Now attached to DW MR Iron Bright Bonus Content
Very good story and an obvious candidate for the ST Rarity Range in the future

I listened to this story a couple weeks ago. An enjoyable little story that takes you for a trip through a day in Jo's life and ends up in a place you may not have been expecting. (I admit I was not expecting it to conclude as it did.) Just read Tony Jones' nice little review of it.

Oh, and for you search geeks, searching for the release title in totality within the search for this board brought up zero results.
I found this thread by searching for "grant". It also comes up if you search for "granted". "Taken", oddly, gives no results at all.

As much as Stephen Crichlow’s narration was lovely, I think it’s criminal that this story wasn’t narrated by Katy Manning in the regular Short Trips Series.

Do we know why it wasn't?

Do we know why it wasn't? I imagine it would be because it was commissioned specifically as a subscriber exclusive

Do we know why it wasn't? The subscriber Short Trips for the next year are all runners-up from last year's Paul Spragg competition. (Including mine, out in June.) They weren't commissioned as normal STs because that was Selim's winning prize. Also, Taken for Granted is just lovely, and the last few minutes were a fantastic surprise.

So, they weren't read by the actor who portrayed the character (if still around and available to do so) because the stories were written by runners-up to the Paul Spragg competition? Didn't know that was how it works. Which story was yours?

Well, the Subscriber Short Trips have been around for a while, and for the past several years, they've brought in Stephen Critchlow to do them all. (And I'm certainly not complaining - Critchlow is just marvelous.) So they're designed to be low-cost subscriber exclusives. This year's SSTs are all Paul Spragg runner-ups, but that's just a one-off thing, apparently. Mine's called Still Life. Another Jo story! Guess I wasn't paying attention to the fact that all the SSTs were read by Critchlow in recent years, as I tend to intersperse the subscriber short trips with the regular short trips when I'm listening. Though I was certainly aware when I was listening to a story read by him, if you see what I mean. I see we will need to wait almost a year to hear yours.

As a long-time Jo fan (I may have mentioned this before... ) I enjoyed this story hugely and agree, it should have been a regular monthly release and must surely be in the 'Rarities' collection in due course. For now, what a treat for subscribers as was the Evelyn story in March.
The story drew me in as I tried to work out when this was for Jo and the highlight for me was the 'fight' in the woods when someone appears as an obvious Doctor stand-in with a wig and flips two of the "aliens" into forward somersaults with a flick of his wrists! In other words, TV stunt 'throws' just as the HAVOC team did so well in those days; loved it.
And later we find out the Doctor's stand-in was Sgt. Benton! (I'd have been very tempted to make the stand-in a Sgt. Walsh. )
Finally, it was great how Jo turned the tables on her 'captors' at the end and fun to meet her mysterious and highly-placed uncle at last - and to find he was a sort of 'M' to UNIT. No wonder the Brig. had to give Jo the job when he said so.
And Jo was the perfect candidate, wasn't she?!
I'm looking forward to 'Still Life' too! The Third Doctor's era has seemed a bit under-represented in the regular STs recently, but some great bonus stories have more than made up for that.

Thanks very much for the kind words of appreciation for the story. It’s good to hear that other fans of the show have enjoyed Jo’s adventure. Thank you Ian for a great Short Trip and for taking the time to give us the background info - it's always interesting to hear the behind-the-scenes of BF productions and I know that all of us on DU appreciate it when a writer or production team member drops in to say hi.
And welcome to the forum! We are a friendly bunch on here I think and hopefully you'll find some of our chatter interesting enough to visit from time to time!

This forum looks a very civil place to hang out for some Doctor Who chat. Welcome, Ian. Great story. I enjoyed it a lot. If you're the writer of Taken for Granted, you'll need a special title here. Hope you'll stick around. And don't forget to tell us how you found the forum.

Thanks Ela. I made sure the poll was the first thing I did. (No special titles needed though! I’m rather looking forward to seeing the different epithets the longer I’m here). Well, okay. We've recognized other BF writers (including Paul Spragg winners) and BF peeps who want it by putting them in the Big Finish Creative Team group, but I think that does wipe out your ability to see the "rank" under your name. I have no idea what my rank is cause my "Moderator" title shows instead of my rank.

What a delight. A wonderful prologue to Terror of the Autons - going into the story, I knew when it was set so I was wondering just how the Doctor had forgotten Jo after defending her in the forest. Of course I didn't catch the hint of the "Doctor" calling Jo "miss"!
Fantastic job, Ian. This easily could have been the winner last year. Now I'm looking forward to hearing the other runners-up even more, if they're all this quality. (And welcome to the forum!)

A wonderful and exciting backstory for Jo Grant. Loved it all the way: the plot, the music, and of course the narration. Not saying that it's better than Forever Fallen or Landbound, I sincerely hope Taken for Granted will be among the Short Trip Rarities, in the near future.
PS: For Ian Hidewell - How challenging was it to draft your 5000-word Short Trip, as well as outlining your synopsis and opening extract?
