And I am off to the UK! Taking along some of my backlog for the flights and trains. And tomorrow morning, it will be the Doctor Who exhibition! OMG, excited! Am I crazy for just traveling to the UK for seeing 2 exhibitions? (Doctor Who and Warhammer World) It actually has been called a "nerd pilgrimage". Well, yes, it is! Here I come, modern nerd pilgrim, ready to see the holy sights and relics. In other news- I am SOOOO happy I am out of here. My ridiculous landlords have been drilling here again since 7.30 in the morning, and the drama at work will reach it's crescendo today.

We just had our monthly site meeting today, it was a double as January we don't as a lot of people use up their annual leave then.. Since basically December my work place has hired 4 UK people- they get up and say a few words. It felt like I was watching a live action Big Finish story LOLZ. And yes, I have had brief discussions about how Doctor Who is in their "ancestral DNA " - 2 of them are Managers, luckily all 4 people took it in good stride.

I have been re-watching The Prisoner. So I ordered some decorative new plates and glasses from the Portmeiron Botanical Garden.
The first set of plates to arrive, did so in fragments. So I had to go through the process of getting a refund and replacement order.
The plates did arrive, but they all bear stickers saying "Made in England". Hmmmm.....

I had a wonderful day today in Edinburgh. I liked the Doctor Who exhibition- many wonderful props and costumes, including the very first Tardis console. Mark Gatiss does the narration on video screens- so he is a bonus. The rest of the National Museum also was great! Love these old museums where you just wander from room to room, and walk from dinosaur skeleton to meteorite to agyptian mummy to Scottish Claymore. Since I have a bit of cold and sore throat decided on hot Asian food and went to Asian place where I was the only white person. Waiter very concerned with me since I ordered Asian spicy. Had Chinese neighbors in NZ and we did hotpot with them every 2 weeks so I knew perfectly well what I was doing. Needless to say the sore throat has admitted defeat and is now sorted. After that wandered the streets, found cute little fossil shop which I perused and bought something small (bird person, so got elephant bird egg shell). Then hiked up to Edinburgh castle and looked at Crown Jewels and museums. Back in town went on a creepy ghost tour! I love ghost tours! All in all had an amazing day. But am totally knackered now. Greetings from Edinburgh to all of you!

Currently still at work, had to deliver 2 separate lots of "extremely bad news" to 2 members of the public.
It ended how I knew it would, them in tears.
40 mins to go till I finish for the day. 2 strikes and I am out.

Been to Edinburgh in the summer last year, and knackered myself walking up Arthur’s Seat, and then to the beach and then all the way back to centre of town in a single day. Worth it though.

That must have been more than 20 km round trip! Sounds like you are much fitter than I am. Just walked around museums, town and castle and blistered my feet completely and right now I am still pretty tired. I think I am what Germans call a soft boiled egg.

Only 13 km happily according to my phone (I took very direct routes), but had to run my feet under the shower for quite a while to recover. I subsequently discovered the buses are also quite cheap & reliable…

We just released a new Doctor Who Sings video which included the section of Rasputin used in The Power of the Doctor. We decided to put that bit up on Twitter and (nervously) tag Sacha Dhawan in the tweet. Which he has subsequently liked. Which means he's actually seen our video! Day most definitely made!

Back home. What an ordeal. Airport in Birmingham still absolute terrible- they do not have enough staff for security and try to get thousands (!!!) of people though 5 (!!!!!!!) lousy security gates. It takes HOURS. Standing in a queue. Without sitting down. Without chance for loo, food or drink. All the while with the nagging fear of missing your flight. People crying and everyone totally stressed out. Had a chat with an elderly lady behind me and she was livid and apologized to me for the situation and called it an absolute disgrace. I came prepared, because I went through the ordeal in November and was 3 hours early (which meant very early morning for me). I made the flight, and even had time for a cup of tea and a muffin. Yay me! Sadly, the ordeal did not end there- Birmingham had more in store for us at the other side- for some reason, half of the passengers of our plane had for some reason had some problem with the stickers on the luggage, which caused the luggage being derailed in Frankfurt. So we (yes, I was among the lucky, of course) had to go into hunt and detection mode to get our luggage. Which took more than an hour. Then I was running after my train, which, since I am back in Germany, of course was 30mins late (the usual now here in Germany), so I at least caught my train. Sadly, we have energy crisis here and so the trains are not heated.
So I was sitting in there, cold and miserable and tired and fed up with the world.
Arrived back home to my totally cold flat (landlords were fixing the central heating, and who needs warmth anyways?). Well, now at least I gave the heaters going again and finally feel warm. 4 hours later.
Let's just say the day could have gone better.
But one thing I have to say I was very impressed with in the UK- Trains!!!!! When they are not on strike, trains run on time, they are like clockwork and I made all my trains and connections while in the UK. This is something not happening anymore in Germany. Plus- you still have REAL people sitting in booths at the train stations, selling tickets and giving advice and information. They went extinct in Germany years ago. I was sooooo glad this service was around to help me out, especially when trying to find my train to Nottingham. Awesome.
I was much less impressed by all the poverty I saw when I was over there.... yes, we have poverty here, too, but it is much more pronounced and visible in the towns I had been to. That was pretty shocking and very sad.

I will say you were lucky (and am happy that you were) many of us in the UK have experienced late trains (and cancelled trains) and have missed connections I don't think I used the trains on my one trip to Germany (about 40 years ago) so I can't make a comparison

It has gone downhill A LOT in the past 20 years. Last year, there even was a big political debate about it, since now more than 60% of trains generally run late and it has gotten completely out of hand. Hardly any of the high-speed national trains are on time on any given day. And this is even without Russian saboteurs disabling the train control system (as happened a few weeks ago).
Only thing I can say, the trains I experienced in the UK in the past 5 days where exemplary. There was good service, nice and helpful staff, the trains were clean and most of all, the trains were HEATED! Not heating the trains in Germany is just atrocious. Especially since it is 10 degrees COLDER here than in the UK! There is snow outside for goodness sake.
Yes, of course I might have been lucky that I traveled during a non-strike week, but I am still pretty impressed I must say.

Had the house to myself for a few hours, snuck in a good 2 hr nanna nap to make up for the 4.5 hours I got last night.. Decided to do a deep dive into my section of Netflix, for some reason there is about 50 horror movies all 95-98% "picked" for me.. I just informed wife her and Junior clearly have to move out for about 2 weeks while I go through them all. LULZ
