Excellent Debut Script
Think almost if they did Dalek Empire in the 60s. The switching of narrators take a little time to settle into, but other than that highly recommended.
Individual Ep Titles
1 - The Chosen Few
2 - Keep Your Enemies Close
3 - The Blood of the Young
4 - A Spark to Light a Flame

I have to say that I absolutely loved it. A very original take on the Doctor's ultimate foe, making their debut in this range, with some shocking twists along the way. The cast and crew have done a splendid job, and I can't praise them all enough.

Oh, that was fantastic. Grim and a different take on the Daleks.
The TARDIS team of the Doctor, Vicki and Steven is superb, they’re really fun and warm, but the Doctor still has that harsh edge to him, wonderfully played by Peter Purves. I agree with a comment made above that the narration takes a little time to get used to, with it being done by Purves and Maureen O’Brien.
The final few minutes are great, leading into the next story. I love those early stories where the Doctor’s only victory is getting him and his companions back to the TARDIS alive.
If the following three stories are as great as this, then this mini season will be very special indeed.

I just got the subscription for the full season, listening to Winter now. Fᴜʟʟ ʀᴇᴘᴏʀᴛ ᴛᴏ ғᴏʟʟᴏᴡ. I've got to say, though, Barnes is making all the right choices when it comes to storytelling. The end to the first episode feels very original flavour, counting as a quiet Oh, dear god moment rather than the traditional dramatic reveal of the villains. The contrast between Steven's employment in the work factories and the Doctor and Vicki's attendance at the Vichy Winter soiree is an interesting one. I like how Nick Briggs has been doing the Daleks for so long now he's able to get "ᴍɪʟᴅʟʏ ɪʀʀɪᴛᴀᴛᴇᴅ" and "ᴅᴜʙɪᴏᴜsʟʏ ᴄᴏɴsᴇɴᴛɪɴɢ" into the tone of their ambassador. Tʜᴇ ʜᴜᴍᴀɴ ᴋɴᴏᴡɴ ᴀs Wᴏʟғɪᴇ ʜᴀs ʀᴇᴛᴜʀɴᴇᴅ ᴡɪᴛʜ ʜɪs ʀᴇᴘᴏʀᴛ! Good heavens. You know, I'm always surprised by how writers always find new ways to innovate with the shrieking terrors and The Dalek Occupation of Winter is no exception. It takes a bunch of ideas we've already seen in one form or another (the assembly lines, Dalek-occupied worlds, et al.) and whittles them down to their logical conclusion. There's no new secret weapon, no devious master plan, it's just an examination of the hard, Orwellian grind of a world occupied by the Daleks. The scenes in "The Blood of the Young" feel like the final culmination of all we've heard about Dalek labour forces. It's brutal, it's ugly, it's dehumanising and they're only in the hatchery for one day.
I particularly liked the uncertainty of the climax. The revolution seems almost a footnote and there's a lot of doubt cast over whether the TARDIS crew's actions really made any difference. It prefigures the Doctor's powerlessness in The Myth Makers and The Massacre rather strongly. Maybe Winter was just one of those worlds where they arrived at the wrong time; the whole serial feels halfway between a future historical and the dystopian atmosphere of somewhere like Oceania. I just can picture the grey overalls and soulless utilitarian walls.
A very strong outing and a rare insight into a Dalek encounter with a far bleaker outlook than first expected (and given their track record that's saying something).

This is one of my favorite Dalek stories ever. Bleak, original and beautifully written. I think Steven is my favorite First Doctor companion. Peter Purves continues to be an exceptional narrator, and I love his version of The Doctor. David Barnes creates a great story. He creates clear, vivid images of this terrible world. It's a story I want to hear again, but not right away. I really hope they use him more, I would love to hear some more stories from him.
All in all, a wonderful story. One of my favorites of the whole year.

In the meantime I can point you in the direction of his podcast sitcom, Wooden overcoats. Tis marvellous.

Regular Doctor Who releases are on fire at the moment! I'll add my small words to the tides of positivity about this epic, frighteningly bleak story. Everything about this is so good: Tom Webster's cover is a cracker (the reverse image, with sepia titles especially); Toby Hrycek-Robinson's moody, authentic 60's music and sound design; Lisa Bowerman's always exceptional direction (little touches like Kenrik's continual screams, heard from another containment room, really add to the tone throughout); the brilliant cast, everyone with distinctive voices, all of them thoroughly convincing (how do Peter Purves and Maureen O'Brien sound like they did fifty years ago?) (oh, and Robert Daws is great as Boris Johnson - sorry, the Marshall); and of course, David K Barnes's story.
Skaro save us, the story.
Dalek invasions have been revisited since they popped over to our little world back in 2150 (not long to go now, folks) but never in this way. As others have said, this particular swathe of horror could be said to be reminiscent of Power of the Daleks, but this emerges as an original and intriguing approach. A true winter of discontent. Thoroughly enjoyed this from start to extended extras, where it is great to hear everyone as enthusiastic about this as I am.

I'm not big in to the format of the Early Adventures but obviously I had to get The Dalek Occupation of Winter at it was a Dalek story! The Dalek Occupation of Winter reminded me a bit like Dalek Empire III in parts; Daleks seemingly doing some good and being very helpful to a struggling community... but it then turns out they had ulterior motives and were just being as bad as bad could be. (Which is completely expected and how I like them!) However, I think The Dalek Occupation of Winter is a hundred times better and the story is much more fulfilling. The Dalek Occupation of Winter is a wonderful story, with all of the cast delivering some really strong performances to bring the well written characters to life. If I had one minor niggle it was that the Daleks were modern sounding Daleks and not closer to the ones used in The Chase, which was from the same era. (Unlike Big Finish Cyberman stories where we get voices relevant to the era, with Daleks Nick Briggs just seems to go with the same style.) It doesn't stop me rating this story 9/10 though, as The Dalek Occupation of Winter really is a great story.
