Since this is on vinyl at Sainsbury's while limited stocks last, I figured might as well set up a thread to discuss it.

I think releases such as this should be appreciated for what they are. The Paul McGann & Tom Baker single disc two part adventures provide a good one hour fix of Doctor Who without the writers feeling the need to add 'layers' to the plot to justify a double disc run time. The classic series had plenty of filler mid episodes and Big Finish can sometimes overcompensate with multiple narrative threads where more than one disc is concerned.
That is to say that this story works perfectly fine as an undemanding listen with a satisfactorily self contained bit of business for the Doctor and Leela, an appealing turn from Mark Benton (Mark Gatiss will like that his character is from Darlington perhaps? I thought Benton's accent was a bit 'oop north' in this, till I found he really is from these parts, as am I) and of course a few barking Daleks for the 4th Doctor to flippantly rile like no other Doctor did. More for the casual fan and 70's series nostalgists maybe - hence the Sainsbury's Vinyl testing of the waters, perhaps?

This was clearly chosen for the vinyl release in a big supermarket chain that potentially people who've never heard BF before might pick up because it's got Tom and the Daleks in it, it's completely standalone, and it's short so you can get it on a single record. As opposed to it being because it's any good, because it's not.

Just about an okay release.

Fairly standard stuff. Leela baffled by 21st century culture, Daleks scheming about something or other. There are worse ways to while away an hour, and they're in this very range.

Nothing wrong with it its a standard solid BF, the only problem is it comes after 2 very strong stories indeed. It might've been better to have had it be the 1st story of the 4DAs as was originally intended.

I liked Energy of the Daleks when it came out. Tom, Leela and Daleks, what wasn't there to like? I felt it was a good story back then and I did enjoy listening to it. But when you compare it now to other stories in the 4DA range; the two preceding stories (as mentioned) and the likes of Justice of Jalxar, The Auntie Matter. Crooked Man, Requiem for the Rocket Men, Sons of Kaldor, Haunting of Malkin Place, etc. (I could go on) you find that Energy of the Daleks is a little bit short on substance and it's just an average enough story that happens to feature Tom's Doctor and Daleks. The 4DA's are a strong range with some top quality stories, unfortunately they leave this release in the shade a bit. (I just did a full 4DA listen through in preparation for part two of Series 7, so they are all fresh in my mind.)
Energy of the Daleks is a perfect choice for marketing purposes though! I'd be sceptical on how many casual fans it would attract to Big Finish, but anyone new to our club is welcome.

Did a re-listen of FDA Season 1 recently and in terms of how I liked them, I would put Iceni first, Renaissance Man second with the rest of the season tied at #3. Nerva, Energy, Oseidon and White Worm are all fun stories, nothing groundbreaking - and the whole season is extremely re-playable (and as everyone has noted above, very marketable).

It’s alright. Mark Benton is by far the best thing in this story.

Well after a slight detour to Roman occupied Britain...the first thing that does grab me about this Cd is the artwork it is a great cover. It was never going to be phenomenal really as let’s be honest The Daleks are the Daleks but way back then they were not over used as they seem to be now so it was a standout tale especiAlly for me as it was audio Toms first meeting with them (though I think not the first written for audio Tom) I liked the provisional title Dalek Moon Rising From the inside cover it was the first story they recorded with Tom(I always thought it was Foe From The Future for some reason ,but it doesn’t show.
strangely Leela doesn’t recognise Horses after just being in Roman Britain John Dorneys acting in this is a bit flat

For all its faults it’s definitely a good gateway audio into Big Finish.

For all its faults it’s definitely a good gateway audio into Big Finish. I don’t get too picky about stuff as a Doctor Who story it’s solid enough and the cliffhanger is very...well ,Dalek 😎I think in my mind I would have ended it on Leelas fabulous interrogation by the metal monsters

This was the first Big Finish release I ever heard. I got on the Big Finish train because of Tom Baker's return and picked one that looked fun. Hundreds of stories later I guess it's safe to say that I'm hooked.

Apologies if this is sort of irrelevant to the subject, but Energy of the Daleks was originally planned to feature Sarah Jane Smith as the companion. Five other 4DA audios were written before Elisabeth Sladen's passing, which include The Sands of Life/War Against the Laan and The Dalek Contract/The Final Phase, but does anybody know which one was the sixth?
