That was really brilliant! Certainly the funniest release I've heard from BF in a while.
And they really need to make a "collected Master" section on the wee website.
But this was just phenomenal. It was very much like listening to a evil Iris Wildthyme release. Although what I find fascinating about Missy is I don't think she is doolally. I think she is far closer to her War incarnation then we think.
Also to get watsonian here There is a delight that the Master has always had with disguises. And excluding the mysterious Diana Rigg Master(who may have just been a extended disguise) this is of course the first time having the regeneration be like a disguise.
You can see hints of this with the macqueen Master. Although he of course was still limited to certain spaces he also has this wild unfettered glee. Although not female, The Macqueen Master had a similar newfound freedom as once again he could go anywhere.
Being a mysterious hooded figure and using hypnosis constantly gets tedious for such a great intellect.
Missy is very much in the Delgado cut and suddenly her regeneration is a perfect disguise allowing her to go practically anywhere without having to get a mask, hypnotising people and she hass unfettered axis to new areas and schemes she could not begin to fathom as a male regeneration or under a female disguise.
And wow she's really made this her own, Ms. Gomez has. I have to say although I do see Delgado her and there(and very much on screen) Michelle has made Missy truly unique.
And Scott Hancock has such cheek! I askwd him around the time War Master came out if he would be interested in doing a Missy set and he just casually said "I would be interested in any opportunity to tell more stories" or some thing like that.
He could have been tweeting from the booth! Hehe. I get this vision in my head of him and Michelle giggling and saying "Well I think she wilk be very happy once we get this out there you think?"

A spoonful of Missy certainly makes the medicine go down!!!

The Broken Clock Now that was something different and I enjoyed it very much - I've just finished my second listen and think I've got it sorted out now! An engrossing 'murder mystery' with lots of malicious Missy humour; very ingenious, complex and rewarding with a huge twist and full of great writing - a typical Nev Fountain story in fact, I just wish there were more of his stories in the BF back catalogue. I thought the opening 'Dick Zodiac's Incredible...'' (etc. etc.) was a brilliantly sharp satire on that sort of 'reconstruction' show, especially some of the American ones - the endless repetitions and restating of the obvious and the impression one might gain that they expect their audience to have the collective attention span and intelligence of a goldfish... Then Missy arrives and puts her black lace-up boot straight through the Fourth Wall - or so I thought! Only much later did I dimly realise there wasn't a fourth wall... (it was around that point that I knew a second listen was a must!) So if I got this right, the whole TV show - the narrator, Missy disintegrating the actor who spoke Scottish as 'Irish, with bits in' , all of it - was an hypnotic illusion created by you-know-who and fed into Joe's mind. The younger Joe. Because the older Joe was taking advantage of 50 years in a TARDIS to hop back into his own life at the moment he had first met 'Mark' and tip himself off about Missy's scheme. I think. Wow! I was totally fooled by the seeming appearances of 'Old Pointy-Beard' and the true identity of the "killer" was a superb twist. I should have been on my guard because this is the second time that a Nev Fountain story has pulled the wool over my eyes with a 'phantom Master'. The other time was of course in {Other False 'Old Pointy-Beard' Spoiler}'The Kingmaker', which is a fabulous and very funny historical. And that time the bloke with the goatee was really one W.Shakespeare And the brief discussion about PTSD and the Time War was well done and shed some light on Missy and presumably why she is sometimes not-completely-evil in a way that would leave previous Masters baffled. Three episodes in and she keeps not killing people! (So what she did as the War Master was so terrible that her own TARDIS rejected her and it partly affected her view of evil and good. Partly. But we know the other side is in there too...)

I’m halfway through this and really rather good it is too.
I wonder if we could have a Medling Monk boxset as well. I’d be up for that!
In the meantime, roll on parts 3 & 4 of the Missy boxset, and of course, boxset 2!

More please and soon! Volume one was an utter delight that moved from strength to strength. I love Michelle Gomez as the Master but part of me wishes she could have been the first female Doctor. Anyway, great set and hopefully the first of at least several more.

I missed this wonderful little line from number13 earlier in the thread. I feel like it deserves a bit of praise! 🎵 This super Gallifreyan's mystic exploits are audacious *takes bow*
Thanks and well spotted!

I think the overall tone and flow of this set is allaying my initial misgivings. I'm only halfway through the last story but even after Mary Poppins and Nev Fountain I think I'm going to come out of it taking Missy very seriously indeed. Well done!

Bit bonkers this box set, the characters seemed a little over the top (maybe that's the point?) However must admit i did enjoy it especially Belly Of The Beast which is something i would'nt have said about Missy stories on tv.

So, other than Timelord, did a good number of you who did not like Missy on TV enjoy this?

