I have the Audiobook ready to listen to via an Audible credit. Will be getting the hardback next time I am at Waterstones, as would rather support the high street than getting it via amazon. Use it or lose it, same as HMV really - the prices are no different whet postage is accounted for.
Reading all about it in DWM, what my 13yo self would have thought of the idea that it would see the light of day 33 years later in the hands of Tom Baker. Quite remarkable. A fellow fan at school predicted that Dr Who would never go away, that it was too significant to be forgotten. Even so I would never have imagined that we would be so well served with Classic Who as we are now, both in terms of Big Finish productions and Novels from the original sources (Baker & Saward, not forgetting David Fisher beefing up his stories for audiobook readings in place of Terrance Dicks originals) and of course the Blu Ray releases.

This is absolutely brilliant! I got the audiobook and Tom Baker is having an absolute blast reading this. He laughs and makes little comments like- "chapter X, you will love this one!" I haven't finished it yet but I can already recommend it wholeheartedly. It is much better than I expected and I am enjoying it! I am half way through the audio reading and agree with your post - this is so much fun! It is nothing like the story breakdown I tried to read in DWM all those years ago. Also despite the fact that his name is on the back cover Mr Briggs inclusion came as a complete surprise! And the description of what he was voicing was brilliant and I hope Big Finish pick up on that design.

I was always unsure if Scratchman was a great film that never got made or a near miss. Well, if the script was anywhere near the quality of the novel, it was definitely the former. Tom Baker writes (and reads!) with incredible enthusiasm and the story strikes a perfect balance between absurdity and horror. I was afraid that Tom Baker would lean too much into his later style of performance, where the Doctor seems to never face any real challenges, but the story really pushed the fourth Doctor to his limits and he performed it brilliantly. There were quite a few surprise appearances that I very much enjoyed. I'm glad that this was a novel and not a full-cast audio: Ian and Sarah were the right choice for companions and there are some tremendous visuals that wouldn't have come across right at all. Utterly marvelous. 10/10

Awesome audiobook, Tom's narration is humourous & terrifying & the story is bonkers but brilliant (Mrs Tullock character is deliciously selfishly evil), Doctor Who at it's most bizzare & imaginative definitely worth the 40 year wait.
I easily rate it 5/5.

So finished the read and it is delightfully bonkers, like a fusion of Holmes and Adams. For anyone who has doubts about the book's legitimacy and Tom's authorship, I can assure it just radiates pure Baker: Dark, funny, eccentric and even a little pensive and morbid at times, it has a distinct stamp on both the prose and the actual plot. What Goss may have done seems more in the realm of continity nods and recontextualizing certain elements to give it more unity. The bits with the records and the airport aren't here, for instance.
Granted, would it have worked as a film? Probably not, mostly for its extravagant visual aspect (i.e. the pinball scene, a chase through some very special TARDIS rooms) but you have to admire how just go-for-broke it is.

It's delicious. Completely nuts and would have been far beyond any budget they could have raised but it's a lovely, lovely novel and Tom's reading of it is utterly sublime. It's a lovely thing.

Question: Why haven't I got this yet?
Answer: Because credit only when credit's due (on Audible) and a shiny new credit has just now dropped into my account. Now then, what shall I do with it? (Huge good-humoured Fourth Doctor-style laugh )
(I've enjoyed your review comments everyone, thanks! Soon I'll be hearing for myself. )
