I want to buy this and listen so badly, but someone was an idiot and put the cd onto his Christmas list and can't buy it until afterwards in the case he might get it. FWP.

I have to wait until my wife hands it to me on Christmas day and even then it is likely to be a day or two before I get a chance to listen ...
I could listen on the BF app but I would feel like a cheat doing that

Lol. The struggle is real. The attempts to red as much non spoilery reviews is the only thing that is keeping me going.

Does the wish list have a Purchased/Unpurchased filter? If it does you can always cheat and see if someone got it. If not, remove it and purchase it yourself.

It’s a Master lite, as though Derek Jacobi only spent a day in studio. It’s nothing to do with the Time War, aside from a brief mention at the end.
And yet The Master of Callous works brilliantly on the whole. It’s got some terrific world building and a guest cast of characters. The Persistence of Dreams is absolutely bonkers, but it all becomes apparent in Sins of the Father, an episode which wraps the whole story up very well indeed. The Ood are a fantastic addition and the Master’s threat is felt throughout, despite him appearing very little. Derek Jacobi is magnificent, of course, and pure evil.
I think if you liked The Sky Man from Only the Good, then you’ll love The Master of Callous.
I’m interested to see how Rage of the Time Lords pans out having listened to the trailer!

I think you've summed it up perfectly for me. I did feel a little short changed by the lack of Jacobi, but at the same time I did often find myself totally engrossed in this world they had created. Time flew by, even if it wasn't quite the experience I had anticipated. I hadn't heard the Ood on audio before, so it wasn't hard to almost feel like it was the Saturday afternoon in the noughties again. I do hope they appear again someday. As for that trailer, well I almost hastily pre-ordered vol.3 before realising that it's Xmas and I'm skint . However, that was a lovely present in itself.

Not reading comments.
Watched E1 and am party-way through E2.
This is the Master. I suppose it helps that I already loved Jacobi's performances, but this really is the Master. Perfect calculated malevolence, and he's no panto buffoon (Ainely). I really do like Beevers and MacQueen quite a bit, but Jacobi might just be my favorite.
He's not merely indifferent or humorously/callously or any other sort of indifferent (say, Beevers or MacQueen); he is.....well I said it already, he is perfectly calculated malevolence. Listening to Call of the Dead, all I could think is
{Spoiler}
Yes, that is exactly what you would say to that character if you wanted to leave them in hopeless misery, to break them.

Definitely not what any of us expected after Only the Good The Ood just walking about with a old fashioned every ringing phone calling out to people in there lowest moments is brilliant but... I don’t think the characters were as strong as in OTG.
At the end of the first story you clearly assume “oh the Master is gonna cause chaos this way” but it kinda gets dropped and it would have been helpful to know what the stuff they were mining actually was.
It felt very small scale but then I guess this is probably the first chronologically.
As the title suggests I’d assume after ep 2 he’d slowly rise up and be the Master of Callous but 🤷♂️
I don’t really know what to think? I didn’t really get a feel for what the colony “looked” like unlike with the other set
I’ve not listened to the special features yet so that might explain and help me understand more...
TL:DR After Only the Good I knew it was gonna be something different and it was different but very safe and mundane but Ood are excellent

Call for the Dead{Spoiler} This really does feel like a novel and what a superb opening chapter. The Master systematically tears apart lives...for what end? Totally agree about the book It feels like it’s a “Missing Master Adventures” Hey imagine if instead of “Doctor Lite” episode we got an episode which was just about the Master or some other time lord villain or baddie Know considering Whittaker’s era is very Hartnell so far I doubt many would appreciate or get a new Who version of Mission to the Unknown

I liked that the phone rang four times, each time it rang.

Like the last box set, which was basically a Doctor Who story where the Master was pretending to be the Doctor, this is simply a Doctor Who story where the Doctor doesn’t bother to turn up at all. You have all the elements - injustice, eccentric but fundamentally likeable locals, darsdardly plots a plenty and the Master scheming away in the background.

If this was the first War Master boxset then I might have liked it more but after the brilliance of Only the Good this feels like a step backwards. It was a decent idea to have him in the background manipulating events but there wasn't really enough story for the running time. 3rd episode for example was mostly filler. Can't see myself listening to this again sadly.

My biggest fear going into this set was that it wasn't going to compare to how good the first set was. I'm very happy to say I was completely wrong. This set really gets you to put your heart into it and then, just like the first set, it rips it in two while you look on in horror. The climax of the final story in this set is really chilling. This was easily a 5/5 set for me, just like the first set was. Having heard the trailer for the next set, I'm a little apprehensive, but I can't wait to see where this amazing series takes us next!

Do they nominate for music awards? Rob Harvey is breathtaking.
Listened to part one. The devil is loose on Callous and the saints aren't coming. Is James Goss a pen name for Stephen King?
Doctor, if you are out there, please help.

In addition to finding its own way to be every bit as good as the first set, I'm thrilled that I think this set made such good use of The Ood (who are one of favorite New Series innovations). That feels like something of a first even when there have already been other Big Finish stories that feature them.
