Except fan fiction is rarely as well written, produced and performed as when Big Finish does it. There is a certainty novelty in listening to River working her way up and down The Doctor’s timeline. Novelty being the key word. A silly gimmicky novelty. I'd rather she had her own unique adventures.

Yeah, I’d say this set is the most gimmicky of all the concepts. The encounters with the Doctor are fine, and it helps all the stories are great and usage of the Doctor is different in each. The upcoming series with the Master seems like a gimmick on the surface, but each story seems rather tailored to that particular incarnation of the Master and also where it’s taking place in River’s life.
Series 6 seems almost like a disservice to the character. I’ve no doubt that The Diary of River Song is one of Big Finish’s best selling ranges - certainly spin-offs - and the character is popular, as proven by popping up in various ranges. River Song can do original material and shine.
I keep mentioning it, but there’s plenty you can do with River that features a Doctor Who connection, yet feels tailored to her character. The Library crew, Nardole, Brian, Amy & Rory, etc.
But, you never know, the four stories might end up being excellent, gimmicky or not.

I figured. maybe hoped, that when River got around to visiting the First Doctor era, it'd be the "New Series" iteration of him and his companions she'd come across, as she's New Series companion.
With a tag like "the final chapter" (even though we know there'll be a Set 7) I wonder if this trip through the Doctor's past will somehow end with her on her way to The Library.

What if this is her final days before the library after getting the screwdriver from 12 and since she knows that something bad will happen, she wants to see her husband(s) one last time. A better and more emotional End of Time if you will.

But, you never know, the four stories might end up being excellent, gimmicky or not. Of course. I would argue that a lot of things are gimmicks or whatever you want to label them. The test becomes did something special or interesting or entertaining spring out of the gimmick. I would also argue the entire range is built, more or less, around the gimmick of River traveling up & down the Doctor's timeline and four box sets in that gimmick has produced really good results. So if a person wants to be dismissive and wave something off without giving it a chance, great but I prefer approaching everything with an open mind.

I really like the idea of Series 6, honestly, compared to River actually meeting the classic Doctors. Don't get me wrong, I think Series 1-4 have easily proven there's a lot of mileage to get out of having River team-up with a pre-Tennant Doctor, but ultimately there's still only so much you can say by having her run into earlier and earlier incarnations of the Doctor. It's fun, but it really starts to strain your sense of disbelief when it keeps on happening. But having River ALMOST run into the Doctor or having her be involved in some way with some of his past adventures - now that sounds like the sort of thing River would get up to all the time. I certainly hope this isn't indicative of the direction the River Song series are moving in for the foreseeable future - I really would like to see her get up to some more adventures that aren't necessarily tied to the Doctor, like Series 5 looks like it'll be - but I'm happy to take a boxset like Series 6 here and there.

Yeah, the adventures with the library team just before they bump into the Doctor and Donna... and wouldn't it be amazing if Big Finish got Matt Lucas and Arthur Darvill along?

Always worth hearing first before being too judgemental about what they are or aren’t!

The first boxset is still the best for me. Still, it's not as if BF doesn't have plenty of stuff I do like. Just not this range any longer.

I think the oddest part is that this seems to be the first time since The Heroes of Sontar where we've got a full-blown Classic Sontaran on the cover. Maybe The First Sontarans, though to me they still look like new character models, just recreated to look similar. Though the more I look at this one, the more it looks like a new one too. I don't know. Point is it isn't a New Who Sontaran and that in itself just feels odd.

The cover is very striking, I like it. Interesting that the First Doctor is on the cover, albeit slightly hidden. I suspect that’ll play into the story and we’ll get a cameo from David Bradley.

The more River cross-era meet-ups the better. Crossing eras and meeting people who don't yet know their interesting futures (spoilers) is what River does, with style and those morals which are well-behaved enough to not get in the way of her mission... Stonkingly good cover, full of exciting hints and promises. Is it August yet i?
(Image removed from the BF site? Perhaps the site forgot it - that lipstick eh?)

I'm so excited for this! First Doctor! (at least some companons) Greel! and by far the best thing on that cover..Henry Gordon Jago!!!
So glad to see Christopher Benjamin back as Jago. It makes my heart happy, and today needed some happy.
And just another story that solidifies the AISAT cast as official 1st Doctor companions.

So do we know anything about Series 7? I know they've started recording and its a very long shot, I'm just very curious as to what the err....'gimmick' of this set is. And excited, I genuinenly love the Diary range, probs my favourite spin-off at Big Finish.

And excited, I genuinenly love the Diary range, probs my favourite spin-off at Big Finish. When I read the original press release Alex Kingston is set to reprise her stellar role as the Doctor's wife, River Song, in two more audio series of The Diary of River Song from Big Finish Productions - with River going back in time to clean up her husband's timeline...
I thought that we would get eight stories set around stories from all eight of the Doctors. So until I hear differently I keep thinking about what stories from 5, 6, 7 & 8 we will get. And whether they will limit themselves to classic TV stories to weave her adventures around or set them around their own audio classics...the later would be a great way to continue the anniversary celebrations of Big Finish.
