. Companion viewpoints, varying narratives and structures, they all make the perfect boxset for all Whovians.

Dumb Waiter
Yes this is what a Jamie and Leela meet up should be!
Both practical skilled straightforward doers, humour judged right. Its been a while since we've had a comic but sinster villain and Ms De Winter fits the bill, Lovely Leela/Doc interactions, once she susses him out its just another Doc/ for him a mix of hope and fear of the future.
Iron Lady
Though this weakest story for me it dose a very strong thing it nearly humanizes Zoe, her logic challenged by Marie's pure faith and just her feelings almost laid bare.
Tactics of Defeat
Love this Great BF UNIT showcase for Daphne Ashbroke and Matthew Brener always plays a good villain. Excellent 2 hander scenes between them and a good choice of location.
Outstanding job Mr Tony Jones.

mark687 Thanks - the initial brief had South America and a location with obstacles, the setting evolved from their. In my mind (and by total chance) it aligns with the recent UNIT / Auctioneer arc both in terms of setting and some of the ideas. It's a very dark feeling story, more so when the set starts with such fun as dinosaurs and Elliot Chapman's twins!

All thymically very different but they still all fit the 2nd Doctor's Era!

Only heard Curator's Egg so far, and it was such a pleasant ride! I hadn't realized how much the Companion Chronicles needed a splash of pure fun.

I had intended to listen to the stories of this set as part of a Second Doctor marathon of TV and audio stories. Naturally I caved within a day of it being released and listened to Dumb Waiter. Aaaand I loved it. The story itself is very simple but well-told with just enough twists and turns, but the real heart of the matter is Leela meeting the Season 5 TARDIS team. There's a triple frame narrative, the kind that only the Companion Chronicles can provide, and the vocal talents of Frazer and Louise are shown off spectacularly. Every time Louise gets to do a different voice from Leela, I'm thrilled. (I recently relistened to Nightshade and forgot her cameo as a senior citizen in it. Made me smile and say "Louise, what are you doing here?!" Same sort of thing with her Jotunn appearance.) Now, a couple specifics: Frazer manages to turn in two different narrations, with the Doctor picking up the story for a bit here and there. It shows how clear a voice he gives to both characters and it makes the story something very unique. (I do wonder, however, if Debbie might have narrated some of this if she had still been with us.)
Final point: I liked the scene with the Fourth Doctor quite a bit. His distant mysteriousness had an air of "I walk in eternity" about it, plus him providing the title (and the edit!) for the story is an inspired joke. Now, who provided the theme tune and sound effects - him or the TARDIS?

Rob Harvey's music suite is simply wonderful. Thank you so much for doing these isolated music tracks!

I've not got this yet so I'm not going to read the posts...
But this seemed a good place to check if it has been mentioned on here that Elliot Chapman is currently in The Mousetrap cast in the West End. I'm sure he'd be delighted to see people from here go along to see the show.

I'm not sure the set actually had any weak stories. This may well have been the most perfect story of the set since I could not think of even the tiniest complaint. I just don't think it was quite as "flashy" as the other stores, more like it was simply the most "true to its era" story of the four.

My take on this set of stories is now up at Cultbox - and congratulations to our own Tony Jones for his cracking tale 'The TicTacs Tactics of Defeat' which rounds out the set!

Thought The Iron Maid was a little meh. The story didn’t particularly grab me and it didn’t help by the bizarre decision to have Frazer do the Doctor and Jamie... and then Wendy! And then back to Frazer a while later! What?!

The Dumb Waiter was quite fun, but I was a little sad that it broke the convention of not mentioning Time Lords or other stuff in order to keep with the era. I suppose if one views it as a bit of a Two Doctors thing, since Four is technically in there for a moment and Leela is one of the viewpoints...
The Iron Maid was... interesting. It had a bit of a slow burn, like a barely lit candle of dread slowly melting down, until we finally figure out what's going on. I wasn't aware of this particular historical figure prior to this play and kind of assumed this was going to be a "Zoe is mistaken as Joan of Arc" thing going into it. I can see why people are saying that it might be the weakest of the set, but I quite liked it.
Now, onto the last entry!

Just finished the first story. It's good fun, but I thought it got a bit technobabbley.
It's great to hear the extras focus on stuff like sound design, rather than having all the actors say how 'lovely' everyone is.

Loved reading the article! So interesting to see some parts of the creative process! Also, Tactics of Defeat was fantastic and that lovely speech by Zoe was the absolute cherry on top of a beautiful piece!

This was a fantastic release, and probably some of my favorite 2nd Doctor stories ever. It had a great mix of stories. The Curator's Egg was a wonderful bit of fun, Dumb Waiter was a fantastic meeting of the Doctor's friends from two very different eras, Iron Lady was a great historical, and the Tactics Of Defeat was such an original story that called back to Two's era without him entering the story at all. Great job Tony Jones!! What a fantastic finale!
