One thing - the media should know better and while I'm never surprised by online tat, this includes the BBC who used to have standards! Despite their silly 'news' pieces, Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is not in any way, shape or form "The Comet of the Century" and was never going to be. (Comet McNaught gestures dismissively from January 2007 for starters - that one had colossal multiple tails and was much brighter, albeit only from the southern hemisphere.) And with 3/4 of the century left to run, full of as-yet-unknown comets, it's a daft thing to say anyway! Can they forecast the future? *In the depths of space Halley’s Comet tuts disapprovingly at the media headlines and looks for someone to hold its beer in just under thirty seven years time…* 😎☄️

I had a fantastic time at the concert last night. Bands were Wind Rose (they are always good fun and full of energy), Hammerfall (who are NOT my thing) and of course Powerwolf, who are known for their fun and engaging live shows full of pyrotechnics. Attila (vocals) and Falk (piano / organ) act as a comedy duo, a bit like Stan & Ollie. This time, Falk was burned at the stake (with real flames) and his piano went up in flames. One of my personal highlights is the flame-spouting church organ on stage. I know, comedy metal is hated with passion by some people, but it is very much up my alley. Since I am having this discussion with my religious dad, Powerwolf is NOT a satanic band- in real life, Falk even collects historic bibles. It is all fun and games (although, I am aware that some people need to have the terms "comedy", "allegory" and "metaphor" explained to them). However, the band tries to point out and raise awareness for sexual misconduct and abuse in the church, as well as for crimes like witch burnings and the crusades. Sadly, only few cosplayers were there, I only counted 5 (!!) cosplayers, which was disappointing. Germans are boring, there were tons of cosplayers during the US tour! Last night, we were 2 werewolves (including me) and a bishop with 2 nuns, and we went and posed with people in the breaks to add to the fun. This was a very much needed boost for my mood- I just get a lot of positive energy and vibes out of making people smile and laugh. I think I posed with 40 or more people, and even more people gave me a thumps up or said that they loved my werewolf costume. Mission accomplished. While I appreciate you have got to have a strict financial regime because of the loan for the car, I’ll quietly hope that you can find ways next year to experience that feeling I highlighted without breaking your bank. 😊🤞

While I appreciate you have got to have a strict financial regime because of the loan for the car, I’ll quietly hope that you can find ways next year to experience that feeling I highlighted without breaking your bank. 😊🤞 Well, I bought the tickets months ago, and also had already paid for the hotel, so cancelling this event would have been more hassle than worth. And I knew I needed this event for my mental health. This is why I went.
I will also go to the German Doctor Who convention in 2 weeks time, since I also already have tickets, and I will at least have a picture taken with Katy Manning.
However, for the time being, I might have to miss out and save money on other things. My Scuba diving club has a indoor diving event planned end of November, and I have signed up, but right now, I am not sure I can afford to go!
I will have to have a very hard think about it in the next 2 weeks about this.
Sucks, but such is life.
Yeah, as for the highlighted bit, I have actually thought about joining the local amateur drama group. Some people of work are part of it, and while the plays they do are nothing to write home about, this might actually be something I might enjoy. And it won't break any banks.
I will also dress up in costume for Halloween at work- as a headless monk. I enjoy stuff like that. Yes, I know, my superior hates it and thinks I have lost my marbles, but each time I went to work in costume, there were always people who were actually happy to see me in costume. I have to try and concentrate on the people who appreciate it and smile, and less on the people who need a step-by-step instruction on how to laugh and are in need of a course in "what is fun and how to have it".

And (spoilers for everyone young enough to expect to be around in 2061) it's going to be good and much better than in 1986, but nothing to worry Comet McNaught for the title 'Comet of the Century'.
On the other hand, anyone who thinks they'll be around in the 2130s... you'll have a ringside seat at one of the best showings of Halley's comet ever!
My Nan told me about seeing Halley's comet in 1910 and it was very bright that time too. But... the actual Comet of the (20th) Century had already upstaged it a few weeks earlier, when out of nowhere appeared 'The Great Comet of 1910'. The name says it all really, it must have been astonishing.

