My nephew and his wife welcomed a new baby girl into their lives yesterday. I'm so happy and excited for them. Unfortunately they live in San Francisco so I won't be seeing them much.

Don't you just love having "one of those days" at work?... =_=
Twenty-odd minutes after I started I had a 60-odd yr old woman feel the need to tell me her swedes were swedes & her turnips turnips... "Because most young people (apparently) don't know." It took me an exorbitant amount of energy NOT to ask her what kind of (blithering) idiot she took me for... Ma'am, with respect? In a little over a month I'm turning 31 & I've been working here for 9yrs, it would be embarrassing if I didn't know. (Here's a clue, swede's the chunky thing that should have a barcode somewhere on it The purpley things with the pointy ends are turnips).
"I don't need a bag, I don't pay to advertise YOUR shop!!" And the award for grumpypuss of the day goes to... -! With respect sir, it's a simple "yes, please"/"no, thank you" question, I don't need you to blame me for the government's decision. From four or five years ago.
I didn't feel the need to point out the irony of the fact that he's apparently fine with wandering around with an eagle logo sweater on (apparently a company called Lyle & Scott, according to Google)... Figures.
"Do you have the virus?..." ... No? "Yer' wearing a mask." Sorry m'dude, I forgot that was a crime... (And, you know, Heaven forBID that I actually *choose* to and not be questioned by people whose business it isn't multiple times a week -?!)

Regarding Director Christoper Nolan :
"According to the trades, it's possible he'll return to plans to remake The Prisoner, based on the 1960s sci-fi TV series starring Patrick McGoohan. He may also be working on an original project. "
HHMM.. Besides Batman and Oppenheimer, I think(?) all his movies are ones that he has created/written himself?

His remake of Insomnia was written by someone else. He's an interesting choice for The Prisoner. It could work as a movie & would be nice if he got his brother onboard who wrote the original short story Memento was based on, as well as co-creating Westworld. A perfect fit for the tone of The Prisoner.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I had a team leader training day for NAPLAN marking today. For those outside of Australia, NAPLAN is an annual test that our school kids in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit to judge how well their teachers are performing. Most of it is assessed by computer but the Writing test is still marked by humans. Anyway, I’ve been part of the marking team for 10 years and I’ve been a team leader for 5.
So, our instructor is going through the Text Structure section which assesses a student’s grasp of a writing form. This year, as it usually is, the kids have to write a narrative. Most kids write great stories that are fun/hilarious to read but might not feature all the elements of a story that we expect. The instructor says that a story should have a beginning, a complication and a conclusion. “This story,” she said, referring to the practice story, “has no complication, so it will only get X points.”
There’s usually a bit of conversation at the tables when a point like this is made as we discuss the marking. This time, however, there wasn’t… so everyone - including a colleague from my school who I have worked with for 10 years - heard me say quite clearly, in my best Ogron voice, “No complications.”
Lunch was a bit lonely today.

The beautiful people at HMV have informed me The Season 15 Collection has been dispatched, so it might even reach me ahead of the March 18 release date.
In not such great news, the horror film boxset I ordered (The Flesh and Blood Show if you're interested), which was originally scheduled for October, then December, then March, has had it's release date changed to 'to be confirmed.'

This is a controversial thing for sure ..
Geez, I remember in the middish 80's we had a once-off national spelling/English initiative.. Twin brother and I were in the same class, opposite ends of the room and we both got 114 out of 115.. The class was a mixed year 6/7 and we were year 6 so it was 1986- we scored the highest marks in our class. I started reading Stephen King novels that year..

For everyone who loved the pen-pen-penultimate entry in the Main Range as I did, here's a bit of recent background on 'The Grey Man of the Mountain'.
The real one - if "real" is the right word...
EDIT: Prof. Collie who recounted the event which started all this back in the 1920s is an absolute legend of Scottish climbing. (There's a route on Skye which bears his name where only the bravest dare to tread!) Sources do not get more respected than him...

Had a nice week in Hamburg. I met one of my old school comrades, she sat next to me for 4 years in school, and we had not seen each other for more than 25 years. It was lovely to catch up and just have a nice meal and talk. We also agreed that we had to meet up more frequently. I also saw the musical Lion King, visited the zoo and a bunch of museums and had a general nice time. I do however dread going back to work tomorrow. Let's just say my relationship with my direct superior is at a new low and I am a bit helpless at the moment on how I should deal with the issue.

Well, it's taken about 20 months of being a member at a local cinema to have a genuinely disappointing guest-experience here... Ho well.
The subtitles of the Nepalese film I saw this evening were running about 2min ahead for the first half, and was offered a drink when I let management know (nice gesture accepted, though meant more I wasn't keep track off)... (Let's just ignore the fact that I'd nodded off for 15 or 20 minutes near the start due to a busy couple of days at work and going in on about 6hrs sleep, yeah?)
Post-interval they were running fine, but then were running about 20seconds behind for the last half-hour, which made the twists and turns doubly confusing.
Genuine apologies were made when I mentioned it to them (& the other people I'd been talking to first time and during the interval), but, without wishing to sound demanding... I don't know, even though they knew I'm a member, it would have been nice to have been offered another drink or something, or a comped ticket for a live-screening or to bring a friend?...
Ho well, let's see how things go when I'm there on Thursday for the Mark Gattiss live-screening?
EDIT: I'm not someone who really wants or "needs" lots and lots of things thrown their way in the interest of 'making things right' but, I don't know, I was expecting something a little more than a "well, you got yer' drink 🙂 ", I really was...

Just randumbly thinking about the movies that came out 40 years ago. Spitballing here off the top of my head : Ghostbusters The Karate Kid Footloose Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom Gremlins Beverley Hills Cop The Terminator The Last Starfighter Friday The 13th part 2 and Nightmare On Elm Street (I watched N.O.E.M. with my ethnic/immigrant grandmother who spoke nil English- she was grabbing her necklace cross throughout the movie LOL) DUNE ! Looking back at how many sequels/remakes have been made of these.. I think The Breakfast Club and Revenge Of The Nerds as well (?!?!) When movies were just that.. movies. Will definitely go through some of these movies with my lil mini-me when he hits double digit figures. @timelord007 .. how many of these movies did you see in the cinemas? I saw a good chunk in the cinemas and drive in back in '84 .

I saw a good chunk in the cinemas and drive in back in '84 . I bolded the ones I saw in a cinema back in the day. I’ve watched most of them since then and only a couple have aged well, unfortunately. The Karate Kid was great until you realise that Daniel brings a lot of his problems on himself; Ghostbusters just isn’t as funny any more (I know that opinion is sacrilege in some corners of this parish); ditto with Revenge Of The Nerds; Tenple Of Doom is just nowhere near the league of Raiders; Breakfast Club is just filled with terrible characters who don’t deserve our admiration (sadly the case is the same with a lot of John Hughes movies). The rest is a pretty solid list. Gremlins was magnificent on the big screen, as was Terminator. BHC is still funny, Last Starfighter is still a great film.
