This is out now, by the way! You can get it from Audible here. And we're getting some lovely reviews, with top marks for all four stories from Sci-fi Bulletin - 40/40!

The original was chilling enough; what’s done with it here ratchets that up considerably. 10/10
... it's impossible to resist!

Right then, story one: Casting the Runes.
Spoilers ...
I think the character of Jo Harrington (Anna Maxwell Martin) could have been slightly less self-centred if I'm honest. The character - a male in the original - was always curmudgeonly and not always easy to like, so continuity is adhered to here, but I would have liked her to be more appealing. However, that's my only issue with this adaption. It is excellent - the cast are terrific. Tom Burke underplays Dunning rather nicely to offset the growing horror of the piece, and Reece Shearsmith is, as always, wonderful. This is a classic story, and given some interesting and very satisfying tweaks from Bafflegab. Really good sound design too. Enjoyed this a lot. With Big Finish's sole stab at MR James beginning and seemingly ending with Textbook Stuff's Casting the Runes and Other Uncanny Tales back in 2010, it's good to see Bafflegab picking up the classic horror gauntlet (would they, could they, consider doing some HP Lovecraft adaptations in the future, I wonder?). Excellent stuff.

I like M.R.James stories so The Conception of Terror is an exciting release that I will be getting when my next Audible credit arrives.

Very interesting things have been done with A. K. Benedict's adaption of Lost Hearts.
I remember the BBC's tremendous Christmas Ghost Stories's televised version of this (and now have them on DVD), and thinking that Lost Hearts was perhaps my favourite. One reason for that was the period setting, and another was the very grim undertones regarding the abduction of minors - also, the use of hurdy-gurdy music was incredibly creepy. Clearly, the period setting has made way for a more modern, more urban setting. The grimness however remains in spades - Susan Jameson and Jeff Rawle (what a superb voice actor he is) are an exceptional Bunch and Abney. The whole cast is great, in fact. It is rare (for me) that such changes can be made to an established favourite and remain so true to the spirit (!) of the original, and prove to be such a massively enjoyable listen in its own right. Absolutely wonderful - if anyone is thinking about getting this set, you really won't regret the purchase.
I notice the next one has Pearl Mackie in it!

What a brilliant set of adaptions this is! The Treasure of Abbot-Thomas adapted by Jonathan Barnes is the slowest-burner of the lot - MR James was a master of restrained build-up, after all. Pearl Mackie (as Mika) and Robert Bathurst (as Greg) keep things interesting until things get really creepy - which they definitely do, but we have to wait for it.
I've found Mark Morris's Doctor Who stories for Big Finish a bit of a mixed bag if I'm honest, but there's no doubt about it: his horror credentials are truly masterful. His version of A View from a Hill is beautifully told. The two leads Paul and Sarah Fanshawe, a couple suffering the greatest of tragedies, as really well played by Andy Nyman and Alice Lowe. Two people trying to heal, but mainly succeeding in irritating each other. And in doing so, they make matters so very much worse.
This set, like Blood on Satan's Claw before it, is genuinely scary. The horror leaps through the headphones at you. I really cannot recommend it strongly enough.

Bafflegab continue their amazing MR James adaptions with a new audio The Ash Tree.
Now, let me get my tiny mind around this: a story previously televised by the BBC as part of their Ghost Stories at Christmas strand, which starred Lalla Ward and Barbara Ewing among others, is now being given the audio treatment by Matthew Holness who recently penned the awesome UK horror film Possum and features Reece Shearsmith and John Sessions. This could roughly be described as an essential purchase could it not? Roll on December 6th!!