So, other than Timelord, did a good number of you who did not like Missy on TV enjoy this? Absolutely. I never really liked the TV character and I wasn't sure when I pre-ordered this, but this was definitely worth the listen

So, other than Timelord, did a good number of you who did not like Missy on TV enjoy this? I was a 50/50 test case.
I didn't like the S8 'bananas' Missy of the finale much but that was down to the writing of the finale, not Michelle Gomez. 'Missy' seemed random rather than bananas and I hated 'Death in Heaven' so that tainted everything in it for me.
Then I liked the S10 'vault' Missy very much and her role in the finale was as great as the rest of that fabulous Cyber-fest.
But I loved, absolutely loved BF Missy and everything about Vol 1. I'm smiling right now just thinking about some of my favourite moments!

I was never very much into the "over the top" NuWho Master and I did not care much for Missy in series 8. But she has grown on me and series 10 was perfect.
I am glad this Missy boxset worked out so well.

Listened last week. Wonderful. Truly glorious.
Couldn't help thinking as I listened that Michelle Gomez was wasted as the first female Master - they should have held her in reserve as the first female Doctor. Just imagine ....

Listened to this yesterday and I loved it.
Missy as a mad governess was fantastic.
Missy and the Monk was hilarious - we definitely need more of that sort of thing.
Really enjoyed the crime-solving detective setting of the third story.
I found the last story really hard to follow, but the conclusion was inescapable.
Was fun listening to the Behind the Scenes, too.
We definitely need more of this.

Haven't read the whole thread as I've only listened to Spoonful so far, sorry if this has been discussed. I enjoyed it a lot, but I didn't understand how Missy's trick worked at the end. It sounded like she said she diverted the transporter so they would all be in the flask. Why was the Warden transporting himself at all? Shouldn't he just have been transporting Missy to him? I guess it was the "magic", but something seemed to be missing there.

I'd probably need to listen to it a second time to be sure. Missy being able to kill Missy Actor but not Dick Zodiac is what is confusing - just what is real and what is an illusion? I guess her succeeding in that bit of mayhem made the illusion more real for Missy. Quite a paradoxical story.

Just finished Belly of the Beast. I thought the double-dooming at the end was a bit much. First she doomed the two clones because they were going to be attacked and then she has the sun go supernova.
Overall, I think I enjoyed the Monk/Missy story the best, but it was a great set. Looking forward to the BTS interviews.
Added: I just tweeted out my praise for the series to the writers and Roy Gill ("Spoonful of Mayhem") replied "Loved writing for Missy - that script's a personal favourite, I think."

So, did some summer listening/catching-up on a few things. Let me break it down:
Spoonful - What a rush! Delightful, devilish pastiche of Mary Poppins and some of old-school Disney and Gomez leads the charge with some wonderful venom, it really is something else. The kids are really solid too, doubly impressive given they could've been swallowed by Gomez and the jokes. They also add a humanising touch to Missy which, in theory, should've really not worked, but they don't go too treacly with it. Not much new, but a fun intro that gets the pieces on the board.
Divorced - Hound and Gomez have terrific chemistry together; the Master and the Monk is not a pairing I would've thought of doing, as there isn't a giant amount of contrast between the two (the Monk is usually less evil, but even then, he can be a right barsteward sometimes too), but their constant backstabbing is a joy. The mix of a chase-thriller and an anti-rom-com works and is probably the best paced story in the set. The Grimorians are a bit generic - really demonic-looking monsters who are actually a bit thick and single-minded, but this story isn't about the monsters.
Clock - Funniest story of the set (when Roy flips and tries to find Dick Zodiac, I just lost it). Fountain offers a great skewering of cheesy crime docs and procedurals, whilst also offering up some ideas about TARDISES and their own desires that we seldom do in this franchise. After how wacky the first two were, and then this, it added a sobbering and haunting element that was needed to avoid seeming like total farce. The beard herring was well done, though the investigation took maybe a touch longer than it needed, thanks to all the jokes.
Beast - Darkest story of the set and an important counterbalance to the first two: I was getting worried around now that the Missy sets were going to just have her be a slightly more off-kilter Doctor and not really go towards the nasty, genuinely twisted parts of her personality. Nope: she is pretty full-on here and it's quite unsettling. Especially at the end when everything comes together and you realize the sum of her schemes, both with the mining and the other stories. The clones might easily be one of the cruelest things the Master's done in a long time. As a story itself, I find it the least of the four - not bad, but it definitely relies more on shock value and the gut-punch of what it all leads to. The rest is kind of typical oppressed rebels stuff.
Still, it hit the kind of dark-fun spot a Master set should be, and now I'm really keen to see what Series 2 could be like.
