I like the companion chronicle trivia that they wrote Georgia Moffat part for someone who could perhaps not act so that they would have an excuse if she turned out to be lousy

I've heard very few of the 5th Doctor and Peri stories, with this being one I listened to a few years ago now. They are a fun pairing, but I prefer her with the 6th Doctor.
I can't remember much about it, I think it was okay?
Do you reckon it's worth a relisten?

Definitely its quite an entertaining tale and i do love four part stories am one of the folks who prefers Peri(when is she coming back🤪) with the 5th doctor. This is quite different in that she is separate from the 5th which gives her a slightly stronger role. It wont go down in Doctor Who history but its an entertaining enough tale

Do you reckon it's worth a relisten? Yes!
Red Dawn has that early Main Range charm about it; basic by today's standards yet still fun to listen to. We've had loads of better stories since but there's not a lot wrong with Red Dawn.

Ditto!
It feels like a Carl Sagan novel. Some wonderful performances and the music is just haunting. Wherever did Russell Stone go, I wonder?

I very much agree

Never quite felt this one which is a shame because it was the Fifth Doctor's first Ice Warriors story for BF audio, i think the story lacks suspense & intrigue but it's a average listen just not quite the epic i was expecting.

Could never get into this one for some reason. It wasn't awful and, compared to Land of the Dead, was hardly the worst of the early releases in the MR. I think it didn't help that this was hyped as the 'Return of the Ice Warriors' and it didn't quite live up to that. It also got overshadowed a bit with the early Dalek Empire ones (the Genocide Machine was released before this and the Apocalypse Element soon after). I will try it again some time, but just found it a bit bland.

Russell is alive and well with his family in Coventry. I actually got a Christmas card from him yesterday. He's been a (rather brilliant) full time dad in recent years.

His music remains some of my strongest memories for early BF. Gloriously atmospheric, it feels impossible to separate the stories from the soundtrack.

Working my way through the as-yet-unheard early MR and I'm finding one gem after another.
This is a great combination of a 'first contact' story and a spaceflight story set just close enough to our time to be credible in terms of its hardware. As a middle-aged Space geek who grew up with Apollo, I loved all the details of 'g', retro-rockets and fuel use, escape velocity etc. that Justin Richards mixed in with the adventure and some epic-sounding launches and landings (some smoother than others!)
And it's an excellent 'first contact' story where the Martian tomb is also a '2001'-style Sentinel but of a far more subtle kind. Aware that Life was beginning on Earth when they entered their long hibernation, the last of their kind on a dying world, the tomb was designed to respond to visitors - most possibly from Earth but I suppose they could have been interstellar (we never did find out what the Ambassadors (of Death!) were doing at Mars, did we?) And not just visitors, but the right sort of visitors - the doors will only open for sentient creatures with Martian standards of honour and nobility, a very clever idea and of course the Doctor - especially the Fifth - passes the test easily once he works it out. A pity that not all the humans were as honourable - but then not all Time Lords are either!
I first met the Ice Warriors as the diplomats of 'The Curse of Peladon' and was delighted to find that's how they are here - warriors by tradition and ability, but honourable and reasonable people. One of my favourite moments was when the Doctor says 'Ice Warriors' and Lord Zzarl replies (more or less) never mind the labels, I'm Zzarl, this is Sstast - what are your names? I've always liked this about Brian Hayles' TV stories - whether they are 'goodies' or 'baddies', his most famous creations are never mere monsters, but alien people with their own culture, politics and motivations. Since the Martians we meet here show the state of their civilisation at the time Mars was abandoned and long after 'The Empress of Mars', it now seems that Varga in their introductory story and the evil Sslar in 'Seeds of Death' were probably piratical renegades like Azaxyr in the second Peladon tale. Izlyr and Ssorg in 'Curse' represented what was always the true current culture of their people and the others were unfortunate encounters - after all, the Doctor does run into trouble a lot!
I loved the running theme between Zzarl and Sstast - Martian honour must be upheld, but how? And gradually, Zzarl teaches his Sub-Commander that honour can be gained and maintained through diplomacy, tolerance, self-sacrifice and helping others just as much as by victory or death in battle - though of course, if pushed they will do that too. And Sstast (not physically of the 'Ice Lord' caste by the sound of him) raises himself to that rank by his intelligence and willingness to learn.
That's quite a cast as the humans and Martians isn't it? Peter Davison and Nicola Bryant were excellent and I was very impressed by Matthew Brenher's Zzarl, catching the tones of the characteristic voice so memorably given by Alan Bennion to all the TV Ice Lords. And I thought Russell Stone's music was outstanding.

So I reach another BF Who debut and also as it turned out a massively significant debut to the world of Who in general Interestingly its a more nuanced performance than you'd initially expect from Ice Warriors (arguably Matthew Brenher is more coherent sounding then Nick Briggs's later efforts.) In its early days BF had 2 go to Actors for nonferrous Humans. For all rounders with depth they went to Barnaby Edwards for straightforward G*ts they went to Stephen Fewell who's acting at peak g*ittish here. As most people know I'm a fan of Battlefield so I was a bit surprised to hear Robert Jezek's natural voice for the 1st time. As others have said Upthread this has a great Sound FX/Music Mix particularly the Vehicle /Lander and the initial Tomb scenes. One intriguing thread that hasn't been explored in another story I don't think is the conception of The Brookings Report its prime material for a Pseudo Historical surely? 4.5/5 Regards mark687

I think this might have been the third BF story I listened to (after 'Time Of The Daleks' and 'The Genocide Machine', though I get the feeling I might have also listened to some of 'Shada' at around that point too). Whilst I will say that it does feel a little 'light' as Main Range stories go, I do absolutely adore this story & would absolutely have no issue listening to it at least once a year (the slightly shorter runtime does certainly help!)

Just finishing my relisten to Red Dawn and I rather liked it. I do tend to prefer the early MR stories.
I think it's because the production isn't quite as slick as the later ones, which do tend to sound a bit samey as they are so polished. There is a charm to the older soundscapes, a bit like listening to a good valve amp rather than flawless digital sound.
Anyway, I've never really warmed (bad pun) to the Ice Warriors, far too much zzzz's and ssss's in my book, but this time I didnt mind at all. Good plots too regarding DNA and corporate greed.
Great retro synth soundtrack, and an above average and enjoyable 6 out of 10.

Yeah, I think the older Main Range stories do have a certain charm about them. I like the Ice Warriors as villains, the pseudo-Klingon Ice Warriors that went on about honour all the time didn't do much for me. I think Nick does the Ice Warrior voice well though.
