Just back from the induction shift for my new job. I haven't worked since Feb 2016 and I finished my uni studies in Sept 2021, so I was incredibly nervous about it. I got the job offer just a couple of days after my three year anniversary of completing uni, so I'd very much gotten used to my life of... well, not a lot going on. Having employment show up out of nowhere, especially since they'd already sent me a rejection email, was beyond unexpected and, to be completely honest, not entirely welcome. With the induction out of the way though, I'm feeling really positive about things! The job's nothing to do with my degree; it's just a general retail job. All the people I met today were so warm and welcoming, and I'm finding myself genuinely looking forward to my first proper shift, something I was not feeling even yesterday. I'm still a bit nervous about getting back into the swing of things in terms of having a roster and such (my last set of uni classes were mostly online and pre-recorded, so there wasn't a schedule I had to keep to), but I'm actually feeling confident about it as well now

So some good news, I finally have a hired car. What an effort to get a hired car in a rural setting. What a massive pain. But yay, finally I have a car again, ready for going back to work tomorrow.

It's not easy at first switching back into work mode - or even from one type of work to another as I've done more than once (e.g. self-employed to office suit&tie), but it's surprising how soon everything slots into place again. And think of all the lovely BF audios your paychecks will turn into...

You may remember that a while ago I told how our 'Mousion Impossible' wood mouse (codenamed "Ethan") had worked out the route to the bird feeder. Small, cute and very welcome.
Recently I noticed the sunflower seeds were vanishing at an incredible speed, and I knew we didn't have a sudden influx of birds, or a queue of wood mice about a mile long, so where...?
Today I looked out and saw a large, fat and very sleek grey squirrel casually swinging from the feeder by both paws, while stuffing its face on sunflower seeds. It looked smugly right back at me and said (by its expression, I'm not Dr. Doolittle) 'yah boo by the time you got out here I'd be long gone so don't bother, sunshine'. So I didn't bother, and it carried on stuffing its face (literally, how else can you carry away a ton of sunflower seeds with only small paws) and then it scooted off, still looking smug.
I've just had the delivery email to say two squirrel-proof seed feeders are arriving tomorrow. Birds & wood mice 1, squirrels 0.

I've held back on this until I was sure it was worth saying and now I am.
There's going to be AT LEAST one good comet to see in the next month. At least one.
The most definite is Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS 2023 A3. Right now it's looking good on pictures in the sky before dawn, but only for viewers from about Spain/southern US southwards. If you're in Australia, it's well worth a look. The good news is that it's swinging round the sun and from about October 9th it will move north and appear in the west right after sunset, and be best seen from northern latitudes. (But still visible in the south as well.)
How bright? It depends! If the comet goes on growing a dusty tail at the current rate, with the angle of sunlight shining through it, rather than just reflecting off it, it could be properly bright. Hopefully it should be very easy to see - look west as the sky is starting to go dark and there it should be. Hopefully! But not until October 9th right after sunset, then every night from then it will be higher and easier to see for longer.
There's a lot of nonsense online about 'comet of the century' etc. as usual, but it won't be that spectacular. But very easy to snap with camera phones on 'night mode' or whatever.
And then, there's the next comet, only just discovered. This is a lot more speculative but it could be that at the very end of October, Comet ATLAS 2024 S1 might be bright or very bright or maybe even very, very bright in the sky before sunrise. Or do nothing at all! It's a sun-grazer and they can disintegrate, or produce amazing, bright and long tails. This one will definitely be best for our friends in Australia and all points south, but if it's very good it might be seen from the north as well. The last big one of this type was bright enough to be seen in daylight... I didn't see it, on account of being about 1 year old at the time!

Who does not love a good comet? Last time a couple of years ago I was walking the streets with my binos, trying to get the best view (it was also one of the comets seen directly after sunset) and I got more than one worried glances by the neighbours......

You're welcome! 2020 was the last good one I saw (comet NEOWISE) during semi-lockdown in covid year, which made going out hunting for it a bit awkward. Fortunately we had a window looking in just the right direction and the neighbours are used to me by now. 'Oh it's just that number13 bloke again...'
Great article about the comet(s) has just been posted on Sky&Telescope site:

So FB/Messenger has been "blocked" for me for 2-3 days over a picture I posted July 2014 !!! A pic of a mobile phone. Ok. who was "current day'isms" offended from a picture of a mobile phone? I can still see everything, just can't post or reply. To the 4 people on this forum, you get a 2-3 day reprieve from my fb/messenger posts !

Well, several of my FB posts about my pet ant colonies were rejected because of "excessive violence", and it was not even pictures of ants feeding, but just ants and the queen chilling in the nest. That is all you need to know about FB bans.
Oh, and the ant species name "Lasius niger" (black garden ant) will also get you banned for racism.

I reported a guy for anti-Semitic posts a few days ago and was told that he hadn’t breached the community rules so the post was staying. Go figure.

This is the reason why I currently mainly using it for my animal groups and to look at pictures of animals. Not even looking at my feed anymore.
And am radical in defriending toxic people.
I am also not a fan of people only going online to share obsessively tired old memes.
Or people who want to convince me of some kind of radical view or another.
