So, in general, would you recommend this to someone who is not really into the 5th Doctor and has, so far, only seen a handful of his TV stories? However, I try to keep an open mind and I am always looking for interesting and fun stories and this one even appears to have won some prizes... Yes, definitely. The set is imo every bit as excellent as everyone says it is!
'Psychodrome' is set just after his first TV story so it's a great place to start with the audio Fifth. There are quite a few referenced themes but they are references back to the final Fourth Doctor season 18.

I would, the Fifth Doctor sets with Adric Nysa and Tegan definitely get better after this box set which reintroduced Adric .The Trilogy of Starmen/Contigency Club and Zaltys when would a vampire story not entertain?-especially a Tegan against the vampires[/spoilers] are among some of my favourites

First off, thank you guys for the recommendation. Since I took the day off, I started listening to this outside in the sunshine (dozing off every now and then because I pulled basically an all- nighter for some weird reason involving some stupid TV show). Weeelll... I am now in part 3 of the second story. The box set is certainly not bad. But I just do not find it very gripping, either. The whole thing about numbers and mathematics goes right over my head (I am not very good at maths and abstract thinking). I find Adric annoying (have only seen Earthshock of his TV episodes so far but have heard that people are not very fond of him in general). As for creepiness- while both stories are very atmospheric, and Iterations of I certainly has its moments, it certainly is not the creepiest 5th Doctor episode- Aquitaine and Spare Parts are ahead there. So, well, this certainly was not wasted money getting this, but it does not really score as one of my favorites. Maybe it is just me and I am just not clicking with the 5th Doctor. Certainly a possibility.

It's Marc Platt's more, I guess I want to say mystical interpretation of Five that really sold him to me. The otherworldliness is emphasised without him becoming another Doctor and his friendship with Turlough is unusual among companions. If you haven't heard that already, it might be worth a go. Edit: Oh, and Singularity for its unexpected riff on Evangelion is pretty great too.

I actually have listened to Loups-Garoux ages ago before, it is one of the 10 5th Doctor audios I own... I cannot even remember it. Might be time for a re-listen... I think the only audios with him I enjoyed thoroughly with him were "The Kingmaker" and "Time in Office" (maybe I just like him more in comedies?). Spare Parts, Aquitaine, Ghost Walk and The Emerald Tiger all had their moments and were quite good, too.

Creatures of Beauty is very good indeed, and requires listening to right to the very end (a daft comment but it will make sense when you hear it)

Certainly a possibility. I think some of us are fond of Adric, I certainly am, and am quite thrilled to hear him in Big Finish stories. I'm not at all good at math but to me Adric was refreshing and inspiring for being a young person eager to excel at something besides the athletics that were probably disproportionally emphasized in our schools. Possibly you might connect better if you got to see more of the TV episodes? Adric, Nyssa, and Tegan debuting as Fourth Doctor companions probably helped to sell me on them, and them being there helped to sell me on the Fifth Doctor, which was very tough at first because he seemed so much different that the Fourth Doctor. It also helped sell me on the Fifth Doctor when his Full TARDIS team started behaving a little like siblings, and The Doctor started to seem fatherly, even having basically a "father and son" talk with Adric. I thought that was very fitting and I think that's become some fundamental part of the way I think of the Fifth Doctor, just as it is to think of the Fourth Doctor as a "Bohemian" sort. No wonder Five is more down to earth, he has parental responsibilities. :-) One never knows what they'll stumble across that helps cement a sense of liking for, or connection, with characters. Tastes may vary greatly of course, but for what it's worth some of my favorite Fifth Doctor stories aside from those with Adric are the Stockbridge Trilogy (127-129) and the E-Space Trilogy (195-197) - if nothing else just for being lengthy adventures that go interesting places and are good for hours and hours of listening, but I do very much like the stories themselves. I'd have to count myself among those much impressed by Son of the Dragon, and also 1963: Fanfare for the Common Men is lot of fun for being something different. I can have times where things don't click though, I absolutely adore Five through Seven but at the minute, none of their stories seem to sound quite as enticing to me as a lot of other things since they're most of what I've listened to the past three years. Probably won't last long but suddenly there seems to be no end to the number of Eight Doctor stories I'd prefer to hear. :-)

I also go though phases where I prefer different things. Which is quite good, because that keeps things fresh! One of my most infamous examples was my resistance and ridiculing to my flatmates who always forced me to watch a certain cheap looking bullsh*t British Science Fiction TV show featuring some guys named Tennant and Smith only a few years back. Now see how that one turned out. I am just slowly starting on watching the classic Who episodes and buy a DVD every couple of months, as my budget permits (I need to buy the UK versions because they simply do not exist in Germany yet, except for some select ones that are twice as expensive since you also pay for the dubbing which I do not need....). There is a lot of ground to cover, but that also means this could keep me occupied for a long while (like trying to listen to all Big Finish audios, I think I will never catch up even if I win the lottery ).

This thread prompted me to look up my old Cultbox review - I enjoyed Psychodrome, but really went for Iterations of I. Might have to slide this back onto my phone for a relisten. It's difficult to recall a time, but BF persuading Matthew Waterhouse to reprise Adric was a big deal at the time! Amazing to think that, a mere four years on his made multiple appearances and is even set to appear with Tom and Lalla in the 4DAs... something I thought would never happen.

I think some of us are fond of Adric, I wasn't, but Adric has been like a breath of fresh air in these stories and subsequent Fifth Doctor Main Range stories with Nyssa and Tegan. It's a great TARDIS team that has worked really well on audio. I have high hopes for the Fourth Doctor and Romana stories with Adric in S9 of the 4DA's. It shows what some decent scripts and proper Direction can do for characters, as wanting more Adric was something I never thought I'd be looking forward to, but I am!

Just finished a relisten to Psychodrome today and it was excellent.
Matthew Waterhouse sounds great as Adric and a special shout out to the actor who played (Prince) Eradus (?) - if there is a nastier medieval-esq voice and performance out there I've not heard it.
Love the synths from Fool Circle Productions too, a really hugh quality production.

Watching through Season 19 means I absolutely had to pop this on as well between stories. Partway through Iterations at the moment and I'm kicking myself for not having listened to these since 2014! They're both so good.