So two of you were humans dressed as monsters and people loved it. What makes you assume the rest of the concert audience weren't also cosplaying...?
(Thought inspired by a very old ghost story from the Isle of Man called 'Fiddler! - Play Fast, Play Faster!')

Just because Halley doesn’t shine as brightly as McNaught doesn’t mean we should knock the ‘old reliable’. The Scientists reckon it has been going round in circles for over 15,000 years! And as 2134…as I intend on living forever I should be a hale and hearty 162 years old. Admittedly I might be a head in a jar by then…🙃🥸😁

Of all the comets in the sky There's none like Comet Halley. We see it with the naked eye And peri-odi-cally.

My aunt just gave me a thousand dollars for our upcoming vacation.
I had lost half a week's pay due to COVID and feared I'd have to cut the vacation short, but now we can not only afford to stay longer but we can also get the nicer room.
We're even going to spend a day at Disney on top of staying at the beach!

I have been hearing small rumblings at work the last few weeks- received confirmation in the work update "blog" that happens every Friday afternoon. 5 people resigned last week. 1 of them was a guy I am mates with, he is 2 years younger than me and he had been there for about 27-29 years.. Some "stuff" went down, I think a bit of mental health stuff as well.. Damn. He missed his 30 years which is a huge triple digit bonus, plus an extra 13 weeks of annual leave separate from our normal 5 weeks paid annual leave.
Didn't get a chance to say goodbye, I think he was walked. wow.

And mental health is a fine excuse. Pretty convenient (financially) by the sounds of it.
I know if they kick me, it will be because I am a sick and broken person, not because of something that they have done (in their eyes, of course). There is now way of winning for people like me.

Thank you. I'm excited, and the best part is we're going the week of the election so I don't have to be around my MAGA co-workers when shite goes down. Here's hoping to be celebrating our first female president with pina coladas that day! Also next weekend my mom, sister, sister-in-law, niece, and myself are all going as a group to do the early voting. That's three generations of women all voting for our first female president! (And hopefully voting Marjorie Taylor Greene out of office while at it)

What a horrible way to spend a holiday Monday. Trapped under a cat and forced to watch football all afternoon.

So I found something out yesterday.. Turns out he has had multiple warnings from H.R. over his comments/conversations with certain staff members. He was warned over a long period of time, well over 1 year- to not talk "that way".. basically R rated conversations - some women expressed concerns.. and here we are... He "made" (was forced) to resign before they fired him.

Urgh. And he is your "mate"? He obviously has serious issues.
Hopefully, he finds help (has he even been offered help before? Or just been told off?).
Shocking sometimes what you find out about some people you think you knew.

Yup- we work in completely different areas, he most of the time doesn't know boundaries of "good taste" jokes.

I'm not moaning at the BBC for the sake of moaning, but 'bad science' stories get my proverbial goat.
'This week marks the last opportunity to see the "comet of the century", before it disappears for another 80,000 years.'
No, it doesn't, no, it isn't and no, it won't, and no, it probably won't!
1. The comet will be visible after this week, you might need binoculars but the comet is getting higher each evening and after Thursday the moon will be shrinking in phase and soon won't be up during the peak early evening comet-viewing time. Much darker skies will help compensate for the comet starting to fade.
2. It's not 'the comet of the century' as discussed upthread! 3. It won't 'disappear', it will still be visible next week to the unaided eye away from streetlights, and easy with binoculars and to image even from lighter locations. And with a small telescope, easy to follow for weeks yet. 4. 80,000 years is one possible orbital period. There's a fair chance this comet won't ever be back.
Oh, and the number is 2023 A3, not just A3! (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is named for 'Purple Mountain' observatory in China, apparently and a lovely name too, while ATLAS is a South African comet searching system.)
Other than that, great story and (seriously) is worth reading for some beautiful images from UK observers! (Which are all I've seen of it since Saturday. And yes, today we've cloud so thick you could bang your head on it, again. Good job the comet will be around for a while yet... )

Sadly my presence in a city probably means I’m out of luck but I’ll give a try. I did once spot an ISS pass, so it’s not impossible.
