Well that was a terrific, grim, relevant, frightening slab of bleakness to start this final set. Excellent stuff - interesting that writer Alexandria Riley, who plays Ng, doesn't feature Ng in her story. And Captain Jack too, plays only a brief but vital role (his 'doesn't she look tired' moment, perhaps). This might even have been called 'red tape', for all the hoops the character of Bethan has to jump through to get some answers (we can all relate to that, although Bethan's plight may be more tragic than most). It could also have been called 'aftermath' as it deals with what happens after a disaster. But 'A Mother's Son' fits is fine, for that is what is at the heart of this, brilliant story. It's good to hear the enthusiasm of John Barrowman in the extras, and he is absolutely right of course, it's all about the stories, and for this range, they are consistently excellent.
If you're going on a genuinely spooky ghost story journey, then you'd be hard pressed to find better company than Gwen and Colechester. I say Gwen as opposed to Ng, because Alexandria Riley is playing Gwen in this story, and that's good enough for me. Finding a way of continuing the spiky, sarcastic, brave monster-fighter without the regular participation of Eve Myles is a work of genius - confounding, but genius just the same! And Colchester is so great, so laconic and world-weary, but with so much depth - we are lucky to have Paul Clayton on board. Two characters who, in the fiction of the story, shouldn't really exist, are ideal for this eerie, if not entirely unfamiliar, chiller. A spectral being that becomes stronger the more people believe in it has been done before in one form or another, but is beautifully written and realised here (and isn't Jacqueline King brilliant as you-know-who?). Two stories in this set so far, and both of them belters. What a series this is turning out to be.
I'm lumping these two final installments together not because they aren't strong stories in their own right, but because after listening to Day Zero, there was no way I could wait any longer to hear how everything turned out. Also, there's no denying both stories fuel each other in bringing to a close this cataclysmic turn of events - water crisis, The Committee, and Jacqueline King's titular character.
There's actually an element of the cast rising even further to the occasion than usual and bringing in some truly powerful performances. In fact, as events become deadlier, the intensity is almost too much - Colin's worrying about Mr Colchester (what a brilliant couple these two are), NG being more like Gwen than ever (I hope Alexandria Riley is as happy playing this character as I am hearing her. On paper, playing the part of a character played by someone else, with all shared characteristics, might seem a little thankless. And yet everything that's great about Gwen is here, and Riley is excellent), Orr and Yvonne constantly on the verge of self-sacrifice, Andy and The Captain's revelations; there's no let up. I was exhausted as the credits rolled! But what an incredible series this has been, and what a great cast of characters we have with this current line-up - I'm just glad they all seemed to survive after all! Wonderful.
It seems likely there will be further 'Among Us' series from the extras, although they didn't explicitly confirm this (did they?). That the cast and crew seem to be having such a ball with these audios is great to hear: this is one of the most consistently excellent ranges under the BF banner, and I'd hate for it to slow down. Judging by recent announcements, that seems very unlikely.
If you haven't got this yet, and are maybe considering buying - my advice is to do just that!
If I have one criticism of this series (GAU, not Torchwood in general) it's the standalone episodes. Not that they're bad by any means, they just feel weirdly out of place -- there's a separate, ongoing range of one-off stories already, why would the S5 and S6 ranges not just be completely serialized and have standalones plug into it later?
This has a bit of a knock-on effect in that sometimes it feels like the main thread of the season gets lost for a while and by the time we get back to it, I'm clawing at the back of my brain to remember how things were left last time we were hearing it. So on some level, although small, I felt a bit like the final boxset didn't quite stick the landing as well as it might have.
I feel like I'm being really critical and negative here. That's not my intent.
I waited till all the sets were out to listen to GAU (because the wait just kills me), so I've spent the last several days listening my way through. And despite any criticisms offered above, I absolutely loved God Among Us. The writing (even when I thought it was going off on tangents!) was terrific, the directing was terrific, and acting was spot-on, the sound design was wonderful, etc etc etc.
I am so very glad that Big Finish does this series, and so very grateful for all the hard work that Scott and James and Tim and everyone else put into it it. Bring on Series 7....I will be there (eventually)

In the middle of the second episode (Snap Jane) at the moment. Have not read above comments. Just wanted to mention that I was very glad that Orr was reconstituted or whatever. I hope they explain what happened in this or remaining episodes. I was quite surprised and disappointed that in Volume 2 there was scarcely any mention of Orr at all.
Looking forward to listening to the rest over the next few days driving to work and back, etc.
By the way, during the first episode "A Mother’s Son" I couldn't help thinking of The Kinks "Some Mother's Son."
