I have to admit, although I am very excited by the prospect of the Anti-War Doctor doing battle with the War Master, that I am disappointed not to see Jon Culshaw’s name in the cast list. I had convinced myself that Doctor Ogron would make an appearance in this set.

Story synopses are now up: www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/the-war-master-rage-of-the-time-lords-1870Also interestingly (to a schedule anorak like me anyway): It seems one of the episodes (assumably McGann's) was recorded in October, whilst the rest were in February. I just find it slightly amusing how much of a break there was between that one episode for the set in terms of recording.

I am looking forward to this. I really hope that this will be the Master's story and that the Doctor is getting his butt kicked.
However, I am confident they get the balance between evil menace and a great story right. And I still really like that cover artwork.

Really looking forward to this. I’ve got a business trip abroad next week and will be listening to this on the plane. Let’s hope I don’t give into temptation between Wednesday and then!

Yeah I'm pretty jazzed for this too. I haven't even got to Survivors 9 yet (some of that is because I don't want it to be over), but I'm going to devour this release as quickly as I can!

The Survivor{Spoiler} Interesting start.
The Master gains another companion it seems. Alice was well introduced, moral but with a lot of anger inside that makes her ripe for the Master to manipulate. Wonder what he plans to do with her...

The Coney Island Chameleon {Spoiler} The bait and switch was clever. This story kinda lacked the insidious nature of the other one, the Master goes a bit unsubtle here.
Overall not amazing by War Master standards, but a decent release nonetheless.

I’ve added a poll, allowing you to rate each individual story and the set overall.

The Missing Link and Darkness and Light {Spoiler} Well the Doctor got royally beaten.
The setup with Alice paid off very well. The Master’s two plans made reasonable sense. The Rage itself remains a bit unknown (no idea what it’s supposed to look like), and I thought its impersonations of other characters were just projections but later on it seems to be properly physical as the Master puts in in the pod. Odd. The Time Lord subplot was a bit odd as neither the Master nor the Doctor really interacted with it.
In any case, the main draw was the interaction between the Doctor and the Master, and that was delivered splendidly.

Oh wow, this is delicious. However, the intense malice might prevent me from re-listening to this when I am in a darker mood, although I have to say that this did not affect me the same way the first War Master set did- I think the writing of the first set is just unparalleled with it's impact (I did not get the second box set for that very reason- I have a hard time with malice in stories and it just affects my mood too much; however, this time I just could not resist the promise of a story where the Master kicks the Doctor's butt- he had it coming for a loooong time).
Still, we have here some really good stories, I like the mix of history and mystery in the first two. The very first scene in "The Survivor" is absolutely perfect. It starts out so innocent, but from the moment we hear the Master do his sinister chuckle, we know it won't stay like that for long. The setting and the atmosphere is wonderfully realized and how the Master moved about his human chess-pieces is quite clever.
{Spoiler} I also love that the humans still have a mind of their own and not everything goes as well as the Master intends- so he has to cheat a little with his technical and psychic tricks to get the result he wants. The "Coney Island chameleon" does not quite reach the same impact however and I am also not absolutely convinced by the setting. But I absolutely loved part three. This is exactly what I was hoping for. {Spoiler} The Doctor is on his back foot from the very start, he is erratic and more or less incapacitated. The Master gleefully has set up a trap for him and really enjoys how everything falls into place... this Master does not play about. Fun and games are over. This is not the Delgado Master from "Mind of Evil" who worries that he accidentally has killed his old friend. No. He cheerfully (you can basically hear him rubbing his hands!) sets up some happy torture for the Doctor, who is getting his butt handed to him royally. I would have been very disappointed if this would have been happy families, after all, this is the Master's show. Awesome.
Now I am curious for part 4 of this series. I hope it continues along the lines of what part 3 did promise and they won't chicken out completely- however, I have the slight suspicion that the Doctor survives. Somehow.

Wow, great conclusion. The interaction of the Master and the Doctor was wonderful. I admit it could have been a bit grittier, and the monster was a bit... standard... but this story was satisfying enough (so yeah, did not quite make the grade "exceeds expectations"). However- {Spoiler} At the end, we are partial again to the running gag of the 8th Doctor and his attraction to mind wipes. Well, of course they had to do it. I am aware of that. However, this will completely free up the stage for the Doctor meeting the War Master again in Ravenous 4- the writers had promised there won't be a mind wipe at the end of Ravenous 4. Looks as if that indeed won't be necessary since the mind wipe here will take care of it....looking forward to some more unrestricted malicious goodness in October then.
I also enjoyed the Behind the Scenes- as usual, everybody seems to have enjoyed themselves immensely. Glad that even people like Derek Jacobi are so easily bribed with good food. I thoroughly can relate to that! And I am happy for McGann to have had the chance to play along his childhood idol and he appears to be as excited as a little kid about it. He is so much more fun to listen to since he has started to embrace the whole thing instead of being embarrassed by it. Good on him.
