Warhammer audio books and audio dramas are usually what I listen to when I paint my armies, so I'll be giving these a go. I've always been a 40K guy, never tried an Age of Sigmar story, but with Piper reading one I suppose I will be soon. May I ask what armies you have?
I have been playing for more than 20 years now and so far had Empire (my first Warhammer army), Dogs of War (back in the day), Dark Elves and Ogre kingdoms. Then the 40k bug bit me and my first army was Death Guard followed by Blood Angels (which I painted pink and called them the "Pink Angels"- I actually won Best painted army at a tournament with them once).
I sold pretty much all of them.
Right now I am slooowly building up an Inquisition force with Marine allies. Since I am a big Dan Abnett fan, I am very much into the Inquisition (I even have the Eisenhorn miniature, and Greyfax of course). I think Inquisition is my favorite faction at the moment. You can basically do anything with them and build something really unique.
Yeah, never have gotten into Age of Sigmar either. But I love the steampunk dwarves, so maybe one day...

My main army is Primaris Ultramarines, which I did in a pretty traditional blue and bronze look. I've got an Eldar army in the build and I'm working on various kill teams for Death Guard, Ad. Mech. and Tyranids. I'm looking at expanding Ad. Mech. into a full blown army since I enjoyed doing the kill team so much. It's funny that you mention Dan Abnett and the Inquisition. I just got the Eisenhorn mini, though I haven't started him yet as I'm still plotting the colors out. I've been wanting to flavor my Space Marines with some Inquisition, though, so Greyfax is also on my list. Abnett's Eisenhorn books were the second Warhammer thing I read and they contributed a lot to my immersion in 40K. I still drift toward Inquisition novels and audio dramas when they come out. They tend to show off the interesting underbelly of the Warhammer universe that I like so much.

They tend to show off the interesting underbelly of the Warhammer universe that I like so much. Wow, cool! Yeah, I have been planning of getting into Killteam, too. When I do my big move at the beginning of next year, I will also look out for a new gaming group and I hope I can get something going. I really like the look of the new Rogue Trader minis, so maybe I get the set and make them my first Killteam (although I also have a random squad of Space Wolves in MKIII, because I got the Burning of Prospero Set a couple of years back).
Ad Mech could be really cool, you could do lots of cool conversions (if you are into that type of thing).
I still have not painted half of the miniatures sitting around on my shelves and Greyfax and Eisenhorn still wait for their turn. I was just so stressed out in the past weeks that I had no patience at all to sit still and paint and prefered to go for long walks with my audio plays. Such is life. I hope all calms down once I started my new job.
Dan Abnetts writing is fantastic. His Inquisition novels were also the first 40k novels I read, but I also really like his Gaunts Ghosts. It is just so much more than pure "bolter porn" but unites a great story with well written characters and interesting and emotionally involving background and family stories.
Hardly any other writer at Black Library, save maybe for Aaron Dembski Bowden (Nightlords) and Graham McNeill, comes even close. I really like this dark and gritty dystopian future, with all the grisly details (and the background is by now immensely vast and complex) and it contrasts very nicely with my other fandoms which are more of an optimistic tone.

Someone at Games Workshop must really like Doctor Who, not that that is surprising. Wish Dan Abnett would come and write from BF again.

This is one of the reasons many of his Black Library books came out late.
Not sure what else he is working on at the moment. Is he still doing comics?

I think so, I read so few comics (fewer now that Lost Light ended) I couldn’t say.

Catherine Tate was here in Australia this weekend for her comedy shows, plus she was the main guest for "Lords Of Time 4" . I wonder if someone asked her about these particular audios?

I noticed today that the Tennant and Piper Warhammer CDs are up for pre-order on Amazon. Scheduled for Feb. 19th in the U.S.

can someone recommend a good one to start with? for someone who never played the game or read the books. ive tried to listen to some of the audiobooks on youtubes. I'd recommend something pretty self contained to start with. Like Doctor Who, Warhammer has a pretty deep lore, with a lot of corners of the universe available to explore, so in some respects you just have to dive in. In my experience, the best access points tend to be with the Space Marines and the various parts of the The Imperium of Man.
Some of the audios that I've enjoyed the most:
Red and Black - Deals with some sci-fi concepts like artificial humans and a lost civilization. Good exposure to the tone of the lore.
Mission:Purge - Pretty action packed. Space Marines ambushed and fighting their way through the trap. Good for getting the flavor of what the Space Marines are like.
The Madness Within - More psychological, with horror elements. Deals with the supernatural themed side of the lore.
Fireborn - Touches on the religious elements of the lore and some of the attitudes that it influences. Lots of action in this one, too.
There's plenty of crossover talent from Big Finish in the Warhammer audios, so another option is you could look at cast lists and readers that you like. I liked Toby Longworth and John Banks' work at Big Finish so I picked some Warhammer audios that featured them when I started out.

these aren't full cast audio?

They're usually a bit like the Early Adventures. A narrator fills in some details while the cast performs it.

these aren't full cast audio? Red and Black is a cast of three playing dozens of roles, it’s basically the Beth Chalmers show. xenos is an audio book, read IIRC by either Toby Longworth Gareth Armstrong. but most stories are a cast of about five or six, but with lots of characters doubled up.
