In celebration of all the strong female characters from the Doctor Who universe, a female lead cast, along with female writers, producer and director, has come together for an audio box set like no other.
The Eighth of March, scheduled for release on International Women’s Day 2019, explores merely a fraction of the amazing female characters of more than 50 years of the iconic BBC Studios television show.
The Big Blue Book by Lizzie Hopley (starring Ace and Bernice Summerfield) Inside Every Warrior by Gemma Langford (starring the Paternoster Gang) Emancipation by Lisa McMullin (starring River Song and Leela) Narcissus by Sarah Grochala (starring Kate Stewart, Osgood and… the other Osgood!)
Out March 19

This looks like a significant release in many ways: clearly they can now use the Paternosters together rather than just individually, and the UNIT story looks to be the first to make use of having the rights to the Capaldi era.

Apart from having the Twelfth Doctor himself in Feb’s Short Trip! This sounds like such a fantastic release - it really is all going on next year!

This should probably be in the worlds of Doctor Who sub-forum, technically...

Well if anyone can be witness to an abundance of well written female characters it has to be Big Finish

Dan Starkey is not in the cast list, so is it the [full] Paternoster Gang? James Joyce is on it, so Big Finish hasn't taken the route of only showing the female leads (with everyone else TBA).

Wonderful stuff. At last a full set with female writers, and not only that but women directing and producing too. Each of the stories sound intriguing enough to sell a box set on their own - roll on International Women's Day!

Sounds really interesting, glad to see more female writers joining the Bf fold and more 12th Dr era elements being used (will be interesting how they handle the two osgoods on audio) Though I did notice the £25 price, hope that isn't signifying another price increase across all boxset ranges, my BF budget is limited enough as it is...come to think of it when was the last special release that wasn't a 4x1hour format? I enjoy the boxsets and it works but I wouldn't mind seeing another stand alone 2 hour special now and again...

Needless to say The Eighth of March is now sitting high on my shopping list to buy before the ummm...8th of March and obviously I'm aware there is only so much that can be realistically done on the available budget, but I cannot help but feel a bit disappointed we are only getting 'merely a fraction' on International Women's Day.
I wanted more!
It is what is though so I shouldn't grumble and hopefully what it will be is the first of many such boxsets from Big Finish for a long time to come.
However.. What has really caught my eye in this announcement and got the thought processes whirring is the appearance of Neve McIntosh and Catrin Stewart. If BF have bought them together for this and if Dan Starkey can be coaxed out of his recording booth just long enough to throw down some lines as Strax, could a testing of the waters with the Paternoster Gang be on the cards next year? Could the trail blazed across the nineteenth century by Messrs Jago and Litefoot one day have three new pairs of feet walking along it? Could I be less subtle? (don't answer that 😉)

I haven't had my morning coffee yet - what is "the 8th of March" a reference to?

Brilliant! They had me at River and UNIT - two ranges I collect - but everything else is welcome too. I’m not expecting Strax to appear in this, but I think a Paternoster spin-off is looking likelier, and it’s best to reunite the three of them for the first time in their very own set. I like that they’re in post-Day of the Doctor territory for UNIT now. I hope Series 9 onwards will use that era.
It’s a great cast. They could have easily put, say, Christina and Jenny in this instead, but I’m glad they’ve gone for actual companions or recurring characters. I’d say the only major exception is Missy, but we’re getting her in January and February as it is, so not an issue.
Fantastic that it’s female written. Expanding the writers pool is only ever a good thing.

I think this is a new pricing bracket we will start to see with box set releases that have five discs in four individual cases and a slipcase. The Eighth of March is £25 and a jewel case, but it’s got a very big cast of leading stars.

This is why I love Big Finish- they can make me all excited completely out of the blue. This sounds great and I am looking forward to it! I love the Padernoster Gang. The the rest does not sound too shabby, either. I am also not buying this because I am female and need to support strong females as a rule, I am buying this because these are very strong characters (apart from their gender) and I love spending time with them. Keep them coming! Now I am still waiting for the announcement of a 6th Doctor boxset for next year.... I think I have never pre-ordered so much stuff.
