I gave this a listen last weekend, out of curiosity. I certainly don't think it is mediocre, just hard to follow in a first listen and does not really get you thinking that you must give it another two hours of your time. Unlike Scaredy Cat, for instance, I was not bored by it and quite happily listened to it all in one sitting, whereas the aforementioned had me impatient for it to finish at it was going nowhere. McCoy here was on form to my judgement at least and it was a lot more sci-fi oriented than I had assumed. I had thought it may be a trippy Ayers Rock, Walkabout mystic musing in the Outback with Aboriginal folk (wouldn't have minded that actually), but then I had not studied the cover art or blurb prior to hitting play.
Once again, it was one of those releases that needed focus and not a casual listen (which I was guilty of once again) but did not get me thinking that I must stop whatever else I was doing at the time. But then I was not minded to skip to something else instead. As others here have said though, there are a lot worse in the Main Range with similar ratings and perhaps it is its accessibility rather than lack of substance that is its weakness.
All said though, I agree that it is more of a mid ratings release and does no disservice to the range. I would rather listen to this again than some of the latter day fare.
Oh and as for Hex - a good character, but to me his Scouse accent always makes me think of 'Tinhead' - his major TV role on Brookside from 1996-2003, when he was in his mid teens. Back then he was introduced as the Bully figure who mellowed under the elder role model of 'Mick Johnson' - Louis Emerick (better known the Black Police Patrolman in Last of the Summer Wine for 55 episodes over 22 years) and served to demonstrate how characters are formed by their influences and presence or absence of a father figure.
