I will buy box by box.I enjoyed the first episode. It didn’t feel like either a Unit or a Torchwood. Its an entity in its own right going by episode 1 The first four Counter Measures box sets are really very good. As are the Main Range & Worlds of Doctor Who appearances. I never really got why it relaunched as New Counter Measures from a creative standpoint except as a way to try and reignite interest in the range. And now that I write that I realize that maybe that was the first real clue that the range was losing listeners or wasn'r performing as well as BF would like. I know the main range stories and have the world special edition set also. I liked this though as it seemed set apart from Doctor Who. Infact am listening to this one again. They should give a series a rest at times to refresh the ideas and reignite the creativity am all for it.I think the problem with Big Finish is they shoot their own foot by having so many spin off ranges all at once when perhaps nurturing and marketing of existing ranges is called for...I am new to it now as i was new to dark Shadows and Am now a firm supporter of the range as i will be with others i believe in.Survivors am all for a pause in the range i mean its been a great range.Come back to it when they have refreshed.Look at Walking Dead it needs to pause and come back stronger. But its all about the money nowadays...bottom line which is sad when it is about creativity

Thanks i really enjoyed that Episode and given that it was FREE am expecting that if BF can give that one away free the rest are probably a very high standard.Even the incidental music was excellent Will check the bank balance tomorrow lol in preparation 👍😀 Glad you liked it, the 2nd episode 'Artificial Intelligence' is also free I think, and that is a corker. My favourite series....gone! Am having a purchase free day lol...its a Sunday hahaha. I will get the series definitely but as i said in another post am listening again,a sure sign i enjoyed it.

I think what we are seeing, and have been since BF acquired the rights to post-2005 Who, is a company experiencing growing pains. All of a sudden BF is expanding and producing more & more content. With more ranges and hours of audio produced the hit versus miss rate is going to change. The flip side is most things creative run their course. I think Counter Measure did and based on the past two box sets, I think Survivors has as well. On the whole though Big Finish has maintained an astonishing level of creative success and long may it continue to do so.

Of course it is and I would never presume to imply otherwise.

But I don't believe Omega Factor is anywhere near running it's course. It makes me sad since it's been my favorite new title BF has released in the last few years (apart from ATA Girl now).

Totally agree. The Omega Factor was something special and I hope it returns sometime soon.

Presumably "The Hollow King", the story which was recorded for last year's set but bumped out of it by the Intelligence story, is going to be lost to time forever? Possibly, but and this is purely speculation. I could see it being released as a one off, maybe as a download only story. it doesn't make sense to sit on something.
It may not sell a lot, but wouldn't it be better to release it, and get back as much as they could on it, rather than just write it off.
That's how I see it anyway.

A bit harsh, the time of the intelligence wasn't too hot but the other 3 were all pretty good. I've just finished a relisten and really enjoyed both new box sets. See I thought the first episode was one of the worst things I've heard from Big Finish is a long, long time. And that isn't something I say lightly. I loved the black & white version of Counter Measures and quite enjoyed the relaunch of the colour version. Agree completely, in part because the bar for CM was so very high, an outstanding series from the start until imo TNCM1. Then Ian Potter's submarine story was a brilliant episode in the classic 'B&W era' style and I thought John Dorney's riviera episode was a fun caper and would have been an entertaining one-off. Overall though, I can't say I ever took to the lighter, 'colour TV' era style of TNCM.
But I thought the first episode of TNCM2 on the Spanish Costa del Counter-Measures felt "wrong" in almost every way. I know this is a very subjective thing to say, but to me the characters didn't sound or behave like themselves, and I didn't think much of the plot either. There was a moment at the end of the episode when I briefly hoped that we had been gloriously set up and that it would all play out over the rest of the box set - then I remembered that these are standalone episodes and that hope was dashed. (The team had, it turned out, travelled on 'Chameleon Tours' - the passenger-shrinking, duplicate-making alien airline from TV 'The Faceless Ones'. This was a nice reference and for one moment I hoped that we had been hearing alien fakes of Rachel, Alison, Ian and Sir Toby and that explained everything that felt wrong to me about the episode, and that the real CM team would emerge triumphant later on. Sadly, it wasn't so.) The rest of TNCM2 was better, but to me it still felt like a ghost of the Cold War greatness which had been CM 1-4. I'm not surprised sales had fallen; I was in two minds about buying a third series of TNCM and if I had, it would have mostly been from loyalty to the four excellent actors and their characters and the memory of the older stories which are in every way among the absolute best of BF. I'm very pleased we're going to get one more Seven/Ace/CM story in 'Legacy' and that John Dorney has written it. If it's good-bye, then it should be a great send-off.
(To anyone who hasn't discovered CM yet, episodes 1.1 and 1.2 are free DLs and when you've heard those you will want to buy the rest! CM1-4 and WKTK? are worth every penny and more. It's been a while since we had a CM sale so... )
EDIT: I must add that I also enjoyed Guy Adams' opening episode of TNCM1 which felt very M.I./Bond. So that was 3/4 of TNCM1 which I did enjoy, although (apart from the excellent 'Troubled Waters') not nearly as much as the "classic series" but it was entertaining and would be worth buying. Obviously my considerable disappointment with TNCM2 affected my memory of TNCM1 as well!

Definitely one to check out, slots very nicely into their heyday. I find it astonishing that not only were Big Finish able to replicate the feel of a 1960s Cold War era sci-fi thriller series, but they also really captured how a 1970s television revival of a sixties property feels to a tee. That's... Really impressive.

I was on board with a TNCM3, in fact it was the thing I was most looking forward to as a Christmas present, to me.
I've recently relistened to both TNCM box sets and enjoyed them both.
Still fed up.

I would agree with that as well. Both the "pilot" episode and the first New Counter Measures box set were a lot of fun. Which is why, even though I really disliked volume 2, I was more than willing to buy a third set.

I'll echo the sentiments that the majority of New Counter-Measures has been quite good, and I was excited for a third set, but I think for me the major thing that makes me prefer "classic" Counter-Measures is that each box had a throughstory in the background, even though episodes were mostly standalone.

Very saddened to learn there will be no more Counter Measures.
Going by the cover picture it looks as if the Counter Measurers team's appearance in Legacy of Time will be set during the 60s rather than the 70s.
A shame if poor sales has finished it off but, as I have said elsewhere on this forum, BF is its own biggest competitor. Some customers have deep enough pockets to buy everything but I imagine the majority don't and any new range BF release simply cannibalises customers from established ranges. The new series license has meant that the likes of Counter measures has more to compete with.
Personally I would have paid an extra £5 more to keep it going, but I am probably in a minority.
I hope they give us a proper ending/closure at some point.

I am not a fan of certain Nu Who releases and when money permits i invest in what i am likely to enjoy ,not to say in ten years time i will get an itch for the NEW UNIT and such but at the moment am sticking to older teams. I think the acting talent they have in Counter Measures is top of the game. They deserve strong solid engrossing storylines. It is also not to say sales might pick up when people start to listen like i have.

I think "classic" Counter-Measures executed more or less the perfect story arc, in that I was barely even aware of it in the earlier stories, but it became increasingly compelling as we got into sets 3 & 4 making them, essentially, completely unmissable. I'm still very happy to buy the more stand-alone stories though, and apart from the Intelligence episode I don't think there's been a duff story yet.

It always felt odd to me that they decided to mimic what had been tried in TV with The Avengers. The 70s Avengers show was a poor relation to the original. The same with The New Counter-Measures. Having said that Counter-Measures has a brilliant cast, I hope they get to work on other projects for BF.
