I’ve started to listen to the story, and it’s interesting to say the least. I don’t think I’ve ever heard or read a 40k story with a Living Saint in it. I always assumed they behaved, effectively, like Imperial Daemons and only appeared in battle, summoned by carnage and faith.
Furthermore, there’s an odd absence thus far of “a damned age of lost technology”, rather it feels like it’s occuring in a fairly generic science fiction-y setting.

Mine has arrived, too, but I have not started on it yet (I hope I get around to it next week!). Hmm... your first impression sounds a bit disappointing, I was really hoping for the full 40k experience.
But I guess they needed to make this appeal for a wider audience as well and not only to us old farts who have been following the franchise for the past 20 years, which is also obvious from using Catherine Tate as a hook and the way they have marketed it.
I am curious. I will report back when I had a chance to listen to it.

I’m not disappointed, it’s a cracker of a story, lots of lovely mystery and impending doom (and in fact, DOOM! going by Celestine’s precognition). It is geared to being a gateway drug to 40k though, even if there is rumination as to the nature of the Decree Passive imposed on the Ecllesiarchy. Ohh and an odd line about someone not having the authority to order a bunch of ships to return to dock when someone in the room was an Inquisitor - Who DOES havevthe authority to order ships to return to dock.

It’s also weird listening to is after hearing “Hand of Darkness”, because Emma Gregory was Greyfax in that and is Celestine here.

I’m enjoying it so far, about 90 minutes in. I particularly like the snarky comments Greyfax made during the Eccelaiarch’s various speeches. Even the Custodes join in! one very interesting aside .... The Custodes are not members of the Cult Imperialis or believers in the God Emperor, I wonder if this is going to be important in the ongoing narrative, because Primarch Bob is the same.
Something that ground my teeth though - lots of time jumps without indication of time passing.

Up to half way through part three - FINALLY Greyfax loses her temper. I seem to recall something from the background fluff about the character that she has a hair teigger temper, a Puritan streak and a fondness for shooting first.

SO MANY UNANSWRRED QUESTIONS!! {Spoiler} Does this mean Greyfax is starting to believe in the Emperor’s divinity? Is Longinus a Perpetual? Perhaps even THAT Longinus (the man who speared the side of Jesus (Who it is implied is the Emperor in this universe)j Has the Decree Passive been restored? What does Primarch Bob think of more armies of religious zealots running around?
And ... is it really Celestine who came back?

can someone give a review on the brian blessed audio? tia It certainly is not bad. Brian Blessed is awesome and worth it for him alone. I am however not the biggest fan of the re-launch of the Warhammer Fantasy World and the whole Realmgates/ Age of Sigmar, so I dislike this bit. They try to use this audio as intro for the new setting with having Gotrek arriving in this new world and being confused and put off by it, but I just do not buy it. As this is Warhammer, it of course has lots of fighting and shouting (well, Brian Blessed, do I need to say more?), but the characters are well thought out and above the usual average one-dimensional Warhammer clichees (although, of course, this still is not Shakespeare).
If you like Warhammer and are not averse to the Age of Sigmar thing, you might very well enjoy this. Even if you have no clue about the new setting, this was created as a jumping-on point, so no worries there.
Production quality is also on par with Big Finish.
However, as I am just right now listening to the 40k release "Our Martyred Lady"- that one is certainly a step above "Realmslayer"- for me, the story is much better (big fan of the 40k setting), the writing is tighter, the characters, atmosphere and setting better. But this might be just a matter of taste.

Finally getting around to listening to "Our Martyred Lady". This might very well be the best Audio made by Black Library to date. The writing is great, the setting is very atmospheric and the story full of action and intrigue- we have battles, political intrigue, heroes in shining armour and assassins... Katherine Tate is great as Greyfax, I in general enjoy her in her audio work, so I expected nothing less. Having just listened to the 10th Doctor latest box set, you can see the contrast between the two characters of Greyfax and Donna, who might well be polar opposites. A fantastic production for every 40k fan.

i am currently watching a couple of ebay offerings; sands of blood and beasts of cartha both on cd. if i buy now with shipping they would 22 bucks each. not bad.
my brother and i are big fantasy book fans, and we both like audio. he is more an audiobook guy im more of an audio drama fan but we over lap a lot. and i have buddy
that is the same and i lend him my cds of stuff. so i know if i get i'll get a lot of mileage out of these.
but honestly warhammer kind of intimidating. the only thing warhammer stuff i ever expierenced was a videogame probably back in the 90s or early 2000s. i did get a
kick out bowling over goblins with dwarven cannons. other than that i tried listening to a couple of dan abbnet audiobooks on youtubz. everytime it just put me to
sleep. but that was the space sci fi warhammer. this is fantasy more of my bailiwick. and still the discription of the audios makes my head spin. it just seems
like i missed a thousand episodes and i dont even speak the language. but that huge world and mythos attracts me top. i want in but dont want to feel lost. i guess i
could just listen with a wiki open. im sure warhammer has a few on the interwebz. tuigirl's review of cathrine tate's story really makes me want to hear it. but,
even so im hesitant to try them. it just seems like so much cannon you need to understand whats going on. even the wiki entries are filled so many links in the
entries to other characters, places and events. i dont want to get an audio and just be lost
btw i found our martyed lady cd on ebay for 46 bucks with shipping.

I know what you mean. I actually felt exactly like that when I started out on my Who journey a while back! Talk about intimidating...
Well, I have been into Warhammer for more than 20 years now and build and painted 8 armies during that time...
As for the Catherine Tate audio- it really is a very good jumping on point. All you need to know is that the 40k universe is basically screwed. There is a oppressive totalitarian system that controls all parts of your life and a single life is worth nothing, you are just a drone doing your duty. Everything is decaying, there is no science or learning anymore, and humanity fights a never ending war against basically everybody and against each other. There are a lot of different factions fighting against each other in the Imperium alone.
There is the Ecclesiarchy- to keep the humans in line, the Imperial Faith is forced upon everybody, it is basically worshiping the Emperor on Earth as a god. He is of course no god, just a very powerful psyker who died during a fight with his favorite son during the biggest rebellion (the Horus Heresy) 10000 years ago. He is kept alive as a quasi-cyborg because his psykic signals (the Astronomican/ the Emperors light) guide space ships through Warp-Space. It acts as a beacon for navigation, without it, the whole Imperium would collapse.
You also have the Imperial Guard (now named Astra Militarum), the Tech wizards of the Adeptus Mechanicus (they are the only ones who know how machinery works), the superhuman gene-engineered Space Marines (Adeptus Astartes) and then you have the Inquisition. The Inquisition is basically the secret police who keep everybody in line (which also has, of course, different factions) and they are very very powerful and a force to be reckoned with in the Imperium- they can even order whole planets destroyed (Exterminatus) and have planetary governors executed.
In the audio, we have the Inquistion, the Ecclesiarchy (and their soldiers, the Sisters of Battle, since they are not allowed to have an army of "men") and the Space Marines of the Black Templars (fundamentalist xenophobic zealots) as main factions. Most of the background details are explained quite well.
I can really recommend the audio, I personally think it is the best one Black Library has done to date. If you do not need/ want the physical copy, you pay half the price (20 Euros) for download at iTunes for example (cheaper than ordering directly from Black Library).
You could just get it- and if you have any questions, well, you now know who you could ask.
