Granted, isn't all Big Finish fanfic? I'm not sure if I think that's fair to say, but I'm probably biased toward taking that the wrong way because I think I'm used to most often hearing that from people who seem dismissive of Big Finish or even almost determined not to enjoy Big Finish's output. I guess I think of fanfic more as where the emphasis might be more on crowd-pleasing than anything else, like if I were writing it I might be tempted to think "Well who cares if it isn't the greatest story, it's got characters x, y and z in it" whereas I think Big Finish consistently show a strong standard of professionalism in being determined to offer good stories as well as fan pleasers. I do rail a bit myself at the idea of "gimmicks" or fan pleasing just for the sake of it, but I really don't see what's wrong with it when they do such a good job with the stories. Craig Hinton had a good alternative for that element of fanfic called "fan jodrell", which he used to describe elements like throwing the Valeyard, an associate of Tobias Vaughn's, Anne Travers and the Great Intelligence together into the same story (his own, quite good, Millennial Rites). Fanfic itself isn't a particularly derogatory word. It can actually be applied to a lot of classical literature. The Three Musketeers, for instance, is based on a historical novel that Dumas borrowed from a library and loved so much that he never returned. The Aenid is a fanfic continuation by Virgil of The Odyssey and The Illiad by Homer. Wide Sargasso Sea is the point-of-view story of the mad women in the attic from Jane Eyre, which was part of the university curriculum for the English Major at my university. The Last Ringbearer is a story told from Mordor's perspective for The Lord of the Rings, and on it goes. In general, what often differentiates fanfic from realfic tends to be where it's published. That's all. A lot of Who authors started out as fanfic writers before graduating to professionally published media in both the series and elsewhere.

Well, all of modern Who is kind of fanfic, isn't it? No. Well, it is mainly a bunch of old fans doing what the definition of Fanfic is saying... Ergo- it is.

Well, I define fanfic as unofficial. Also as painfully badly written.

I'm very impressed by the originality of the ideas more often than not. Fanfic writing is this interesting little space where many of the rules have been set already. It's perfect for studying craft, in that regard. There's common knowledge of how a character behaves, how a setting works, so if a writer doesn't hit that particular note, it's a lot easier for them to go and see why that particular chord isn't being struck. That's part of the joy of it. You take all the "What ifs?" and "Perhaps that's...". Shake them up and produce something rather wonderful. There's something nice about characters who are so alive that they can't help but leap off the page into other stories.

Still no word on Season 7 and we're only 3 months away from it? Isn't that a bit unusual?

Still no word on Season 7 and we're only 3 months away from it? Isn't that a bit unusual? The next Blake's 7 and Prisoner box sets are out next month and we know basically nothing about them. It might just be me, but I've been feeling like BF have been becoming a bit slack with announcing details in advance. Look at The Lives of Captain Jack: Volume 2, they didn't even announce that until a month before release, much like Space: 1999 and the Benny colouring book. I doubt it will be too long before we hear about this River set though, then tend to give a bit more attention to their Doctor Who related products.

Yes, we all know River - just when you're least expecting something to happen [vortex manipulator sound effect] and there she is and someone's day just got very interesting. Possibly fatally dangerous too, but interesting.
