From what I gather, this is a very divisive set but I applaud Big Finish for their creativity here. I don't quite get all of it but I enjoyed it. What I like about this series is how it contrasts The Master with the Doctor. Whereas The Doctor admires the culture and history of different worlds, The Master views other cultures as beneath him. He views the inhabitants of these worlds with contempt and disgust. The Master uses all methods at his disposal in order to get what he wants. Though I do find it quite interesting that the Master displays a level of respect towards the Ood that he does not show towards other species. He clearly values the Ood's abilities and finds them to be a surprisingly capable species.

Yeah, it's quite impressive. Regarding the Ood, I think the Master's... affection? evaluation of them is based more on the fact that they basically function as perfect vessels for his will--their individuality is easy for him to subjugate as he acts as their hive-mind, so to speak.
The Master has had slaves before, many (like that time he made the Daleks a slave race), but there's always been that threat of rebellion and betrayal: but the Ood, uniquely, are wholly subservient.

This Master in particular seems to have and express affection for various things (such as the flower at the end of Master of Callous, whereafter he threatened to declare war on Gallifrey if Narvin so much as touched it). Maybe he sees something beautiful in how their compliant nature hides something truely monstrous.

I get the feeling that if anyone had managed to escape Callous the Master would have let them go. After all, more people saying “Don’t go to Callous, it’s full of homicidal Ood” benefit him.
