I understand that if it was a Parody it would be protected under US law but it's like 5% away from being ST:TNG in terms of sets, costumes, props, FX, music; even the way the episodes are directed looks like something from the late 1980s. And of course, strip out the McFarlane (alledged) humour and the plots are pretty interchangeable with TNG as well.

Well it's better than Discovery which is made by people that don't like Star Trek.

Because a. No one cares enough to pursue legal action b. They have investigated legal actions but have decided their not worth the money, time and effort. c. No intellectual properties of Star Trek are being used, and you can’t legally trademark plots, character traits etc. d. People involved with Star Trek enjoy and work on The Orville and have no plans to end that relationship, hence people like Jonathan Frakes being heavily involved.

I first was a bit apprehensive of the Orville, since in my youth I adored the Next Generation like no other TV series. It still is one of my all time favorite TV shows ever. I feared that there would be too many juvenile jokes (knowing Mac Farlane)... but I was pleasently surprised. It is actually really, really good and well written and the jokes are not obnoxious. I think what keeps them save is that they operate as "persiflage" of the Next Generation- although they have created something new, with some original humour and great characters that can stand of their own and can step out of the shadow of the Enterprise D crew.
I am actually surprised how much I enjoyed this and I hope they continue with it for some time. I certainly will tune in for Season 2.

Also, the Klingons always were my favorite race... so why did they have to become... THAT?
I am sure one day I will watch it, but I think I need some more time to steel myself and come to terms with it...

I have no problems with Disco as long as it’s a post-Enterprise series and not a pre-TOS series. The design ethos is clearly 21st century idea of the future, and there’s a little less Roddenberryesque optimism. But it’s not a bad series. Jason Isaacs is gold. Doug Jones is amazing.
If there’s a flaw, it’s that the “emotional journey’ of the series is a broken, emotionally shut it, person finding her feet again and that’s played incredibly well BUT she’s opposite Jason Isaacs in full scenery chewing mode, and she comes off looking really poor.

Need to get round to watching the orville in propper, i do really like Seths work so i should enjoy it. As a tangent, I find it hilarious that the main three sci-fi franchises; Star wars, Star trek and Doctor who all have fan bases with a large proportion who hates the current content (and i love them all naturally but hey ho what can you do)

That being said, the show itself looks great. Isaacs and Yeoh are treasures and make the show worth watching alone. It embraces it's heritage and moves forward with it.
I for one, am eagerly awaiting season 2 and the Picard spinoff.

My problem with the show is that it's so much of a love letter to Trek, especially TNG, that it forgets to be it's own thing. A few juvenile gags along the way doesn't give it enough of it's own feel. I quite like what's there...but I've got so every Trek on my shelf, I could see the actual show anytime rather than the tribute act. Adding Brannon Braga as exec producer, who by his own admission completely ran out of idea for Trek during Enterprise, is baffling to me. Still...it's giving good work to some Trek alumni I adore and I think it's the best thing Seth McFarlane has done since very early Family Guy.
As for Discovery, we have a thread for it where I've given my thoughts week by week - I can't reconcile much of it with Trek canon but I don't care too much, it's doing something new at least and I love characters like Lorca, Georgious, Stammets or Tilly who would never have been Rick Berman-era cast regulars. I do worry the show panicked a bit and is now going to be too fan service-y by throwing Spock in but hey...we're getting a show where it seems Christopher Pike is gonna be the Captain for more than a failed pilot or 5 mins in a movie. I've always liked Pike so look forward to seeing what is done with him.
While I like Sonequa as an actress, I think if Michael Burnham is not written terribly well. We didn't need things like the Sarek connection. I'd like to see a bit of course correct with her.

I guess the same reason they had to become the ones from the films and TNG which look nothing like the original Klingons? It's funny people are so against a redesign because they love a previous re-design.
I actually agree though - there was nothing about the new design that added to anything. Change for the sake of it. A bit like the Abrams-verse blue eyed ones from Into Darkness.

One of my problems with Discovery is that given the current climate, with Trump, Brexit etc what we definitely don't need is a dark take on a show that is known for portraying a more optimistic utopian view of the future.

Yeah, I hear that a lot. I think I just have not evolved with it and have become a sad old fart. I do not even have a TV anymore and have not watched TV proper for a long time...
I saw Issacs on a convention in 2017 and he is a great professional actor, I am sure he does a REALLY good job, my friends in my fan club were swooning over him.
As I said, one day, I get around to it...

It is not so much that I am against it, it just does not click with me at all.
As I said before, maybe I am just getting old...

I found that even the way The Orville is shot reminded me a little of Star Trek: Continues. In fact, a lot of it reminds me of STC...
I found Discovery really difficult to get into, to be honest, it's actively fought against me trying to engage with it. Like someone grabbing you by the ears and forcing their face up to yours so they can yell about how rotten everything is. It's a bit too meanspirited for me. Not really what I come to Trek for.
I was very leery of The Orville, but the characters have been surprisingly welcoming. Dr Quinn is rapidly becoming a favourite with her two boys and Isaac acting as their pseudo-nanny. The gags are well-integrated and, for some episodes, removed entirely to explore some very Trekkian themes. Manifest destiny, populism, transgender politics, even love not working out the way that it's often promised in media. It's also got a lovely bit of thought put into it, like explaining away the Union's lack of a traditional capitalist economy: they barter based on a person's reputation instead. I'm not sure if they ever covered that in actual Trek, but it's a great explanation. It's got some proper stakes too, which is arguably all the more impressive given how silly some aspects of it can get sometimes.
Having something like it is nice (and I think important) for the current decade. It's proof that we can still dream that utopian dream. A series out-of-time, but not out-of-place, done with a lot of love for what it's based on. I really enjoy it.

My thoughts exactly. As they've said many times the series is about the journey to that better world and everything shown from Season 2 so far has indicated a lighter and more positive show.
