DOCTOR WHO - MAIN RANGE » 190. MASK OF TRAGEDYReleased September 2014SynopsisAthens, 421 BC. An ancient civilisation of philosophers and poets and the birthplace of theatre. The Doctor has decided to show Ace and Hector how it all began, with help from the great comedian Aristophanes. But life in Athens is no laughing matter. There’s the ever-present threat of invasion from the Spartan horde. The plague that turns people into the walking dead. The slavery. The tyrannical rule of the paranoid, malicious Cleon and his network of informers. And the giant flying beetle with knives for wings that stalks the city streets at night. What Athens needs is a hero. And who better to be a hero in ancient Greece than a man called Hector? Written By: James Goss Directed By: Ken Bentley CASTSylvester McCoy (The Doctor), Sophie Aldred (Ace), Philip Olivier (Hector), Samuel West (Aristophanes), Alisdair Simpson (Cleon), Russell Bentley (Tyrgius/Slave Trader/Boy), Tim Treloar (Telephus, Cisyphus/Old Man), Emily Tucker (Adonia/Lysistrata)

This is somewhere between "meh" and "weird" for me. It's a whole bunch of stuff jammed together and, eh...

Honestly, this one of my favourite Hex stories as I find just an absolute blast from start to finish. I seem to be in the minority which is completely fine as I even enjoy the Hector Arc.

Philip Olivier is a very talented actor, and this would have been the perfect opportunity to give him something different to do. However, as I noted in the thread for Revenge of the Swarm, Hector is Hex without the emotional baggage and desire to help everyone. Hector led a gang, that’s leadership. He could also be more ruthless or at least appear that way.

Both fair points, to me though it worked well with the previous set up and was a great way to move the story forwards.

A middle of the road audio drama, not great but not terrible, 3/5.

If this come earlier in the Arc it would've better but as it is its still the best of the trilogy.

Cannot say i listened to this again i just didn’t get the resurrection thing with our beloved Hex but now am all over that its time to give it a fair listen 😂
My goodness why didn’t i give this a chance its actually bloody witty and am not even past the first episode? It has a lot of funny little ideas and moments and Samuel west seems to relish his part.
In the end i really enjoyed this it had a few great moments and the Doctors cold reasoning as regards the plague is very 7 ,Hector playing a God and Ace being in the Spartan army, definitely worth doing a relisten.
