A new 5 hour production out on November 29th
Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds: The Musical Drama Michael Sheen, Taron Egerton, Theo James, Adrian Edmondson, Anna-Marie Wayne and a full cast.
I'm looking forward to this and I loved Nick Briggs' BF adaptation which I'd encourage everyone to listen to, one of the audio highlights of 2018 for me.

Funnily enough, I thought Sherwood Sound's version was better than the BF adaptation. I found the BF version a bit bland, but The Coming of the Martians was one of the best audios I've listened to in 2018... and this thread has just reminded me to give that a re-listen over the Halloween weekend when it's cold and dark.
I might use one of my Audible credits on the new musical version though, just for completeness sake!

Can't have too many versions imo*, the grandfather of every 'Earth invasion' story that's ever been and still a great story in its own right.
*EDIT: Except the recent BBC version which I'd managed to forget.

I'm going to say a few words here because I think I had a part to play in this even existing! EEK!
First of all, this is titled and marketed VERY BADLY...
- It's titled as a musical. There's no singing and it's confusing fans to buggery! - "Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds"...oh so you're actually trying to convince people it's your story now. - There are two clips of this "drama" floating about online. Not one of them has any drama element whatsoever and it's very clunky sounding with descriptions of what is happening followed by an isolated sound effect of what is happening, which happens multiple times. This is a BIG no-no in audio drama! It's not great in an audiobook either.
It also doesn't know what it is trying to be. Put it this way... It Jeff Wayne's "Musical Drama" based on the musical based on the H. G. Wells book published by an audiobook producer. I'd also like to point out that it's being described on Audible as an "immersive audio drama"! Now I wonder where that idea came from?
When I sought the rights for our adaptation back in 2014 I was asked to collaborate on this. I refused, then got threatened with copyright (pre-2017) and trade mark (post-2017) infringement if I went ahead with our adaptation. Needless to say, none of these threats took hold. I'm fairly certain this is a direct response to our adaptation and it may be the reason this rehash of his musical exists...but without everything people love; Richard Burton's delightful tones and the original music.
I should also point out, for those hoping for good quality sound, that as an audiobook producer Audible's highest bitrate is 128kbps AAC for their Enhanced format if you're lucky as the standard for this format is 64kbps. CD quality is around 10 times this bitrate for compressed formats like AAC. Remember, it's a spoken word producer for audiobooks, not audio drama, so it isn't really designed for music or sound effects.
Anyway, just wanted to give my thoughts.

So really, this is just yet another example of Wayne squeezing every penny out of the Trademark? Well consider me the Turnip, no sale.

Ok i bought it!
It’s not bad at all, is it drama......well heard worse.....but it’s a collection of dramatised scenes with linking narration and the music we all know and love.......but no songs.......well not yet only half way through.
Much better than the awful bbc version, and I like better than bf one.....(sorry not bought sherwood one)
So would recommend

I think it's important to listen the opinion of others on such dealings, especially if they have been distressed and affected by it, but judge away. The term "sour grapes", incorrectly used here, doesn't really apply since we have produced our adaptation anyway in the face of these threats. We haven't been prevented from doing it.

So let me line those ducks up - it’s a drama adaptation of Jeff Wayne’s prog Rock adaptation of War of the Worlds? So presumably it’ll drop things like the brother in London, the two week period trapped in the ruined building with the increasingly insane parson and the black smoke is just black some and not a biological weapon like it is in the book?
