I hope nobody minds me popping this here... it is for a very good cause, to help Doctor Who author, kids novelist, Beano writer and really good guy Tommy Donbavand.
Novelisations of the Dalek movies, Dr Who and the Daleks and Daleks Invasion Earth 2150AD... along with novelisations of two "what-ifs" for Cushing's Dr Who... what if the next two films had been Dr Who and the Ice Men from Mars and The Tenth Planet Invades the Moonbase...?
From the Obverse Books site...
Description
Our friend Tommy Donbavand – kids author, family man, Doctor Who fan and all round top bloke – is desperately ill and in grave need of our support.
Due to the enormous generosity of a well known Doctor Who author (who wishes to remain anonymous) Obverse are able to offer, for a very limited time, four novels based on the two iconic Aaru Dalek movies from the 1960s, starring Peter Cushing as Dr Who, plus two new adventures loosely based on other scripts from the television series.
These books will be printed in a one off print run, based on the per-orders we receive, and will then go out of print. This is purely a fund raiser for our friend, whose need for support is urgent, so if you want a copy please do order as soon as possible! All profits will of course go straight to Tommy.

I missed out on something very like this a couple years ago due to what I'll describe as "fiscal melancholy", so it's an instant preorder from me. I'm super excited to see what they'll be like.

Oh, man, "fiscal melanchology" is a wonderful phrase. Can I nick that? I'm doing a Sherlock Holmes novel later in the year and that phrase is screaming out to go on there. Can I borrow that phrase, please?

It was late, I was tired and I wasn't wearing my specs.
I now return this thread to the important thing, which is making some cash for a really good guy and his family.

No worries! Happy to contribute to a worthy cause. Oh, 100%. Go for it. Did you ever put my Working Obsurdities into anything? or whatever it was i said when talking about Marc Platt? Same, not quite yet. I was actually puzzling out an alien species by that name. Trying to figure out what they looked like and acted. My brain keeps wanting to do something similar to the Masters from The Tripods, but with a difference.

A little nudge-ette to remind people that Sunday 17th March is the last day you can order these bad boys. Details above.

My copies of these arrived this morning (thanks, Stu!). The question now is... where do they fit on the shelf? After Scream of the Shalka? But does that go before The Dalek Factor? Hmmm.... thinks... needs much thinkings...

Hmmm.... thinks... needs much thinkings... Some people think Human Nature implied Dr Who was the first incarnation of the Other, and Peter Cushing thought he could be a future incarnation of the Doctor, trapped by the Toymaker. So they go before the First Doctor and after the Thirteenth. You might need a Mobius bookshelf.

Very non-Euclidean. Be sure to stack it by your lonesome, though. It's all fun and games until someone violates the laws of causality.

I don't see anywhere else to place this news. It's news that none of us wanted to hear even though we knew it was inevitable. Tommy Donbavand passed away earlier this week. He was a genuinely lovely bloke who will be missed beyond words by his family, his close friends and those of us who knew him online and through work, but who enjoyed every chat, joke and laugh with him.
The announcement was made on his blog, and it is a beautiful tribute to a really good guy.

A second set of four Peter Cushing Dr Who novelisations are now available from Obverse Books. This time Dr Who is supporting the NHS by raising money for NHS charities. The first four books are also available again as ebooks and if you want printed versions, drop Stu a line at Obverse and tell him - if there's enough interest he'll do a short run reprint.
Nicked from Facebook:
After the success of 'Dr. Who and the Ice Men from Mars', Milton Subotsky and Michael Carreras didn't wait to see how 'The Tenth Planet Invades the Moonbase' fared to set their next production in motion. over the next few years, they released no less than three new Dr Who movies, starring the debonair actor Peter Cushing, as well a successful radio series.
Obverse Books are delighted to present David Agnew's novelisations of those three movies, plus a first ever Dr Who anthology, based on the first series of the radio show!
ALL PROFITS TO NHS CHARITIES!

Exciting news! I was hoping these would turn up again. The first four novelisations sit rather snugly next to my copy of Harry Sullivan's War and Doctor Who and the Daleks. They've that same cosy feeling you get when you crack open a classic Target novelisation. Separated only by yellowing pages and the scent of old bookstores. With time, I'm sure even that difference will fade. Ah, nostalgia, you can't beat it. To anyone interested in Peter Cushing's Dr Who, these are gloriously true to the spirit of those films, while also having the courage to evolve beyond the letter. Smithee's novelisation of David Whitaker and Brian Hayles's Ice Men of Mars brings us a remarkably humanist slant on the remarkably cold-blooded Ice Warriors. Conversely, his novelisation of Kit Pedler, Gerry Davis and Whitaker's The Tenth Planet Invades the Moonbase transfers the sheer panic of a Cyber-invasion onto the big screen. Without going into spoilers, the assault on Snowcap feels like a moment from Zulu or a Connery era Bond film. The "production notes" prefacing these releases are a delight as well. Really considered with a genuine weight of history slowly building behind them. The cast too pop from the page in recognisable faces like Wanda Ventham (Colonel Lake of UFO) or Timothy Dalton (Prince Barin of Flash Gordon, to go with a less obvious entry ). If you have the funds spare, I seriously recommend a purchase of these stories. They've a familiar Doctor, new companions and an enriching spin on a classic idea.
