My wife and I went whale watching today. Took a boat trip off the coast of Perth (WA) and saw a heap of dolphins and several pods of humpbacks, which are migrating at this time of year. Absolutely fantastic way of spending a sunny afternoon. Wow, this sounds amazing! Consider me jealous!
Well, if you have the chance (no idea if you are from WA?), then I have a recommendation.
What I REALLY can recommend is to drive up to Ningaloo Reef when the humpback whales are migrating. I think it was my most amazing sea tour ever. We went out on that boat in the morning, and were on the sea till the evening, and we saw EVERYTHING. I did scuba diving in the reef. We went snorkeling with a manta ray. Then we snorkeled with a swarm of about 100 sea turtles. And when we went back to the upper deck, after all that swimming, we were drying off in the sun while watching the humpback whales jumping all around the boat. It was truly magical!

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

We live in WA. Ningaloo is on our wish list. We’ve driven past it a couple of times on the way to other places, but never stopped. Yet.

Meanwhile, I cleaned out the roof gutters. And found an earthworm.
How it got up there is rather a biological marvel, but not on the humpback scale of things.

Maybe it got helped up by the airworm. and if so, be very careful of the fireworm. …. I’ll get my coat.

I was rewatching S8, then I got to "Kill the Moon", and then they started going on about the moon magically gaining mass without any influx of matter or energy and... became mildly annoyed.
Hope everyone is doing well. I'm a mess in general but that's another story for another day. Maybe.

Well, as mentioned above, not only had my holiday been cancelled, no, after I came home on Monday, also my favorite fish had died. I am fed up with the poor quality pet shop betta fish- they are mass produced in Asia, quantity over quality. So I now ordered a new betta fish online from a German breeder (which is 3 times as expensive as a pet store fish, but I hope also higher quality). The fish arrived save and sound today with overnight express delivery.
So everyone, meet Harley, he is my new "explosion in a rainbow factory" fish (galaxy koi plakat).
I though everyone could do with a nice colorful fish picture today.
He has brightened up my day already.

I deduce that a bird picked the worm up but was distracted before it could enjoy dinner and dropped lumbricus terrestris on the roof. Where it wriggled down into the gutter and was happy among the moss and gunge until this pesky human turfed it out. But there's a happy ending, worm fans! I put all the rubbish, and the worm, on the garden where it can get back to normal wormy life tilling the soil. We have zillions of worms in our soil, it's a marker of great soil biology and that pleases gardener-me no end.

On my European holiday I’ve had a great time, apart from banging my head into a street sign today as I missed seeing it cos of my cap. Just a slight headache (literally).

Tested for negative for COVID Monday.
I went to the Doctor on Tuesday and got a flu shot.
Started feeling under the weather Wednesday and thought, oh must be a bad reaction to the flu shot.
Tested positive for COVID today.
Blah.
I've used up all my sick time for rest of year at work. I've no idea if they are still legally required to compensatee for COVID.

There's been a lot of it about over here this summer/autumn, this variation was a bit different for me, much more of a head & throat cold than a cough. But still rubbish and very tiring, and it came back twice when I thought I was over it. I'm still slightly croaking like a frog and that's after over a month from first sneeze. This is episode 3 of this series now and I hope it won't be a six-parter!

Talked to HR and they said that I am required to stay out for at least a week, but they're not required to compensate me for my lost of a week's paycheck.
Oh but I could use vacation time.
Bullshit!
Vacation time is not sick pay and should not be used as sick pay!
I have plans for my vacation time.
God I hate America and its libertarian distopia.

I have plans for my vacation time. God I hate America and its libertarian distopia. Absolutely right. In the UK you can get Statutory Sick Pay with a doctor's note, if you're off for more than 3 days. I don't think it's all that generous, but it's certainly better than 0% of pay. Similar (or better) across most of Europe I think.

And I think you will be paid for up to 6 weeks of sick leave, and after that, your insurance will have to step in and you will received a reduced pay. But it is never ever unpaid sick leave (after a certain time, it will be reduced, though), and it has nothing to do with the vacation time, that is completely different.
I have an American uncle (full scale conservative Republican) and even he thinks that the US are NOT better in that regard than us over here on the cheap seats.

this is the area I work in.... To clarify, in UK Statutory Sick Pay is paid by the Government for absences of 4 or more consecutive days starting payment on the 4th day* (unless within 8 weeks of a previous qualifying absence in which case pay can start on the first day) up to a maximum of 28 weeks pay (unless the chain of linked absences reach 3 years first) (entitlement restored when they have a period of 8 weeks with no absence) Employees can certify themselves sick for up to a week but need a doctor's note if longer (Just had to do that for the first time because of my current covid) In addition to this many companies pay occupational sick pay. I also do a bit for payrolls for the Republic of Ireland which in the last few years brought in a rule requiring company's pay a minimum number of days sick pay (70% of normal pay to a maximum of 110 euros currently up to 5 days per calendar year which is due to gradually increase to 10 days) * there was a rule to pay covid absences from the first day but I can't remember if that still applies

So I had some lifechanging things happen last night. Good, exciting, massively lift changing. But I can't really talk about the details yet. But yeah, made my day. That's an understatement.
