*Summons the Special Weapons Dalek...* The 666th Rule of Updates Club is... You Do Not Diss Updates Club
On a personal level, I wish to point out I didn't post any 'out now' links for 'Iron Bright', duplicate or otherwise, {Spoiler} because I forgot it was release day and missed by about 10 hours... That might have been a bit late for getting away with another 'announcement' post, I grant you What was the announcement that BF kept tweeting months and maybe even years later - it was something like the extras for The Witch From The Well were now in accounts - and whatever bot they used for auto-updates just regurgitated it every so often. THAT was a late update! On topic although seeing multiple people posting the same thing can be mildly irritating I really don't think it's ban-worthy even for 24 hours. I agree. I suppose multiple postings are going to happen with people wanting to be the first to broadcast news of a latest release. If it annoys, don't respond; the post will soon disappear due to lack of traffic.

- Post Counter, duplicate posts and placeholders. Don't create posts in such a way as to inflate your post count and don't deliberately make duplicate posts. Don't create threads on topics where you yourself have nothing to say, others can create the threads they need as they need without your help.

The rule was aimed at duplicate posts by the same person. Though I admit sometimes the same person may post the same update in multiple threads. And almost invariably is asked by a moderator not to do it.

See that's my confusion, I thought the same Post by the same User in the Update Thread and in a relevant Discussion Thread (if there was one) was Ok and multiple Users Posting the same Update was what the "problem" was?

That was my understanding from reading the thread and what I was referring to when I said I found it annoying. What mark687 describes is 2 posts per update, each in a different thread, which I think is fair enough. I don't think that's unreasonable and if the Updates Club want to have a race each time that's also fair enough. It's when the silver and bronze medallists from the race then decide to post it twice as well that it becomes annoying.

mark687 and lidar2: Two posts as described (in the update thread and a relevant discussion thread) can be a problem, depending on what you mean. We don't need the same update in the updates thread and the podcast thread, for example. But you might want an update about a specific release in the release thread and in the updates thread, and I don't think anyone would have a problem with that. But often what happens is an update is posted in more places than that. Also, we don't need multiple people giving us the same update in multiple threads. Or starting a new thread to make an update that is already in a thread where you'd expect it to be. If you make an update and than see someone made it a few seconds before you, so it's above your post, just delete it, instead of turning it into a discussion of "who was first", which has happened way too many times. It may have been amusing to some the first time, but it has become annoying to many on the forum at this point.

Reading this thread has been a salutary experience. Personally I have never been annoyed by the behaviour of any current posters on DU.
Where I have posted occasional updates (or chatted about 'priority', or posted the infamous Rules of Updates Club) it has been done only in a spirit of helpfulness in the first case and playfulness in the others. I'm very sorry if any of my posts have caused annoyance to any other members but it's one of the problems of online chat that 'spirit' is very hard to communicate, even with all the emoticons in the world.
Any banter about Rules and update primacy was merely 'a game, within a game' and never intended to annoy. I skip what are 'noise' posts I'm not interested in while hardly noticing I'm doing it, so it had never occurred to me that others might find such (to them) 'noise' posts actually annoying. Or worse, that this might cause work for the mods as complaints are raised.
I post very few updates anyway, but in future I'll content myself by reading (and finding interesting and useful) updates posted by others.
The final Rule of Updates Club is: Updates Club was a joke (and not even my joke to begin with.) It should not, please, become a collective label under which forum members are collectively criticised.

Honestly, I haven't ever seen you do anything that contributed to the issue that some have complained about. So please carry on as you were.

Honestly, I've never seen any of your posts be even a slight issue....apart from the ones saying Jon Pertwee is the best Doctor. You should get a ban for that!

I don't think you or any of your posts were the culprit for this discussion... in fact I thought the Updates Club stuff was a good craic. (Funny because some of your 'rules' hit the nail on the head!) Your posts are great to read mate, don't post any less at all, just carry on number13 ...

My personal favourite was the "you went back and edited your post so it doesn't really count it's not as valid" rule.. LOL.. that was thrown about 1 or 2 times. Actually made me laugh out loud- considering it happens a lot in the last few months.

Examples of such is the situation with posting Big Finish updates in which it is always a battle to post links, people posting the same thing in multiple areas to inflate post count when they have been told that they should not be Totally agree with this. Seeing the the same post in different threads by the same couple of people all the time (they know who they are and why they do it) is one of the reasons I have started to use this forum a lot less. It makes the place extremely cliquey

There is not a problem with what's being done and it's certainly not plagiarism. Plagiarism is: "the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own." That's not what's going on here. No one is posting these things in the forum and saying it's their own work. In fact, they're using it to promote someone else's work. They are not personally benefiting from it or getting any monetary gain, so it's not a copyright infringement, either, anymore than it would be when a reviewer puts the producer's image and synopsis of a story on a site to accompany their review of the story. You need to get rid of the post count as well!!A lot of problems occur because of it.Double.triple,and quadruple posting of the same update or news, just because of one-upmanship,trying to beat someone else to the punch, and have more posts than them. Its puerile and pathetic!! So very very true

See previous comments about the limitations of free forum software with regards to the ability to eliminate post count. I don't get the hate on post counts. I'm aware that some folks are trying to boost their posts and playing a bit of one-upmanship with each other (annoying but not ban-worthy, IMNSHO), but what is the issue with post counts? My own Wishlist of features to get rid of would include a ban on people liking their own posts. And, FWIW, I think the mods on this board do great work.
