Has there ever been any homages to the movie, Labyrinth in Who? I am including a scene in my short trip pitch, that echoes the masked ball scene from that movie as part of the surreal fairy tale theme.

Wow! Didn't think I'd be close to finishing the synopsis for my entry. Quite surprised by how brilliant it's turned out! On another note, I've already made a start on the extract...

In the new DWM, they mention this year's Spragg comp has Rob Shearman as a judge!
I suppose that means Alfie Shaw isn't solely responsible for reading through 1000 entries. Seems like a fabulous idea - and how lovely to know Rob might be reading your entry!

Does that mean stories might receive feedback from Shearman himself as part of the assessment process?

So Rob basically filling Nick's role of picking among a shortlist at some stage or other?

We are now a month away from deadlines. I've got no ideas. Gah. Is there something about a favourite Doctor's personality you think would be cool to explore? Or a setting that you think would provoke an interesting reaction in the characters (i.e. Eighth Doctor meets Grand Budapest Hotel)?

I'll echo what Wolfie has said. What really helps for me is to write down two lists. One is things I enjoy regardless of Doctor Who, and the other listing my favourite aspects of the characters of The Doctor(s) and their companions. Those always help and have given some great ideas.

Ditto to masterdoctor's idea of lists. It can be character traits, favourite stories/characters from within or outside the series, things you think Doctor Who in particular excels at exploring, etc. Look on it a bit like a crossword, little ideas forming bigger concepts. It needn't necessarily be organised either, just so long as you have something down on the page. Alan Moore, for instance, wrote a list of influences he wanted to bring to V for Vendetta that looked something like this:

We are now a month away from deadlines. I've got no ideas. Gah. Hello again. Neither have I. My bipolar means I have times when my ability to think and write creatively is severely limited. The advice from Wolfie and Masterdoctor is helpful. I always find a good walk helps and speaking of Rob Shearman, I remember in the extras for Bride of Peladon his wife, Jane Goddard, said that he often walked to help with his writing. Anyway, if I don't make it this year all best wishes to everyone who gives it a go. Now then, where are my hiking boots...

www.markwho42.net/2019/05/30/episode-233-still-life/I was on this podcast to talk about the Spragg opportunity (why you should submit, some tips) and to plug my 3/Jo subscriber bonus Still Life coming in a few weeks (mild spoilers about the premise in the second half). And here's some extra advice. You see people say, "write something small, preferably simple, not something overstuffed - a Short Trip is a short space." But don't forget, the best STs are often big ideas... but told economically, from a strong, character-centric POV. Like Joseph Lidster's A Full Life, or Selim Ulug's Landbound. You can tell a big, emotional story with real narrative complexity in a surprisingly short space, so long as it's grounded in character. Most of all, your starting point should be one simple question. What really matters to you? (Even and especially if it's something nobody else would think to write about.) Is it how parenthood challenges you to be a better person? Struggling with losing and regaining your sense of purpose? It can be personal or political - but if you had the chance to write Doctor Who, just once in your whole life, what's the one thing you'd want to say? What's a story that only you could tell? It should be whatever interests you or infuriates you—because THOSE stories will lead to characters with real, clear motivations. Characters who will want something and fight for it. To me, that's what turns a decent pitch into a great Short Trip.
