DOCTOR WHO - MAIN RANGE » 90. YEAR OF THE PIGReleased December 2006SynopsisOstend, 1913. War is coming. A war in which millions will die. And the guest in suite 139 of the Hotel Palace Thermae knows it. Which is odd, considering he has trotters, a snout and a lovely curly tail. Toby the Sapient Pig is a swine on the run. Two peculiar strangers have been hunting him across Europe. The first, Miss Alice Bultitude, is an Englishwoman and collector of obscure theatrical ephemera. The second, Inspector Alphonse Chardalot, is a celebrated member of the detective police - the man who brought the trunk murderess of St Germain to justice. This was supposed to be a reading week for the Doctor and Peri. Now they must do battle with a villain who wants to wipe every last human from the face of the earth - once he's had just another dish of truffles. And maybe a valedictory glass of fizzy lemonade. Written By: Matthew Sweet Directed By: Gary Russell CASTColin Baker (The Doctor), Nicola Bryant (Peri), Adjoa Andoh (Nurse Albertine), Paul Brooke (Toby the Sapient Pig), Michael Keating (Inspector Chardalot), Maureen O'Brien (Miss Alice Bultitude)

It's that time of the Chinese zodiac, so time for a relisten to this remarkable story. Despite one of the characters being a sentient pig and some absurd things happening like a time bomb displacing blown up cows temporally and spatially, the story never goes into the completely absurd. The cast are simply amazing. Paul Brooke brings incredible pathos to Toby, an affable sentient pig with a bottomless appetite (Matthew Sweet must have swallowed several menus and regurgitated them for this script) and who is remarkably calm about his background when he finds out. Maureen O'Brien is fun as a fangirl of Toby, just as Adjoa Andoh is almost maternal towards Toby while being completely blase about working for a pig with large meal orders. Michael Keating hams it up, but does it more cleverly than just chewing the scenery like it's going out of business. What's even better is that while some characters have ulterior motives there's no true antagonist and everyone realises and gracefully accepts the truth.

I really wish this had BTS extras. I'd love to hear if my theory about Matthew Sweet getting inspiration from the Pig Faced Ladies rumors of Victoriana for this is correct.

I started listening to this last night so am half way through now. It is a fun tale that keeps you guessing with whats going on with some of the characters and the small cast somehow keeps it going. But it does feel a bit too long so far

This was a pretty good one. Weird, but good. Somewhere around 4/5, but not quite enough to push it to 5/5 for me.
