interestingly looking back through BARB the current weekly figures are almost equal to the Xmas figures for the last 5 or 6 years, but programmes shown on New Year got about a million more. Regards mark687 I'll still be plastered from Hogmanay with a New Year's Day ep. Hangover Who. Hope it's quiet!

Hm. I'm a bit sad about this - I liked Christmas Who, but if the alternative was no special at all, I'm fine with New Year's.

They will be broadcasting the new Watership Down adaption somewhere In the schedule. Would be ironic if that took Doctor Who’s slot; as Capaldi does a voice on it.

And it appears that all three companions will be back
Unless of course the Beeb are misleading us.

Did I hear rumours of Mark Gatiss Christmas Ghost Story this year? That could be the one thing worth tuning in for. Oh I do hope so - another M.R.James adaptation? It's already too long since 'The Tractate Middoth', I was hoping it marked a revival of the annual BBC Ghost Story for Christmas from the 70s and early 2000s.

They did the odd one after that later in the 2000s, Whistle and I'll Come to You with John Hurt being the one I remember best. Stunning version and quite different from the 1968 one. The two GHost Story boxsets from the BFI are wonderful, indispensible stuff.

I loved 'A View From A Hill' and 'Number 13' (well, I would, wouldn't I ) in 2004/5 but I really didn't like the second 'Whistle' despite John Hurt's usual brilliance. I certainly agree it's different from the (I think excellent) 1968 version! Oh well. They are both some distance from the text so we have a choice of variations on a whistle by M.R.James.

For me, the most surprising thing in the announcement is that Graham, Yaz and Ryan are all still in it. Great TARDIS team!

I wasn't the biggest fan of the Doctor's current look, but that scarf really pulls it together. I hope it lasts past the episode, though I'm pretty sure it's just a seasonal touch.

I thought the same of Matt's green overcoat. It really tied the tweed together but it hardly featured after it's debut.

The Beeb have announced the full slate, which is why the Who pic and synopsis hit the streets today - and there's plenty to get on with this festive season outside of Who. I'm also looking forward to: The Dead Room: Mark Gattis' traditional ghost story starring Simon Callow. Callow, Gatiss, ghosts....remind anyone of anything in particular? No? This'll be one for me and Number13 for sure! Mark Kermode's CHristmas films documentary. His Secrets Of Cinema series, co-written with Kim Newman, has been masterful. Les Miserables. Dominic West as Valjean, David Oyelowo as Javert. That's enough to get me on board, but Olivia Colman as Madame Thernadier is the icing on that cake. Luther is back, hopefully to right the wrongs of Series 4, and he's not alone - the wonderful Ruth WIlson (my pick as the 13th Doctor) returns as Alice! The two recovered Morcambe And Wise eps will be on BBC2 50 years since last seen. THat'll be a treat for all, after we see the same M&W every year, to get new ones. Frankie Boyle seems to be doing his version of Newswipe taking a look at 2018. A documentary about Billy Connolly's life, from the Clyde to superstardom. The ABC Murders - John Malkovich as Poirot in the Beeb's annual Agatha Christie. The Long Song - A drama set in the last days of slavery in Jamaica, with Tamara Lawrence, Hayley Atwell (some other people's choice for the 13th Doctor) and Jack Lowden. Watership Down - A new CGI version with the most stunning voice cast. John Boyega, Olivia Colman, Sir Ben Kingsley, Tom Wilkinson, Gemma Arterton, Peter Capaldi (Who?), Mackenzie Crook, Anne-Marie Duff, Taron Egerton, Freddie Fox, Daniel Kaluuya, Rory Kinnear, Craig Parkinson, Rosamund Pike, Jason Watkins, and Gemma Chan.

May have to re-watch the Planet Of The Dead special beforehand - terrific actor with a well-deserved, successful career nowadays. With Daniel's Oscar nomination for Best Actor this year, and Andrew Garfield's the year before, it's more evidence that Andy Prior - the Who casting director - might just be the true unsung hero of New Who. In fact, Felicity Jones and Carey Mulligan both have been up for Oscars after being in Who as well. It really does seem quite the breeding ground for talent.

Another image from the episode! It certainly does look like this threat will stretch centuries back into Earth’s history...!
